Guest guest
Hi Tammy; Time is an abstract concept, something that is extremely difficult for children on the autism/Asperger's spectrum. Children with Asperger's have a literal/concrete thinking style. They can understand that the referent of 1 directly " equates " with a physical value or single unit. The struggle becomes when they are asked to understand the situationality of meaning where a context determines a specific value. Use a big calendar and move a picture of your son along each day toward the holiday in question, kind of like a advent calendar. Children with Asperger's Syndrome do well with visual information but have a heck of a time understanding language because most language uttered by adults is less than concrete or literal Good luck! Guest guest
My son is 11 and still has a difficult grasp on the concept of time.. Keep working on the calendar. Have him cross off the days every morning when he gets up and tell him how many "sleeps" he has left until Halloween. Concept of time can be very difficult with these guys. Just keep working on it and it will get better. Plus he is only 6 so even typical kids have difficulty. Guest guest
My son is the same way. I have been working on time for 3 years now. I just keep waiting for the day it will finally " click " . He is slowly making progress. The other day, I told him Halloween was in 29 days. He said, " oh, thats almost a month " My jaw hit the floor! I was so proud of him! That was the first time he demonstrated that he understood what a month was. Guest guest
I always remind my kids that "if you do not go to school, you cannot go to do something special (trick or treating etc) after school" also try telling him he does not want to wear the costume out before trick or treat because then it will not be "new and special" for Halloween/trick or treat. Tell him it is a special occasion and he should want to keep it just for that! My son wears old costumes around all the time. I have to force him out of them for school etc too but I remind him of what fun he has at school so he is not as mad when I make him change. Those are my best suggestions. Either way, be prepared for fits/meltdowns and attitude. AS kids CAN be redirected, it just takes more effort and dealing with a bit more attitude! lol OH! you could try having him do small things to "lead up to" Halloween, like ok, we have to have you decorate/color a bag/container for your candy before then, can you help us with these decorations tonight (maybe turn them on or plug them in with supervision each night), before Halloween, etc. Think of things like that to stay in the area of interest but not on the trick or treating to distract him/occupy him until it is time to actually go. Good luck and God bless!DeeDeetamsexyred34@... wrote: MY SON WE WENT AND GOT COSTUME THINKIN THIS WOULD HELP .. Guest guest
I don't think it's a rule though. When my daughter was six, and asked about time, I told her the basics of one o'clock, etc. and that each space between the numbers (which were covered with tape that had dots instead of written integers) was worth 5 minutes. She was then telling time, and began to do incredible math with the clock. We'd say how many minutes between now (say it was 5:37 p.m.) and 10:42 tomorrow morning, and before we finished the word 'morning', she'd have the answer. Correctly. Maybe the numbers are too abstract. Dots are great. Each one is so individual. Francine In a message dated 10/6/2006 2:41:59 P.M. I LOVE clocks and have grandfather clocks, mantel, ships clock etc and they will stand in the living room and say MOM, what time is it? I'll say look at the clock, Just tell me they say, so I'll say a quarter til 4. At first they thought that meant 25 min til 4 but now at least they know it means 3;45..
