A 504 plan is a formal document you write up with your childs school

staff to ensure his/her safety when they have an illness or another

problem that inhibites them from learning or being in schoool the way

any other " normal " kid does. I have a 504 in place for my son, who is

5, his is b/c he has asthma, PID, tracheobronchomalacia(problematic

airway), and has had a surgery on his stomach where if he were given

an emetic for swallowing a poisonous substance, he could rupture his

stomach. His states that is his not allowed to sit near other children

who are actively sick, not be punished for missing school days, have a

home tutor to help him stay caught up, always have access to his

inhaler, and that if there were any medical emergency, that the letter

accompanying the 504 from his pulmonologist be pulled and sent with

the ambulance.

My daughter is 8 and we just did hers in january. Hers is for asthma,

food allergies, PID.......hers was mainly done b/c she has missed so

much school, hers states she cannot be held back due to missed days,

that she be allowed adequate study time before tests, stays inside for

recess when under so many degrees outside, always has access to her

inhaler, and since she has some reading problems, we tossed that in

too!!LOL

A 504 or an IEP is designed to protect your child and ensure they

recieve proper education.valarie
