Guest guest
We go to Cincy as well. We have been casting for over a year and he told us the same thing. Addyson still hasn't had one but we have made improvements with casting so he said it wasn't necessary. I believe we have a very good doctor at Cincinnati Children's, and was surprised when he said we didn't need to have an MRI done on her right now. He said he wanted to cast her and if she wasn't improving then we could turn to the MRI. His reasoning is that he doesn't want to sedate a child any more than necessary (I completely agree). I feel quite confident if I pushed for an MRI the doctor would proceed with one, but again I don't want to put her through any more than necessary. Thoughts? Guest guest
Jaylin had a MRI done before anything because they wanted to make sure there wasn't anything causing the spine to curve besides scoliosis. I think if it was me, I'd ask for one because you never know. Jaylin is 5 now and his first cast was in dec, he was 34 out of cast and 13 in cast.Live, laugh, and loveJoyOn Feb 25, 2012, at 8:59 PM, "rachelmjacobs" <rachelmjacobs@...> wrote: Again, I'm sure I'm worrying over nothing, but this fact still bothers me, so I wanted to ask for other's opinions. Guest guest
I would get an MRI because you never know if there is a problem causing the scoliosis and if there is you want to fix that before casting so you can resume casting as young as possible. That said go ahead with your first cast. Ask them do schedule the MRI at the same time as cast #2 so that he doesn't have to have anesthesia more than necessary. We got out MRI while in cast 2. Guest guest
If it was me I would still request an MRI be done. The reason I say this is there could be other underlying problems and the only way to find them is with an MRI. My son has Chiari Malformation and he had to have brain surgery before they could start casting. If they had casted before hand it could have done extra damage. I know that there are other's on here that also have children with Chiari and Syrinx's as well as tethered spinal chords. Also there are some types of congenital scoli that cannot be seen on xray and an MRI is the best way to see them. This is just my opinion but I would go for the MRI. Best of luck. Guest guest
I would get the MRI. The first thing our Riley doctor said was "We need and MRI". They are costly, but, they are safe and rule out underlying causes. They will expose her to no radiation. My son's MRI showed several syringes (syrinx) in his spinal cord. He soon had tethered cord surgery at age 7. I wish we would have know when he was younger but our old doc never recommended an MRI. After his surgery site was healed he was able to be casted. I know these decisions are hard. Guest guest
Our son actually had an MRI done before our he was casted. I am really glad we did as something else was discovered not related to our son's PIS. On the other hand, I can understand the doctor's reasoning about not having an MRI. We know our children better than anyone else and as parents we have to go with our gut instincts. Guest guest
Thanks for the replies everyone. I feel like I'm missing a crucial piece of information in regards to the MRI. I'm going to call the doctor tomorrow and talk with them. Thanks again! Momma to Ella, 5 months > > Our son actually had an MRI done before our he was casted. Guest guest
Demand the mri. My son also had a chiari malformation and had to have brain surgery before casting would be done. Good news is his chiari surgery was successful and so was casting. He is currently 8 degrees and improving without a cast or brace for 1.5yrs now! mom to isaiahSent from my Verizon Wireless 4G LTE Phone Re: Casting without an MRI If it was me I would still request an MRI be done. Guest guest
Our first doctor wanted her to get an MRI. Addie wasn't showing any symptoms to indicate that she really needed one, and we were reluctant to exposure her to the MRI. We didn't opt for one initially. Her second doctor (Dr. D in SLC) suggested one, but also said it wasn't necessary based on his evaluation. Our third doctor (here in San Diego), wanted to get one, and by that point we agreed. He also said it wasn't necessary, but was a precaution, because she didn't show any symptoms. ============================ in San DiegoFather to , 4 years old, bracing after two casts On Sat, Feb 25, 2012 at 5:59 PM, rachelmjacobs <rachelmjacobs@...> wrote: Again, I'm sure I'm worrying over nothing, but this fact still bothers me, so I wanted to ask for other's opinions. Guest guest
Hi , This is a tough one...The doc in Cin. is top notch and I trust him wholeheartedly...But, if your gut is screaming something different, you got to trust it. Please keep us posted.
