Guest guest
Hey everyone, I know it's been a while since I have posted anything but things have been a little busy. had another Developmental Ped appointment yesterday. This time we saw a Dr. instead of the NP that he always sees. She just wanted someone else to give us their input becuase she says sometimes a fresh eye can help. Well this fresh eye didn't really help, she actually wound up confusing me a whole lot more than I already was. She doesn't think has autism. Well for the last 9 months that's what we'd been told and that's what we accepted. Now someone is telling me that autism is not right and I have to start all over on figuring my son out. She thinks he might have ADHD. She looked at the GARS tests from the past visits and said that the school had scored him as not having autism and that I had scored him as having it. Well that wasn't right because the school put that he had a low average of having autism. The school's diagnosticians had some concerns of autism when they first met him so I know it wasn't all in my head. Anyway, his appointment wasn't till 3:00 that afternoon. He didn't get to have a nap cause as soon as he got off the bus from school they had to load up to come get me so we could go. Needless to say he was very fidgety and antsy because he was doing everything in his power to keep from falling asleep. She just didn't seem to account for that when she was doing her tests on him in the office. She did 2 of the tests where she shows him pictures and says "which one is digging?" Well he'd point to one and she'd say " are you sure?" So of course he starts thinking well maybe I'm wrong and changes his answer. She didn't really engage him, she would look at the paper she was writing on and then she'd ask the question not even looking up and then look up when he pointed to his answer and then she'd look back down and write and then go to flipping pages. She refused to reword questions so that could understand them better. She was getting frustrated with him because he was fidgety and not really responding the way she wanted him to. She was in and out of the appointment to go get this and to go get that. She said that it couldn't be autism because if it was he'd present all the charactaristics all the time no matter if he was in school or at home or in the grocery store. Well I'm thinking that some of all have said that you'r kids are one way at home and a completely different child at school. Am I wrong? She thinks it could also be a chromosome problem because he had several "deformations". His ears are really flat, one of them is pointed at the top like a little elf's ear. His feet turn in a little. His pallet is really high, narrow, and the arch is really high and narrow. She also thought she detected a heart murmur but wasn't sure because was being too noisy. So now we have to have the High Resolution DNA test and the Fragile X Test done to see if that could be causing some of his behaviours. gets along amazingly well with adults and I think that that is because he thinks that they all want him to act a certain way and that if he doesn't act that way then he is gonna get in trouble. He is usuallly really good for new people he meets because he doesn't know how they are gonna react and so the Dev Ped said that he couldn't have autism because the core problem of autism was social interaction and he had no problem there because he interacted with her just fine during the tests and stuff. To top everything off, she actually asked me why did I want my son to have Autism, what did I gain by him having autism? So we are having his teacher, both teacher's aides, his OT, his ST, his Grandparents, and me redo the GARS tests to see what they say. I couldn't believe she actually thought I wanted my son to have autism. I thought about telling her yeah that's what every mother dreams of for her son. So the only thing I can think of is to buy a video camera and record him and take the tapes with me to that woman. Hopefully I'll be able to go back to seeing the NP that he'd been seeing before. Well sorry to have made that so long, but I look foreward in hearing what you all have to say about this appointment and how your children are. Guest guest
Leighanne,Sounds like what I am going through with Regional Center - Hope has a diagnosis of HFA - with ABA, GF Diet and Meds she no longer has the physical characteristics of autism, but it is still there - regional center says she is pdd - nos - I am appealing it. I would simply look at things like this - no one knows your child as well as you do - you have to advocate for him! Educate yourself and know the DSM - you can do it!!!!!!Leighanne Ratliff <a_cute_tx_cowgirl@...> wrote: Hey everyone, I know it's been a while since I have posted anything but things have been a little busy. had another Developmental Ped appointment yesterday.
