Guest guest
You have the same doctor we have. I hope Dr. C doesn't give you the bad news that he just gave me yesterday. I'm still devastated.SuzanneSent from my iPhoneOn Feb 17, 2012, at 6:44 AM, "zwitkin" <zwitkin@...> wrote: Hello All I am pretty sure I know the answer to this one but would love some advice/support especially after reading about the child with the pressure sore ( I apologize I cannot remember the name). Binyamin who is 26 months old has his second cast on for approx 4 weeks. I noticed about three days ago a red area on his back ( crest of his pelvis) which I know is a stage 1 pressure sore ( I worked in rehabilitation with clients who have had all stages of pressure sores). There is really nothing to do since the cast is pressing into the bone exactly at that point. I went to a plastic surgeon yesterday who said watch it and he would trim the cast if I want. I figured I would wait a few days but I am getting very nervous. Once these sores get past stage 1 it snowballs and then we have to wait to cast until all clear. My gut( based on knowledge) is to try to trim the cast today ( the doctor or we will cut it) and if not just cut the cast off and try to get recasted next week. Dr. C in Shriners Phili said we can see him but we are just trying to avoid the 2 hour drive ( just to look, for casting we will drive wherever!!) thanks in advance and I appreciate the responses as this is definitely a time sensitive issue.... Guest guest
Agreed.... I would trim the cast in that area to try and avoid the pressure sore. Ide also take pics of the stage 1 sore (prior)and send on to the treating doc to keep him in the loop. Good luck. Please keep us posted. Guest guest
Hey! Sierra is on her 9th cast and we had a pressure sore on cast #1.....we did not have to trim but just flared it out b/c it was on her side cutting into her stomach! I would NOT wait....it will just get worse I believe. Have the cast trimmed down. You do not want shin break down and have to wait for the sore to heal before casting again. Go with your Gut...that is what I always do and it has got us like I said to cast #9 with no skin issues at all. I always take the last cast cut off with us and talk extensively with whichever cast Tech. is going to be trimming Sierra’s cast. I know them all by name now. She stay in her cast 12 weeks and it has to be doable! Good Luck! Kristi Mommy to Sierra...12 mo. 34 degrees..1st cast April 2010....Sierra will be 3 ys. in April 2012 and we are down to 9 degrees OUT of cast and –6 IN cast. (She has a very stiff spine) we go back March 6th for either 10th cast or go to nite time brace..depending on her #’s OUT of cast! Guest guest
Zehava – I saw this on my daughter, too. Hers never progressed past this point though. There are probably a lot of factors involved: your son’s skin, the shape of the cast, the way it rubs, how often it rubs, etc. I’m sure it’s different for every child. How much longer does Binyamin have to go until his next cast? Can you check the site every day to see if it’s getting better/worse or not changing? Guest guest
Can you pull the cast out with pliers? You could put a buffer. We have used tough pads by . And and curad squares w adhesive around edges until the redness goes away. We have had areas of friction primarily which cause red areas and rawness. We have popped out many a cast w pliers.TameSent from my iPhoneOn Feb 17, 2012, at 6:08 AM, Suzanne Rulka <suzy3333@...> wrote: You have the same doctor we have. Guest guest
I might not be understanding exactly where the sore is but id try using a pair of pliers and fanning that part out away from his body a bit.
