Can you turn the top of the diaper in? Like roll it in to create a lip... AKA a

poop stopping zone? Could you roll up something like a thin hand towel and put

it between the diaper and cast? Do you have the edge of the diaper duct taped?

Just throwing crazy ideas out there..... Trying to think of how you could create

a buffer zone.

Hi! I just want to say that I know exactly how you feel. My son, jay, got his

first cast Thursday and we've already had an explosion up the back. I think I

got it all cleaned out, but it makes me nervous there could still be some up in

there! We are going to try out the flip cloth diapers that were mentioned in the

thread below. I'm hoping that's our answer! Good luck!

I have a question Jenn. When you wash the inserts, do you use regular laundry

detergent? Also, how many diapers and inserts would you recommend buying? (if we

find they work for us). I'm totally clueless when it comes to cloth diapering.

Thanks!

Lot's of people use a special detergent, though you can use regular detergent.  You try to avoid fragrances, dyes, enzymes, fabric softeners and brighteners as they can build up on your diapers and cause leaks.  If you do use regular detergent you want to use between 1/3 and 1/4 of the recommended amount.  Check out this great chart to help you figure out what you want to use.  We sell Eco Sprout and Rockin' Green.  A couple other popular ones are Charlies Soap and 's and BioKlean.  The most important thing is that it washes clean from the diapers.  Do you have a top or a front loader?  They wash a bit differently.

People usually wash every 2 - 3 days.  Rinse warm, hot wash, then warm rinse.  People usually have between 28 and 24 diapers.  WIth the flip that would be 18-24 covers and 6 and 8 covers.  Though once moms get hooked they usually go diaper crazy! lol.

Just keep sending the questions over as they come up! It can take a bit of trail and error but it is actually pretty easy once you get the hang of it.  :) Jenn

I agree with Tame. Folding the diaper up the cast never made sense to me. Thats like inviting the poop up the cast. We finally learned to tuck a lip inward on the diaper. Front and back. Totally helped. Also duct tape along the bottom of the cast all around and tuck it as far up the cast as you can. This will help keep the cast from absorbing the morsture. Another thing...how do you guys clean the " explosion " from behind their back?

Jay had another one up his back tonight and I got him cleaned up, pulled the

shirt down, dried it, etc. however, when I looked behind his cast w a

flashlight, there was some that I could not reach! I'm at a total loss for what

to do.

Can you pull it out more for a better clean? The shirts are super stretchy….Some parents remove, wash, and reapply the shirts, but this is up to the doc that applied the cast. If tshirt removal/reapplication is not an option, I would floss the cast with a pr. Of nylons dipped in alcohol to try and clean up as much as possible. ,We seemed to ALWAYS have explosions because it seemed like if Kylie pooped sitting, it was going up her back, end of story. I eventually put a panty liner in the cast, which was a little tricky at first but i found having her lie on her stomach over a chair or something just to open the space up between the back and the cast so that I could get my hand in there. That was a lifesaver!I also took the shirt off every few days to wash, there is a you tube video that was quite helpful in figuring out how to get it off. It took about 20 min the first time, but then about 3 minutes once we watched the video! We're finally potty trained, and I don't miss the explosions!Becky (Mom to Kylie who just went into cast # 5)On 2012-03-11, at 2:06 PM, rachelmjacobs wrote:

,

Yes...I can pull it out more to clean it. What's the best solution to use to get

some of the odor out? It doesn't smell terrible...but there's def some odor!

Haha. I am going to try the nylon thing today. Thanks so much for your help!

I'm not sure what I'd do without the help and advice of this group. ;)
