Guest guest
Hello Rinita,There is a measuring technique called the RVAD (rib vertebral angle degree) developed by Mehta back in the early 70’s that will help determine if the infants scoli is progressive, or resolving. The RVAD can be measured with a pencil and ruler and all ped orthos should be familiar with it. If the RVAD is over 20, its considered progressive. Under 20, self resolving. Some docs feel the RVAD is only 80% effective, but in my opinion, its better than nothing. 80% effective is far better than not knowing and having to wait another 6 months.  There is an article on the RVAD in the Files section of CAST. Check it out when you can and let us know if you have questions.HRH From: infantile scoliosis treatment [mailto:infantile scoliosis treatment ] On Behalf Of rinita aswinSent: Monday, October 24, 2011 8:49 PMinfantile scoliosis treatment Subject: Re: introducing myself and need more information Dear Tame, Well we are still uncertain whether the scoliosis are progressive or not since we only made the x-ray once and we are told to wait for another 6 month before we can take another x-ray. regards Tita From: Tame Olson <dazies2001@...>infantile scoliosis treatment Sent: Monday, 24 October 2011 6:05 PMSubject: Re: introducing myself and need more information Maybe the last doctor realizes your son has progressive scoliosis and surgery will be in his future. I hope you are able to find a Mehta trained doctor to help. Sorry things get so difficult sometimes. The last doctor had made me fall into tears and encourage me to seek an alternative. Surgery with such a minimal curve is ridiculous. Most docs wouldn't even consider casting w such a small degree of curvature. Have you read the links on the ISOP site? Living in a third world country, scoliosis is something new and rarely people ever talked about. I have meet with many orthopedic surgeon here in Indonesia, and they solution bring doubt in my heart. my son is currently 18 degrees laying down, and they all suggest that if the curve increase by 7 degrees within 6 month then he must proceed to surgery. My biggest doubt is that i can not imagine an 18 months old going through such pain. He just started walking by himself and really enjoying such activity, meanwhile after a surgery there's a main possibility he would have to postponed such activity for a while, how can you explained that to an 18 month old boy?. Therefore I've search in internet whether there is another alternative to cure his scoliosis or at least stop the curve to increase which finally lead me to find this group which is also recommended by ISOP. My greatest hope is that i am able to find that alternative. I currently lived in Jakarta, Indonesia, for those who don't know where that is, well its around 24 hour drive from Bali. I have a few question relating with the cast that most people in this group had discussed, can anyone explained to me about the cast, and how it is done and whether it is effective as an alternative? I have also heard there's a hospital in Melbourne that can apply this cast (that is the nearest from a country where I lived) who can apply this cast, please correct me if I'm wrong but if it is true can anyone tell me which hospital? Thank you all, i really admired all the moms who has joined this group and hopefully i can be as strong as you are. Maybe it was just a bad xray?? Do you take them standing? We just went through a big episode w our son. The doc wanted to stop casting and brace bc of a plateau of 3 casts w no change and we really had to push to continue but I'm glad we did bc this cast he grew 3 inches and although we opted not to xray I know his curve had to decrease a little.... My long winded point is that you really just never know what each cast will bring and although it's an emotional roller coaster progress is possible. Can you discuss regression via email w the RN or maybe move up your next cast date. I know it's sooo ridiculously hard sometimes:( Im sorry I can't help more! If I had a back fixing wand I would wave it across the universe.TameSent from my iPhoneOn Oct 19, 2011, at 8:48 AM, " hallmark13 " <hallmark13@...> wrote:Well...we kind of got some rough news on Monday with Cast #8. Jonas was around 25 degrees in cast #7 but once they applied cast #8 his xray showed around 40 degrees!! Not being completely satisfied w/ the results Dr. D'A made some adjustments which included some padding on one side and cutting off a peice under the under of the other side. They did not do another xray after the adjustments were made so we have no clue where is curve is now. My husband and I left there feeling very confused on what to do next. And b/c the docs were so busy we didn't even get to hear how they felt about the possible regression. I am going to call today. My heart can't stand to watch and wait...if the cast isn't holding him anymore. :-(HollieMama of Jonas 3 yo in cast #8.
