Guest guest
Hey Tasha -- Well if he is constipated, that could lead to bloating of course. Here is what we have experienced with eating and full tummies in a brace. I usually loosen Lexi's brace before meals and of course if I take it off after, it won't go back on as tight until her tummy has gone down from eating. Of course we don't have constipation with her, but it could lead to the same scenario. If you can get it on him, even loosely, that is better than not having it on at all. As long as it loose an not causing him pain, try to keep it on if you can. It is possible he has grown some and could ned a minor adjustment, but if he seems constipated and did have a full meal, that could be the culprit. In the mornings, I take Lexi's brace off first thing for a 30 min break. She eats breakfast and then even 30 min after her breakfast the brace won't go back on as tight as normally. This is normal after meals. Leave the brace off for awhile if he will be up and try to get his tummy issue dealt with if you can, then if not and it is time to go to bed, try to put it on loosely like I mentioned. As far as remedies, I can't help ya there, but sure someone will chime in with advice on that. I can tell you my neighbor has found Metamucil for children? Or maybe you can give them a small dosage. Anyway - her Dr. put her son on it at a year old because they were having MAJOR issues. Apparently, it has worked like a charm on him. I wouldn't use it though unless your doc gives the OK. Call your orthotist too and maybe take him in for a brace check. Remember - you are a clinician too now looking for signs that the brace may need to be checked! :-) Call me anytime too if you ever have a question. GOOD LUCK! Tracey Brace question Hi everyone, I need some help this evening. After dinner started complaining about his tummy hurting. He did have a full dinner and we are battling constipation. I did take it off after dinner for 30 minutes because he was acting like he needed to go. I was hoping by taking it off that might help. Well 30 minutes passed(still has not gone) and I can barely get it back on. It is SO tight!!! When I put it back where it should go, he cries it is too tight. Could it already need adjusting? Could he have grown? Thursday will be 1 month since he started wearing the brace. Or is it just that he is constipated and full? I just don't see how he will even sleep tonight. Any thoughts? Thanks so much, Tasha Oh I almost forgot also any helpful hints with constipation? We just started using MiraLAX after Fibersure and MOM did not work very well. He had this problem when he was little. It went away once he was in the cast. And now it is back. It is so hard to see him in pain like this. Guest guest
I can't speak to the brace issue, as we are still in a cast, but my older son had a ton of " poop problems " and Miralax worked great. Give it a few days and it should get him going and then regulate him. Continue to give it to keep the stool soft. It should keep him regular. I am telling you it worked wonders for us. It is tasteless. Mix it with anything. You can lessen the amount you mix with the liquid as time goes by. (we used less than indicated) Good luck and let me know if it works for you. Guest guest
Ditto.... My daughter uses Mirilax every day and we were having issues w/her and constipation. It took about 2 weeks to work and is doing great now. Evan has had some issues prior to casting and once in a brace as well. I loosen his brace after meals when I change his diaper, it seems to help. I would think that the brace wouldn't already need adjustments, but it might, it may have needed it from the beginning and now is just showing that it needs to be adjusted. Good luck. I know it's hard... Hope he sleeps tonight, his tummy should go down after a while. If he doesn't go to the bathroom, our ped told us to " stimulate " his bottom w/a thermomoter, etc to help him feel the sensation to " GO " . Sounds gross, but sometimes works in hard times. and Evan jill wienke wrote: I can't speak to the brace issue, as we are still in a cast, but my older son had a ton of " poop problems " and Miralax worked great. Guest guest
Hi Tracey, I almost called you.............I did get the brace back on and we had no choice, but to loosen it. It was the top strap that was killing him. He never had a bowel movement so at bedtime I still couldn't get it back to the correct spot. We felt like you.........its better than nothing on at all. I plan to call his orthotist tomorrow morning. Thanks Tracey. How is Lexi? Tasha Tracey wrote: Hey Tasha -- Well if he is constipated, that could lead to bloating of course. Guest guest
Jill, Thanks so much. The pharmacist said to give it a few days. This is day 2 so hopefully by tomorrow it will start working. really doesn't drink much of anything, but water. Have you ever put it in water? I have been able to get him to drink it in OJ. Tasha Fontenot wrote: Hi everyone, I need some help this evening. Guest guest
Thanks . Oh I wish! has had this problem since he was a baby. He eats fruits of every kind at every meal and snack. And eats lots of apples and pears. I wish fruit helped, but it just doesn't seem to be enough for him. I would LOVE to find a natural way to make it go away, but I can't see him in this pain anymore. He cries because he needs to go and then holds it back because it hurts. It literally went away for over a year and then out of no where it is back. I would rather him have diarrhea then for him to have to go through this. Tasha wrote: Have you tried apple or pear juice? These are natural stimulants and may help. Guest guest
I think you should also consider food allergies. If the fruit doesn't help and he's getting plenty of water, you may be looking at a dairy allergy causing the constipation. I would take out all dairy for a couple weeks - it will take at least 7-10 days to fully get out of his system. Also, make sure he's getting lots of unprocessed complex carbohydrates - oatmeal for breakfast, brown rice, sprouted wheat bread, quinoa - and lots of veggies (cucumber is great, for example, baked sweet potatoes instead of regular potatoes, etc.) Sometimes diet isn't the answer, and I don't want it to sound like I'm blaming you - I certainly don't. But, for chronic constipation like this, it is often a dietary thing, which leads to the constipation, which then leads to voluntary withholding because it's painful - which starts the vicious cycle again. Guest guest
Sandi, Thanks so much for all the helpful hints. I would think food allergies too, but for over a year we didn't have this problem. And believe me he ate whatever. Lots of good foods, but bad too. He was in a cast at the time.........that is what is so weird to me, This started right before he went into the brace. Which was about a month ago. My boys eat pretty healthy for the most part. has never really enjoyed milk. Even as a baby we were concerned because he just wouldn't take a bottle. Water is about the only thing he drinks. So I have no idea what has made this come back. He likes most all fruits and vegetables. And LOVES cucumbers. There are some things I could cut out........I really appreciate you bringing that to mind. Because we have been through this before and it went away I truly had not thought about some of the foods he eats. And I am to blame.........how else would he eat, but I didn't think you were bashing me. Again thanks for the help. Tasha " *\\o/* San *\\o/* " wrote: I think you should also consider food allergies. Guest guest
Well, I guess what I'm saying is - you're not to blame if it's a food allergy and I don't think you're feeding him fries and nuggets all day long . That's true about it going away and coming back, too. Jack has had so many digestive issues - even moreso than my four older daughters who are just slightly milk-sensitive. Jack had terrible reflux with projectile vomiting, exacerbated by my consumption of dairy (and it passing through breastmilk). I can have dairy again, but he still can't have any. So, that's what usually comes to mind when I hear of digestive things. However, with the curve in his back (Jack started at 70 - we were told - and now is at 55 in his first cast, back up from 38) I think that really puts a lot of pressure on the intestines and I bet has a huge influence on the kiddos having digestive issues. Jack still doesn't really eat many solids at all, so I wonder if we'll face more of this as he gets older. Best to you, Sandi

Guest guest
I forgot to mention corn syrup too. Just add a tsp to a drink and it serves as a stimulant also. Hope he feels better soon.
