Guest guest
sounds cool im glad u found soemthing that helps .does this trampoline have a wieght and /or age restictions on it? it does sound like fun let me knwo when it is my turn lol Awesome Sensory item (toy) I just wanted to share with everyone about this trampoline thing we got for our son for Christmas. IT IS AWESOME!! I was looking for something that would help my son Jack with some of his sensory issues. He will run in circles around the house it seems like non-stop and BLAM into things on purpose(including his baby sister). I found this trampoline called a Jump Smart Trampoline and it had great reviews from other parents with autistic children so I decided to get it. (great price too under $70 and free shipping) It is shaped like a triangle, has padding and a handlebar plus has sounds, games etc. Well, he has been on this thing constantly since Christmas morning. After he bounces for awhile, he will actualy sit still and concentrate for a period of time!! Then when he gets figgity again, he will start jumping and calm down again. He hasn't BLAMMED anyone yet..woohoo! The only downside is all the kids want it ..lol! So we are working on the taking turns part. I just thought I would share this info because so far it has really been GREAT. Hope everyone has a Happy New Year!Trisha(mom to Cade(7), My Wild Child Jack(4), and Hannah(2)__________________________________________________
Guest guest
Stacie I bought it online at kbtoys (www.kbtoys.com). You can search for it on the main page... it is called Jump Smart Trampoline made by Kid-Riffic Toys LTD. I am sure you might be able to find other places too. I usually compare prices/shipping before I buy but as soon as I read some reviews and saw the picture I was sold. It has been almost a week and no BLAMS yet.. woohoo! I have a few other items that help him in different areas that we have done on a trial and errror basis that seem to help too... If you or anyone else wants to know some of these items just ask. I cant affford some items that are specified for AS so I have found alternatives that work just as great and accomplish the same goal. As he too loves to run in circles and into things on purpose and I think that would be a great Sensory thing for him. Guest guest
Trisha, Thanks so much for telling me about the trampoline and where you got it from. I am going to show my husband later today. Any items you have found for sensory please do share them with me as there may be things I have never even thought of. I have tried to make my own weighted blanket. But the rice leaked out and made it messy. LOL But other then that all I have hear is a mini trampoline which is getting old and a big exercise ball that we do some exercises on with Dakota. Love hearing about new things for sensory Stacie
Guest guest
My son has significant problems with his handwriting and convergence insufficiency with his eyes. The occupational therapist had him jump on a trampoline, among other things, because she said it was proven to help in the " rewiring " process of the brain. My son LOVED that part of OT. Guest guest
Thank you for reminding me about the trampoline. I need to get one for my 9 yo son but I need to get one that will hold his weight and has a handle to hold onto because of his balance problems. He weighs 160 lbs. and is already 5' 4 " tall. I looked online and several sports stores carry them with the handle such as The Sport's Authority and Dick's Sporting Goods for $60. Walmart carries a trampoline without the handle for around $40 . I agree that Abilitations is expensive but it was the only place I could purchase the platform swing that rotates 360 degress for my son. It cost me $75 for the swing and $75 for the 360 clip. I tried to find the clip at Lowes and Home Depot but couldn't find one.I was more secure getting it from abilitations because it had a weight bearing load of 250 lbs.Hope this info helps. Take care. Guest guest
There are other sources for similar items to what is in the catalogs. I have seen the jogging trampolines at Target and Walmart for $20. At the local museum gift shop, I found the latex spikey skull cap and gloves that are sold in the catalogs. Especially check out science museums, they usually have sensory things for kids and you don’t have to pay to go into the gift shop. Our Dollar Tree has a lot of sensory things if you get creative. Bubbles for blowing, etc. Dollar Tree is the brand of store that seems to have the best inventories. Our local supermarket (Farm Fresh) has a $1 section and has colored foam soap. My son would not touch shaving cream at OT, but would rub it all over the wall in the shower. And he cleaned my wall. We have played with stress balls. Made our own stress balls with corn starch in balloons – I don’t like the feeling of corn starch. I have a vibrating pillow from Walgreens drug store that my son likes to play with. On one of these lists was a lady who makes weighted blankets and sells them on Ebay. Ebay is a resource to be very careful of – you don’t know the quality of what you are buying, so something may be a very good deal or maybe not. There are some things that I am not going to be able to find somewhere else and am going to have to cough up the money for the good stuff. I have before and I will again. In the meantime, I do what I can with what I can. Just wanted to contribute the budget side of home OT to the conversation – that is basically where books like the Out-Of-Synch Child Has Fun come from. I love the abilitations catalog and have poured over it quite a few times. My wish list is about the same as my annual salary. Take care. Guest guest
Sorry it took me so long to respond but I have been having computer problems...grrrr! I had a nice long list from racking my wore out mind on some things we use around here and then my computer froze up and crashed. So here I go again Today was an extra high level of needing sensory input! Now granted sometimes things work better than others and it is all trail & error on our part (so don't laugh at some of the things we do) Tonight alone we have had to do the sock thing, which he insists on me putting 2 pairs of socks on him that are somewhat fitting. Yes 2 pairs on each foot. Then we had to "swaddle" him in a blanket or as we call it the Burrito. All this was after his 30 min bath till the water turned cold and his hands looked like raisins. Then he had to do his run and jump and roll across the beanbag about a million times not really but it seems that way when you are trying to settle down 3 kids for bedtime. Plus he had to jump on his trampoline to the 100 count play game on it at least 3x in a row. All this was just in the hour before bedtime. I get tired some days just watching him. Anyway here are some other items that we use around here to help with different things. We bought those cheap 2pk of flashlights from Wal-Mart that come with batteries. They are very easy to switch on/off. He loves to play with them. That Moon Sand is great too. When he can't play outside with his sandbox this is a good alternative. Yes its a bit messy but so is play-doh. But this will vacuum up rather easy. And you were right on bath stuff. I stock up after Christmas on the bath crayons, soaps, playsets , foams, etc. Always a big hit around here and rather cheap too. Dollar stores are great... Yes Dollar Tree is my fav too. The vibrating toothbrushes, wipe on/off mats, the little plastic craft boxes have numerous uses, and if your child is old enough or has a passion for tools like mine does (yes we monitor him) there is a great selection of those too. He has been taking apart things since he was 2 to replace batteries or just see how it worked. We even get creative with the sponges, paint brushes and a plastic squirt bottle of water. Give that boy a water bottle and a squeegee and he will go to town on the windows..lol Just have LOTS of towels handy for the water mess. Then we have a 6ft beanbag (really foam filled) that I had got about 2 years ago really cheap from overstock.com. That thing has been a creative and sensory outlet for all the kids. It has been used as a slide when one end is propped on the couch. They will even squeeze under it (I make sure their head stays out). Jumped on of course. Tent making. All the kids run and "fly" on to it. Above all its great to lay on, me & hubby are guilty of falling asleep on it trying to watch a movie after kids are in bed. The latest thing the kids are doing is jumping from the new trampoline on to it. My couch is very grateful. I am sure there are other things too that I have completely forgotten about but when I remember something that really worked I will post it. We have never been to an OT but that is in our game-plan in the next couple of months. I cant wait to see things there and how I can incorporate what they do into things we can do at home. Well I hope some of these things give others ideas.
