Guest guest
Bess,I found Kylie to eat much less in cast, and after the first few days of the first cast, she ate all day long but just a couple of bites here and there. She is now in cast number three and seems to eat more in one sitting. The sedation definitely can have an impact for the first few days. Kylie also got a cold immediately after the first cast. (Cast related who knows? Hospitals have lots of germs floating) If he has favourites, offer him those in small bits, see if that helps.Hope that helps! On 2011-12-07, at 1:38 PM, bessrattray@... wrote: Hi All, My son got his first cast on Monday afternoon. While he's adjusting well, he isn't eating like normal. No appetite, and the worst gas and burps I've ever seen (make that "eve heard" ;-). It's possible he's just a bit under the weather. Or could it be from the constriction of his mid-section? Or could it be from the sedation? THANKS, you guys! Bess in Nova Scotia PS: before casting, his standing X-ray showed a 60 degree curve; and his first in-cast X-ray showed a 21 degree curve. We're encouraged that his spine is apparently very flexible. Guest guest
I would guess a combination of multiple things. I know the sedation can make them gassy as their organs wake back up. The pressure can also cause it. That said, I know there has been a tummy virus going around that comes with bad acid-like burps, so I'd just keep a close eye on him and maybe feed him little bits more often and a more bland diet. Hope that helps. Jane From: "bessrattray@..." <bessrny@...>infantile scoliosis treatment Sent: Wednesday, December 7, 2011 10:38 AMSubject: Digestion problems, post-casting? Guest guest
With that much correction his body may still be adjusting. Some casts burps the entire cast - usually when eating and some casts he doesn't. I actually wrote a note to his preschool teacher so she would know he wasn't just rude! He's a grazer and snacks throughout the day in cast. Congrats on the progress! T Sent from my iPhone On Dec 7, 2011, at 12:38 PM, " bessrattray@... Guest guest
Thanks so much, you guys! This is re-assuring. I was worried, you know, his stomach was being . . . crushed or something scary. I'm definitely watching him like a hawk (he is delayed, growth-wise, as it is) -- and will try small meals, more often. > > Hi All, > > My son got his first cast on Monday afternoon. > > While he's adjusting well, he isn't eating like normal.
