Sandy,

My son is going to be 2 on Jan. 31. I'm going to call his Cardiologist - I'll

let you know what he said. Do you know what the Thymus is for?? What do we

need it for? Why do they cut it out if we need it??

She said some stuff about having thymic immiturity. She said this could be

because he had heart surgery. Some doctors cut out and discard the thymin.

Not sure how significant it is but she said if they discarded it they would have

done a biopsy first which could tell her more about the cause.

Hi Kim,

How old is your son?? I have been told by my son's Cardiologist that the

Thymus is routinely discarded--but basically only needed until the age of 2 yrs.

I personally think that the Thymus should not removed for open heart. I

paid attention to every single word that the surgeon told me about my son's

surgery, but did not hear about the Thymus. Anyway, it kind of surprised me to

learn about this common practice.

transplant--probable Velo Cardio Facial Syndrome (with normal chromosomes).

Kim,

What is know is that the Thymus helps in immune function--but mostly for

the first few years of life. So that is their reasoning for throwing them away

in our cardiac kids!
