Had SSI appointment today - little bit of a rant

my son has aspergers adhd and possibly bi polar mood disorder and because of the distance to some of the specialists i've had to cancel many of them due to being a single mom working and dad won't help at all or pay for anything even though required to by divorce decree. i make a decent living but the specialists are very expensive and few and far between that even understand aspergers and the one closest to me doesn't even take insurance. ssi would not even listen to any of this. they just asked me my income and declined me. i'm not asking for a handout, i live paycheck to paycheck and only wanted some medical help...... i have no idea how they base it but they would not even do anything but give me a phone interview. asked nothing about my son.....

Re: Had SSI appointment today - little bit of a rant

I was told our kids would not qualifiy for SSI. My daughter has Aspergers, ADHD, and Anxiety. Is SSI income based? I am really unsure of this. I am so worried about losing my job because of all the days I must take off for her. I even have a hard time making phone calls at work and all of the phone calls I make are for my daughter. At lease my daughter was approved for medical. I will see how long that lasts. Please keep be updated on this and let me know what they decide. Good Luck,

living on her own now. While she still depends on me to make sure that her bills are paid (SSI only gives her $402 a month), she is able to get herself up, get ready for school, and goes to college part time with passing grades now. Keep the faith!>>

* My son has a bank account with a lot of money given to him since birth, but it was given for COLLEGE reasons for tuition and books etc.

I am going to see if I can get this money transferred to my name, as it will count against him in April when he turns 18.

My son is severely impacted by his ADHD and Aspergers, so he has never had a job.

He has too much in the bank in his name though.

I am fearing that this will count against him for sure for SSI and for any kind of financial aide for college.

Did that person who wrote and said your daughter got SS (just before she turned 18 you applied, which is what I was told to do also and plan to do as he will be 18 in APRIL) did she get the SSI even though she was enrolling in college? She is allowed to receive it even though she will be in college?

My son does plan to go to college.

So, I thought they would turn him down for SSI??? I guess not??

Good Luck with SSI. is 18 and we're on our 6th ReApplication and Appeal! SSI keeps telling us that AS IS NOT a disability! >>

ASPERGERS does qualify, because AUTISM is a definite way to qualify and Aspergers is under the Autism spectrum!

The process is simple; I wasn't implying anything, butjust making the statement. However, they can get "picky" about spending and where it is spent. I have never had any problem for many years, but I have a friend that keeps detailedinformation for her son because there was once a problem.

Any moneys you have for your child should be put into a Trust Fund for them.Simply transferring the money will likely not work and that would show up whenthey checked your bank account. --- You need to have a Special Needs Trustanyway, as that way, their assets can be protected and you also determineTrustees, too, in the case that you are unable in any way to care for them or makedecisions for them. Get an attorney familiar with Special Needs Trusts and start there.Once you qualify, you can use the moneys for anything that will better their life, and if that is college, so be it. You just report yearly where the moneys go.

I am glad you had such a good experience but my dd is 13 and I have been trying to get SSI for her since late 2003! I finally broke down and got a lawyer and we are going through the appeal process AGAIN! (I had to reapply once due to missing their deadline by 1 week and had to start all over again.) Anyway, I hope it goes that smoothly for you as well, maybe it makes a difference the younger they are.... My dd has AS, ADHD, ODD and possibly bi polar disorder and is on the government "Mental Health Waiver Program" and they still denied her last time so we shall see. Do not want to be gloom and doom or anything, just thought you should know if CAN take longer even with kids. Seems like it depends on where you are and how knowledgeable the people are for SS who handle the applications. Good luck and God bless!DeeDeemarie <mariereyes@...> wrote: >> My son, Owen, was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, as well as > Communication Disorder, last month. I applied on Sept 4, 2005 and I got my first check even before I got my approval letter on Oct. 20. The intake worker isnt the one who makes the decision they just take your info, I had the same

questions, Also don't let people tell you these ridiculous storys about how many years they had to wait because they go by a totally differant criteria for children than they do with adults. I can't imagine you wont get approved. Good luck.

Our problem was our assets, the amount of money in the bank and property

owned.

I don't think we will re-apply

SSI is supplemental security income and yes it is income based. As far as the job goes, have you been there more than 12 months? If so apply for FMLA, Family medical leave act, it is federal and protects your job if you have to take off time to care for yourself, an elderly parent or a child due to serious/longterm illness/medical problem. It did not save my job but it did get me unemployment and the ability to force them to take me back (which I elected against. hostile enviornment etc.) if I wanted to go back. It is federal so it does not matter what state you are in, as long as you are in the US. Every human resources department should have the info unless your company is under a certain number of employees, that is the only exception I know of. Good luck and God bless! Not to argue , but as we all know, because the rules SAY that Autism and therefore AS qualify, the reality of the situation depends on the knowledge of the people you are dealing with at SS! So the acutal answer can be very different. I too have been told that AS is not a disibility by SS. Just some input! I was told that neither of my children one of whom has HFA (although regional center qualifies her as pdd) and AS/HFA qualify for any services. We make too much money for SSI (I called) which I laughed about - seems like in a large family there is always a shortage of time and money! I was also advised against trying to get any type of services for my oldest HFA/AS daughter, because I have been able to arrange extensive interventions for her through the school and with therapists. It simply isn't worth it... I am not trying to say anyone is wrong, but the whole purpose of being in a group like this is to have many different perspectives and information.... If I were not on this list, I would never would have learned about gluten free diets - and with that info which I initially struggled with - I would still have a child who literally acted like a little wild animal. Hope is now

believe me i can totally understand that. we were just lucky that we

got through the first time even though they only sent 30/month at

first. i was unable to work because siomeone had to take care of

him. you know i bet if the government had to go through what

everyday people go through just to get help they would understand.

even with ssi i have to carry him on my insurance because they say

he has reach the limits of somethings, such as eye appointments, the

feeding clinic, etc.

** I have heard of many people getting SS for ADHD and Aspergers and other things.

However, there is a lot of things that they look for and why it is needed and so forth, and a person's financial information and the parents' financial situation and information all count when a child is under 18. So, anyone can be denied. I do know Aspergers under Autism is a label that SS covers, but you are right, does not mean automatic coverage. Also, many have to go to a lawyer and fight a few times as they get denied the first time all the time.

I am on two SS lists online and hear all kinds of stories etc.

My daughter Lily was approved for SSI, she is autistic. We applied

12/17/07 and received first check 10/01/08. If you are denied, make

them show you why!!!!! Has your child been diagnosed by a

psychologist?!?!? Because that is really important. Plus leave

lots of paper trail with services (i.e. behavior, occupational,

speech etc.) I took in 3 huge folders and all her daily paperwork

from before she was 3. There is help at your local Parents helping

Parents. http://www.php.com/ They are a goldmine of information!

They might qualify medically, but they probably won't qualify

financially because that is based on the parents income.
