Guest guest
I agree with the suggestion of checking the list of docs ISOP has. We live in Uruguay (South America) and our daughter fina of 18 months is being treated in Shriners Salt Lake City. We are traveling there in two weeks to have her 3rd cast on. In spite of the long trip (almost 20 hours) we know that this is the best chance possible and are really happy with the way they are treating our daughter!! It´s is important to find doctors that have been trainned in Mehta Cast and have the proper table to do the procedure. Guest guest
Hi , Welcome to the group. Despite your son’s diagnosis and your worry, I am happy that you see an orthopedic doctor that knows about casting and recommends it. I live in PA. Casting is done at Philadelphia and Erie Shriners by the same doctors. My daughter is treated by one of them, and I’m very satisfied. However, she was 29 months when first casted so I have no experience with treating a 6 mo old. Best wishes! You have found a supportive group! Sherry New here. 6 month old just diagnosed. Casting questions! Hello everyone. My 6 month old was just diagnosed with Idiopathic Scoliosis. His curve is measuring 48-50 degrees. Our orthopedic Dr. said his recommendation is casting, but he does not have any first hand experience with this, nor did he know of anyone in our area that does. He is meeting with two co-workers next week to discuss my son's case and is then getting back to us. He said he'd like us to have him casted locally so that he can monitor, but this doesn't exactly appeal to me if there aren't any Dr's in the area with a lot of experience casting young babies. I, personally, have been doing as much research online as I can regarding where he can be casted. It's extremely overhwelming (as I'm sure everyone says when they are first faced with this!) I'm so glad that I found this site because there seems to be an abundance of information here. My question is this: Does anyone know of any Doctors that are known for casting in my area? We live in , MS. I searched this site and found that someone had said awhile back that the only Dr. in the south/southeast that was trained in casting was in Birmingham, AL. We are definitely willing to travel if it means getting the best possible treatment. I also have family in PA, so traveling to PA is also a possibility. (I've heard Shriners in PA casts?)I would really just like some information from someone that has been down this road...first hand. Any and all information is greatly appreciated! Guest guest
Welcome to the group and this place is a wealth of information. We are in our first cast, so we are realitively new as well. Personally I would only get casted by someone that does Mehta casting and while the current dr would like to follow progress, I would worry more about finding a properly trained dr. Guest guest
Thanks everyone! I checked out the list and found that Birmingham is the closest to us. I plan to contact Both Birmingham and Shriners in Philly. Also...I know that all insurance companies are different, but is there such a thing as them helping with travel costs? I ask bc traveling to pa every 6-8 weeks could get expensive! Thanks again...we are just ready to get him in his first cast.

Guest guest
Hi ,Welcome to CAST. It sounds like you’re headed in the right direction, so far. May I recommend a couple of things to help get you started? Please go to the Resource page of www.infantilescoliosis.org to dwnld/read a published, medical journal titled “Growth as a corrective force in the Early Treatment of progressive infantile scoliosis,”by Mehta, MD, FRCS. Also, view A New Direction DVD, which can be found in the Youtube portion of the site (in 3 parts). These 2 items along with the support and firsthand experience you receive from parents here on CAST will help you immensely on your scoli & ET journey. Please keep the questions coming. We are here to help!Sincerely,HRH From: infantile scoliosis treatment [mailto:infantile scoliosis treatment ] On Behalf Of lindsayrineerSent: Thursday, February 09, 2012 8:10 AMinfantile scoliosis treatment Subject: New here. 6 month old just diagnosed. Guest guest
Great suggestion! If anyone out there has a local ortho that wants to learn the necessary principles of ET and how to properly apply a series of Mehta specialized EDF casts, please email me their contact details at isop06@... and I’ll add them to the invitee list. Guest guest
If you want to expedite things at Shriners in Philly, contact Janet Cerrone at janetcerrone@... or 1-800-281-4050. Your local Shriners group might be able to assist with travel costs. If you google them, you should be able to find a temple (that's what they are called) in your area.
