No, it doesn’t go over the

shoulder. That choice depends on the location of the curve (higher up). I

conclude my daughter’s curve is stiff and responds slowly. But this is a

guess. We really don’t have a clue.

My sons cast goes over the shoulder. From what I've read that is

important for higher curves. I do not know the exact vertebrae involved

but his curve is between/right below his shoulder blades. He is in cast 2

right now & oh he looked so skinny when we took off that first one! I

actually didn't like it as much as I thought I would as I thought I was

going to break him when I picked him up :( My son before casting was

skinny (as his dad was as a boy) & was a picky eater. We were pleased to

find out he had actually gained 4 lbs while wearing that first cast. I

believe that forcing his spine to straighten out took pressure of his

stomach somehow because my baby is now an eater! He eats everything in

sight & actually asks for food now. However he still looks skinny. The

dietitian at SLC suggested adding powdered milk to his chocolate whole

vit. D milk or yogurt & putting cheese on anything. I think I saw once

something in the resources section of ISOP website with calorie booster

ideas. I make sure that Levi gets a healthy variety of foods but I'm not

afraid once he's ate those to dish out the high calorie goodies to make

sure he's getting enough.

Amber

ps. Levi is also very active...so active that when we asked about PT while

in cast to maintain muscles & activity level the PA laughed & said that he

strongly believes in PT but in our case it would be a waist of our time &

money... so I hear you!

Hi ,

At what age was first treated w/ a properly applied series of Mehta

casts?

Even if Mehtas specialized edf casting does not completely cure ,

correction and maintenance via this method is a superior plan. I know

from first hand experience with my own daughter that even children with

severe curves treated late, the benefits are GREAT. Try and think of how

far he would have progressed without it, to try and help keep things in

perspective. Its helping his alignment, its reducing the cosmetic

deformity (which will be very important to him in a few years) and its

buying growth time.

Please keep us posted upon your return and continue knowing that you are

doing the right thing. And~ are in great hands.
