Hey !We casted our son at 9 months old. He started off at 45 degrees and as of post #9 he was 9 degrees out of cast. We just took off #11 and go for #12 early february. Logan is now 2 and doing fantastic. Logan learned to crawl and walk in the cast and never ceases to amaze us what he can do in the cast! Good luck on everything and your lil one! Hello all! I'm thrilled to join this group. I am in major need of some support and advice from others! My daughter Emma is now 4 months old. When she was 2 months we took her to the pediatrician after realizing she always leaned over to the right side, so much so that she has deep wrinkles on the right side of her torso. We got an xray right away which confirmed infantile scoliosis with a 37 degree curve. We have been seeing ortho specialist at AI Dupont in WIlmington, DE. Due to her young age, they have her wearing a brace. She's now had it for three weeks. Just as she was getting adjusted to wearing it (during sleep and naps as prescribed) she now has some skin irritation and is instructed to not wear it until it clears. As days pass, I feel like I'm wasting

valuable time! Monday

we go for a follow up xray and appointment at Dupont. And Friday we are going to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) for a second opinion. This is all very new to us and very overwhelming. I just want to make sure we are comfortable with our plan and that we are on the right track. I obviously just want the absolute best for my little girl! I know it's going to be long road ahead! It seems many parents in this support group are advocates of the casting. I approached our doctor at AI Dupont as to why Emma is in a brace and not a cast. He said it's mostly due to her young age. Has anyone else had their little on in a brace at such a young age and then moved onto the casting? On the flip side, has anyone had their little one in a cast as young as 4 months of age? I'm open to ANY advice or words of encouragement! Emma is also receiving physical therapy and we are very fortunate that she has no other

underlying issues. However, a MRI awaits her at 6 months of age to confirm there aren't any neurological concerns.Thank you in advance. Looking forward to talking with you all!

Thank you for the encouraging reply! Its amazing to hear Logan's progress!! its also encouraging to hear he's learned to crawl, walk, etc with the cast! So in those tough moments, know that his story encourages others to keep moving forward! These are long journeys for us all but when we look back some day, a few yrs is just a quick flash in time and its worth every bit of effort! Thanks again. Stay in touch. Hi , my son was casted the first time at six months, his initial curve was 29 degrees with RVAD of 17. We got excellent results from the cast. He is now ten months old and we only had to have two casts. We were told he curve was less than 10 degrees so we just went to brace. We are going to follow up next month to make sure brace is keeping the same. So, my advice is CAST NOW, the earlier the better.FrancesSent from my Verizon Wireless Phone----- Reply message -----From: " Ford " <suz0826@...> " infantile scoliosis treatment " <infantile scoliosis treatment >Subject: Introduction, Emma 4 months oldDate: Sat, Jan 28, 2012 7:48 pm Hello all! Hi ,

We saw Dr. C at CHOP – he pioneered

the VEPTR method. He told me my daughter was a candidate for casting and

that I should take her to Philadelphia Shriners. He also observed that

once he cuts a patient open for rods or VEPTR, they may do fine but their body

is never the same. It was so valuable to hear a doctor tell me to go

somewhere else for treatment!

It is amazing how many top-rated children’s

hospitals are in the Philadelphia area. But being so close to each other, I guess they don’t

want to invest money in developing the same department at multiple hospitals

unless the ailment is very common. My daughter was seeing a brachial

plexus injury specialist at CHOP but he left for Cincinnati. CHOP didn’t

replace him. We moved to Shriners whose BPI specialist is one of the top

three in the country.

Best wishes,

Sherry

you in advance. Looking forward to talking with you all!

May I recommend a couple of things to help get you started on Emmas infantile scoli journey? Please go to the Resource page of www.infantilescoliosis.org to dwld/read the published, medical journal titled “Growth as a corrective force in the Early Treatment of progressive infantile scoliosis,” by Mehta, MD, FRCS. Another valuable tool is to view A New Direction DVD which can be found in the Youtube portion of the site (in 3 parts). These 2 items along with the info/experience on CAST will help you to better understand this gentle & corrective treatment modality. Early Treatment w/ Mehta’s specialized EDF (elongation, derotation, flexion) casting has the ability to correct young spines, gently and permanently. There are no published medical journals on the effectiveness of bracing for progressive infantile scoliosis. Perhaps, lil Emma is being braced due to her young age and will soon transition into a series of properly applied EDf casts? Please keep the questions coming and let us know if we can help.HRH From: infantile scoliosis treatment [mailto:infantile scoliosis treatment ] On Behalf Of FordSent: Saturday, January 28, 2012 6:49 PMinfantile scoliosis treatment Subject: Introduction, Emma 4 months old Hello all!
