Guest guest
My daughter is 9 also and has had sleeping problems forever. I tried the melatonin, didn't work. She has taken up to 3 tablets of the benadryl. My p-doc said if that doesn't work, stop the benadryl because it can actually do the opposite. She needs sleep medication or will not fall asleep. The trazadone works ok for my daughter. Hope this helps Hugs Judy
Guest guest
I would talk to your Dr. about giving her something else. I had a sudden onset of insomnia about 2 years ago now and it's TERRIBLE not being able to fall asleep. I started having anxiety about it. I've tried A LOT of different things over these 2 years. 3 mg.s of melatonin worked for me for about a week. Then it made me feel all weird and groggy, but I still couldn't fall asleep. I don't know what your Dr. would prescribe for children for sleep, but I remember reading some that have a medication added just for sleep. Was the Zoloft given at night so it could help her? Maybe the removal of that has spiked her anxiety just enough so that she can't sleep. I've tried 2 things that have helped long term and that was Klonopin or Lunesta. (Not at the same time, of course!) Benedryl didn't help much. I'm sure she's frustrated--I know I am! Dina

Guest guest
Hi, just to comment that Benedryl will help at first with my kids, for like a few days, but then wires them up a bit or something; won't help with sleep. Does me similar, I can't take a full dose. I may get sleepy but makes my heart begin to race and has me waking practically every hour. Now my sons don't wake up at night but it did quit working to help sleep. Just our experience! I have some melatonin but we've never used. I do believe 3mg is what I read for max dosage. When does she take her vitamins (what time of day)? > > My 9 year old daughter is having a really hard time falling asleep. Guest guest
I give my 11 year old ds benedryl (2 tablets) almost every night to fall asleep. It has really helped since december of last year. He also has allergies which it helps with too. I too was concerned about giving it to him but I have checked with the pediatrician, psychiatrist, and pharmacist and they all reassued me that it is safe for him to take for this long and that he will not become addicted. It really works well for him and I have not noticed any side effects. He also takes Zoloft, 50mg in am and 25mg in pm.

For some people it actually causes excitability every time they take it. Other's get that reaction after a couple days on it. It just depends on the person. You especially have to watch this with kids. LT
Guest guest
Just passing this on, although I know nothing about it...yesterday my daughter's therapist said she uses valerian (natural supplement) to help her fall asleep, she says it works great for her. > > My 9 year old daughter is having a really hard time falling asleep. Guest guest
We struggled for years getting my youngest daughter to sleep at night. We have a very strict bedtime and bedtime routine and we try to get her up every morning at around the same time so that her sleep pattern does not get messed up. She takes a small amount of Clonidine about an hour before bedtime and is able to fall asleep. I understand that Clonidine has been used for helping children fall asleep for years and is considered to be quite harmless. I know that without it, there is no sleep for ! Good luck!
