Guest guest
Carolyn, My 9yr old daughter has Asp. and she also has Eczema. What's worse is she absolutely hates lotion. I have her soak in the Aveeno bath stuff which helps. My 6yr old is very noise sensitive & won't eat crackers or cookies because they are too noisy in her head when she chews. I thought that was maybe the reason your grandson also dislikes those things. Both my girls are extremely picky eaters & complain about smells that no one else smells. My 9yr old takes meds too help with her moods & anxiety. They make a huge difference. E. Guest guest
My Matt has always struggled with eczema as well, and lots of allergies (food and environmental). Like the Asperger's and Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome weren't enough, huh? I always attributed his eczema to his fair skin (he is a fair skinned red head). And he has many skin reactions to things....certain laundry detergents (Tide is the worst), he is also allergic to mosquito bites and sunscreens. He gets terrible hives and welts from sunscreen. And being a fair skinned red head, we have always been concerned about sunburn. Our answer was to keep him out of the sun vigilantly. And keep his skin covered and head covered with a hat. That has been the only solution. Anyway, he always resisted lotions and creams to take care of his eczema and skin reactions. He hated the greasy heavy feel of them, probably due in part to sensory issues. We FINALLY found one that he actually likes, and I wanted to pass on the name in case you want to try it out. It's only available thru prescription, so see your dermatologist if you want more info. The name of the lotion is Cutivate (fluticosone propionate). Warning though, it is EXPENSIVE....a 60 ml. bottle is about $105, but we paid $30 with our prescription plan. It is a wonder cream, though, best we have found so far. Guest guest
Hi , Thankyou for the response, I had not thought about the crunchy crackers being too noisy for him. You know now that you mention it, he does like to eat softer stuff. The other day he was getting whiney and I knew he was getting hungry so I put him in his high chair and warmed up two jars of toddler food for him. I was shoveling it in, and he didn't really like it, but I think was so hungry he didn't care. Then I had the idea maybe he would like it better if I warmed it up more, well that was a mistake. The change in the routine stopped the momentum, and I kind of knew it would happen. He refused anymore, and I poured what was left back in one jar, so could measure he had eaten one jar, so was happy. And I gave the rest to the cat. I had eczema as a kid, all over my inner arms, we think it was because I was allergic to wool. But Lucas had his shortly after he was born, on his face. And a couple of times it got in his eyes, and got infection and he had to go on antibiotic. I guess his dad had this kind, the doctor said it is on the spectrum of allergy type of things, like asthma, hay fever, and his mom, and me, and his sister all have those things in varying degrees. He is just a little different than the other two were, or my four kids, so I am wondering why. Maybe it is nothing. Like with Lucas's brother, , he is 6 now, he was just craaaaaaazy about his pacifier, and a little fuzzy blanket, had them both with him all the time since he was born at the hospital, but little Lucas could not stand it in his mouth, never wanted the pacifier at all, had a blankie for awhile, but wasn't too attached to it. This one is going to be interesting that is for sure! Carolyn in Oregon Re: Interesting behaviors here? Guest guest
I guess my is a bit different from most! He doesn't really have any bad skin problems, just some dry patches now and again. But he loves putting hand creams or lotion on his skin! Whether we need it or not. Any cream will do. I guess that's a sensory thing too but in reverse as he seems to like the feeling of the cream on his skin!! He even keeps a sample bottle of hand cream in his desk at school "just in case" His teacher is okay with this, as long as he uses it properly, which he does! Guest guest
Oh yes, there is another odd behavior I left out. Lucas bangs his head on the floor, quite hard actually, whenever he is mad. Usually he didn't get a toy he wanted from his big brother, or got impatient waiting to go out the door or something. You would think if it hurt him he wouldn't do it, but then again, it is why most of us don't do it, it hurts the FIRST time. Hmmm. Carolyn Re: Interesting behaviors here? Guest guest
I also have OCD to some extent. I wear gloves when I clean the kitchen or the bathroom. When I was first married my husband grabbed me a towel & set it on top of the toilet. I freaked & told him to get me another one because I couldn't use it now! I also can't stand stuff on my hands I eat most everything with a knife & a fork. My therapist had me do an excercise wher I was supposed to see how long I could go eating popcorn without washing my hands. Needless to say it wasn't very long. My daughter (9) has similar issues with toilets. We went to the zoo & it was spring break week & everyone & their mother was there. The parking lot was so crowded that we had to park far away. They had to pee so we were forced to use a portapotty. Good god that was the worst! We got in there & she couldn't pee. She said her pee was scared. My other daughter (6) said well mine's not so get out of the way! We were in there for probably 15min before she could go. I was also completely grossed out! E. Guest guest
Carolyn, my nt 6 yr old son banged his head on his bedroom door and wall when we were breaking him of his "binky" (pacifier) He did it so hard he left bruises on his forehead, I freaked out and took him to his ped, he said it is actually quite normal and they will not do it hard enough to seriously hurt themselves, I said, he is leaving bruises for goodness sake and he said, it is not doing him any "real" damage. He was right, he went through a phase of banging his head (according to the doctors, it was a substitute for the calming affect of his binky) I looked online and lo and behold, boys were three or four times to bang their head than girls...... we used to joke that now we had a reason for brain damage later in life! (just kidding!) But he is a happy, healthy, nt little boy now so...... That was pretty much my point. DeeDeeCarolyn <charper777@...> wrote: Oh yes, there is another odd behavior I left out. The hair thing is funny I got a giggle out of that. Hope was like that about flies for the longest time... His name is Lucas, and he will be 2 years old soon. Well he is afraid of hairs, if a hair gets on his fingers he screams like it is after him, and a hair ball can send him into quite a tizzy. Also if anything is floating in the bathtub, just now it was a little speck and I caught it in a bowl and that seemed to help him. Other times he gets scared of a few soap suds, or even the water moving too much. . See the all-new, redesigned .com. Check it out.
Guest guest
My NT son also did the head banging thing, one time it made him sick to his stomach!!! Doctor said it wasn't a big deal, and it really wasn't. He grew out of it quickly, thank goodness. Estevan, Saskatchewan Canada -- Re: Interesting behaviors here?
