Guest guest
I don't think the heightened sense of smell is caused by the OCD but many people with OCD also have sensory issues. My dad and I can smell anything and everything and spend a lot of time trying to track it down (picture us crawling around on the ground at family events, smelling all the furniture and such.) My dad also has an incredible sense of taste but he can't hear certain sounds (not related to OCD or sensory things but probably the result of working around loud things.) My oldest daughter is also sensitive to smell and gags very easily. Oh, the fun. Kelley in NV

Guest guest
Hi Kim, This type of behavior could be a part of OCD, but it is not at all unusual for OCD kids to also have some sensory issues over and above the ocd. My son has had difficulty with smell, touch, sound and texture of clothing and foods. It was not until he was prescribed Prozac at age 4 that some of his discomfort in these areas was alleviated to some extent. When some of these issues crop up from time to time, then I know it may be that he needs his SSRI increased! Tommy is one of those kids who has benefited from both medication and CBT/ERP. Sometimes kids need to have medication prior to beginning therapy, so that they can attend to the therapy. Tommy is a child who has been very successful with therapy at a young age, but would not have been able to partake in it if he did not have medication first. OCD so ruled our lives that he needed the anti obsessional qualities of the meds to help him to break free of the chains of OCD and to help him not be so afraid of changing the rituals that had become such a part of his life. The meds helped him to be a little more comfortable in his own skin! in Southeastern PA Kim <missmeowza@...> wrote: Have any of you noticed your children having a heightened sense of smell? Guest guest
Kim, Both of my ocd kids do this, where my nt dd does not. Weird huh? hugs Judy
Guest guest
I will add, like the others, that my ocd kids also both have sensory integration disorder . I agree that may be the cause of the heightened sense of smell, rather than the ocd. hugs Judy Kim <missmeowza@...> wrote: Have any of you noticed your children having a heightened sense of smell? Guest guest
Yes! We are a sensory integration dysfunction family, also. K's dad and I have sensory issues... so the apple didn't fall too far! The other day I was rubbing a fork on a glass bowl to get the pepper off when I was beating eggs. The sound was a little annoying but she covered her ears and started screaming for me to stop. It made me think. I ordered the book " Maxium Ride " by . If you're familiar with his book " The Lake House, " its along the same theme. It's about children who were mutated with bird genes, so they are half kid/half bird. They are smart and tough and have heightened senses, and they fly! I'm going to start re-reading it with her and hopefully it will open a dialogue. It was written for the preteen/teen age, but is fun to read. At last... a healthy bedtime ritual!!! Have a nice week everyone... stay strong, > > Have any of you noticed your children having a heightened sense of > smell? My daughter can detect any odd odor, a lot that I cannot detect > myself. Guest guest
Oh yeah, I wanted to mention. Our therapist said that OCD can occur secondary to sensory integration dysfuntion. That has happend to me a bit. It's good to know what's going on. > Have any of you noticed your children having a heightened sense of > smell? Guest guest
I have a heightened sense of smell myself and I THINK I'm ok - but the more you read and hear on here and in books I think we could all diagnose ourselves with something - LOL! eileen PS I thought I smelled gas just this morning - and many times my nose has detected leaks - including carbon monoxide headaches when our alarm hadn't detected it yet - could be a good thing! :-) Quoting Kim <missmeowza@...>: > Have any of you noticed your children having a heightened sense of > smell? Guest guest
YES! But for Abby, I think it is because she has sensory issues, as well. A big part of her sensory issues were relating to food, much of it revolving around smells. Sharon OCD Children - Heightened Sense of Smell? Guest guest
We think our OCD child was possibly on the autism spectrum (no one could guess by looking at him). We are doing a biomedical treatment with him which is very popular in the autism world and the first thing to be corrected was his heightened sense of hearing and smell. I believe large doses of magnesium cured it.
