Hi and welcome to the group.I started casting my son Noah just 2 months prior to his 4th birthday. He has an S-curve that measured 46/42 with a 25 degree spine rotation. Since casting, we have him down to 42/36 with a 16 degree rotation out of cast, in cast he is down to 16/13 on the curves. We took a 2 month break over the summer and will do so again this year but it has been working for us, treated here at Boston Children's hospital...There are some others moms with kids the same age and I'm sure they'll support casting at this age...Keep us posted!Leigh From: Shana <shaynab97@...> "infantile scoliosis treatment " <infantile scoliosis treatment > Sent: Saturday, January 14, 2012 3:21 AM Subject: Re: Any one start cast a 4 years old?

HiWe will be doing our first casting this month with our 5 year old who has a 58 degree curve right now. We are wondering the same thing and were told by the doctor at Shriners they don't have a lot of cases starting at this age to compare to, but believe casting is the best way to go right now. We have a sleep study tomorrow for her and if all goes well we will be casting at the end of the month closer to home at children's hospital in DC. I'll keep you posted though.Take careShanaSent from my iPodOn Jan 13, 2012, at 10:18 PM, H <christinehrph@...> wrote:

Hi Shana,

My son Jaylin is (as he would put, 4 an 3/4 :) ) this is first cast and got it Dec 23, 2011 and his curve was 34 and in cast he is down to 13 :), I totally recommend. I wish we would of known when he was younger, we would of started then. Its a lot of work, but so worth it.

Thanks guys

The group has grown i am an old member 1st child Adan casted 2004 thru 2007

The problem is Adan (1st son) was in a cast (shriners UTAH and Erie) from almost

3 to 5 and now brace free, my preschool PT teacher of my daughter told me she

is not level in her shoulders and wants me to get a scoli check, i don't fell a

curve but DONT want to go thru this again and wish if she does have a curve

casting can work for her at 4 plus years old. after the xray ill post again we

are going to get a check at children's boston and Adan recheck at boston

Childrens Boston told me she looked good when we checked her at 9 months and I

thought we were free from another child having this. and Im not sure she does

yet but her shoulders are not even and she favors use of her legs on one side

....so the PT at school said I dont see it but i will check it.

Really bummed,

Thanks for getting back to me

Yes. My son turned 4 a couple of days before his first cast. We go at the end of

the month for cast #7. He has an s curve and started at 45 top 50 bottom. He's

now in low 20's in cast. I'm hoping to stay in a cast for another year. (the 1

yr mark is Feb 3)

I think it's worth a shot. I see more and more older kids beginning the process. Word of warning be prepared mentally and take a stroller if you have one - a wagon if you don't. My son couldn't really walk the first day. He woke up another child on the second day and was off and running. Because he received good correction on cast 1 and his body was repositioned so much he was sore and couldn't put a lot of weight on his legs. When he did walk it was baby steps and not far. We laid on lots a pillows and watched movies and uhhhhh ate junk food:) Now when he gets a new cast he is generally up and running, riding a bike, and climbing on the swingset by late evening. I kid you not.... It's crazy how fast they recover. I'm like you - it's the best option even at an older age.Good luck!TameSent from my iPadOn Jan 14, 2012, at 2:21 AM, Shana <shaynab97@...> wrote:

Hi!

We started casting at age 3.5 and my daughter is almost 5. We have had a longer,

bumpier road than most, but we have other medical issues going on as well. I

think casting at any age is an option as long as one realizes it's not a fast

process..it will be a long road ahead. But that is the same for a brace or

surgery. My one suggestion would be make sure you are at a center you feel

comfortable with for the long haul and a doctor you have a good relationship

with who has the same values you do, and understands the Metha process.

We have had good luck not using Versed(makes them drowsy before the actual

anestheia is given), it makes my daughter cranky. We have also INSISTED on being

brought back to recovery before she wakes up, and the nurses have always been

good about this. Makes a world of difference in my daughters behavior.

good luck!!
