Guest guest
My son, Liam, is due to have his first cast applied on February 28th. He has an ASD among other `unrelated' issues. We are arriving early on the 27th to have the Anesthesiologist take a look at him and possibly perform a sleep study. If all checks out alright, he will be casted on the 28th. Back in December, we submitted all of Liam's diagnoses and film to the Mehta trained doctor, while in contact with one of the hospital's care coordinators, and touched upon all issues including the ASD. They requested a copy of our local Cardiologist's records and asked several questions. I truly feel they are taking all the precautions necessary before applying the cast. As a concerned parent, I was also worried about holding off on casting. I was assured that if casting was not an option at this time, bracing would be a good alternative to at least hold the curve and prevent it from worsening. Again, I feel confident in the information I have received that they will do what they feel is the best for my son under the circumstances. Guest guest
Hello! My name is and my son Timmy has been casted since May of 2010. He was born with a heart defect that has been corrected twice by surgery with more to come later in life. His cardiologist had no problem with casting, and Timmy does well with it. He is a very active 4 year old and the cast or heart doesn't slow him down. Hopefully this helps! Curious what the protocol is with Metha casting and heart defects? I am hearing from a lot of moms that the Metha casting is too restrictive on the heart and lungs? But bracing is OK? Anyone casting with a heart defect? Thank you in advance : )
Guest guest
Thanks , it does! I'm connected with a few heart moms who's kids have pretty bad curves, they've been told they can't cast b/c it will put too much pressure on the heart and lungs but told surgery is too risky, they are in limbo with no treatment options...what kind of defects does your son have? my son has tga/vsd/asd/pda but he's not casting, his sister is! LOL can I email you? -Ami > > Hello! > > > > ________________________________ > From: luckyvtmama <amibeautinet@...> > infantile scoliosis treatment > Sent: Saturday, February 18, 2012 3:09 PM > Subject: Anyone casting with a heart defect? > > > >  > > Curious what the protocol is with Metha casting and heart defects? Guest guest
It depends on what type of heart issue, but its my understanding that a properly applied Mehta cast with the crucial, widely trimmed, mushroom shaped window in front will allow the child to take big, full proper breaths and shouldn’t effect lung/heart function. We call this the chest expansion window. This window also reduces the risk of chest wall deformity.HRH From: infantile scoliosis treatment [mailto:infantile scoliosis treatment ] On Behalf Of luckyvtmamaSent: Saturday, February 18, 2012 3:10 PMinfantile scoliosis treatment Subject: Anyone casting with a heart defect?
