Guest guest
Kristi,Congrats on such wonderful results, and thanks for a very timely post! Our Dr. was open to a brace after this cast (she's at 15 degrees IN cast (see my last post) but I said no, it's cold outside (we're in Ontario, Canada) there is NO reason to not try casting again.I am curious when Sierra's out of cast xrays are taken? Same day cast comes off? Few days later? I'm trying to limit Kylie's x-rays but since casting, she has only had IN CAST x-rays and Dr. C and I are both open to out of cast x-rays to get a baseline. Kylie will be 3 in March, and I'd like to wait until at least spring to consider a brace.Becky (Mom to Kylie age 33 months, was 49 degrees, now down to 15 in cast #3) On 2011-12-05, at 11:20 AM, Kristi wrote: Hello! This just did not feel right to me and my Husband so we scheduled a conference call after the Sept. #8 casting and told him we wanted to keep casting and not go to a brace. So, now we go back in March 2012 and either do cast #10 or get fitted for a brace depending on OUT of cast measurements!!! We are extremely Happy! Guest guest
Hey Becky! Dr. K now lets us cut Sierra’s cast off at home the day before....So Dr. K wants her spine to relax over night so he can get a better idea of where she is OUT of cast! I was concerned about the exposure to X-ray’s also, but from what I have read and my Husband’s uncle owns several MRI clinics in the South East....he said that the radiation exposure is so minimum that it is not really harmful especially compared to what the infantile scoliosis can do to our babies! Sierra is skinny pheno type..she has a very stiff spine. I figure that could help us in the long run if we can get her OUT of cast measurements down as low as possible. Maybe her spine will stay in the OUT of cast measurements as she grows as long as we brace. Dr. K wants to do the Night time Providence brace which is more for juvenile at night growth! UGH.....Dr. K was trained by Dr. Mehta...but, he does vary on the brace. Back in Sept. he said Sierra would probably be in a brace at least until puberty but now he is saying she might only have to wear it a year and could grow out of the scoliosis b/c we got such great correction this past time. Dr. K is really pushing and being aggressive with this 9th cast, but Sierra is doing great! I’m on FB under Kristi Strickland ...it is a profile pic of me and Sierra. I also have her X-ray pic’s on there! I would cast as long as possible...like I said this is Sierra 9th cast and we may do #10 if it will get her down even lower. I would like her to be at a big fat ZERO out of cast....lol! before bracing! Dr. K also says there is a 3-4 degree error of margin either way...so it is hard to say! At least Dr. K will agree to work with us on the issue to keep casting! Talk Soon! Kristi...my cell is 251-228-0431 if you ever want to talk..we have been casting for a long time! Guest guest
Kristi,Thanks for the quick reply! We usually have a few days off between casts, and our Doc is definitely willing to let us xray at home as long as we go to an x ray lab where they can give him the results electronically. I have held off until now because she was obviously not even close to 10 just to look at her back, and I figured we don't need those numbers until she's getting down a bit more. Gives me some things to think about. Maybe an x ray after the next cast because I am pretty sure we will do a minimum of two more casts. I haven't even thought about bracing and which I would like to push for. I won't worry about that until after the holidays. Thank God for this list where information is quite readily available! On 2011-12-05, at 12:18 PM, Kristi wrote: Hey Becky! Guest guest
Your Welcome....No worries right now..enjoy the Holidays..atleast you know you are on the right path to correction for your child! My main goal has been to avoid any type of invasive back surgery..growing rods, spinal fusion ect. I will do as many Cast as it takes. Sierra is so use to the cast and so are we. We will continue untill I feel we can go no more...I do not want to look back a year or 2 from now and say...Man, I wish we would have kept casting or I maybe we should have kept casting!!! Take Care & Happy Holidays! Kristi...P.S. Just looking at Sierra’s back...it looks perfectly straight..I even have a pic of her touching her toes...it is amazing..I will try and post some pic’s...look on my FB if you can!
