I'm sorry I cant answer questions about older children as my son is just

turning two but we are also from Nebraska getting treatment at SLC. Oh

they are wonderful there you are in good hands I was wondering where you

were getting treatment in Omaha? We lucked out and Dr. H at children's

sent us to SLC after a 2 & 1/2 mos watch and wait Levi was casted at 19

mos.

HiMy daughter is 5 and just had her first cast put on about a month ago. I was just as nervous and worried about her being older and not knowing what to expect. The doctors were very optimistic as well even though they tended to begin the process of casting much younger . Talia was at a 60 degree angle with a very flexible spine, they said her flexible spine was the reason it had gone unnoticed. After this first cast she went down to a 28degree curve. The doctors were very pleased and are keeping her in it for longer than they originally thought bc it went so well. I had been nervous about how she would react to being in the cast and she had said once that she thought she would look funny and the kids would laugh but that was the last she ever mentioned it. The only problem we have come across is the occasional smell and itching.I have learned through her that kids truly are much more resilient and forgiving than us adults. As soon as she was awake and walking she was loving her cast pretending to be walking down the runway modeling it. I don't know your sons personality but if you talk him through everything and don't make it as big of a deal as it really is to you, he may just surprise you. Good luck and stay strong, I learned our kids get their cues from us so be sure to give them positive ones!ShanaSent from my iPodOn Feb 21, 2012, at 1:07 PM, "stenj82" <stenj82@...> wrote:

Hi Shana :) which hospital do you go to? My son just turned 5 and he has been in a cast for 1 year. I am looking into getting a second opinion for future care and need a doctor who has experience w older children and syndromatic children. We cannot afford to mess around w another doctor that isn't suited to our sonsindividual needs! Thanks:)TameSent from my iPhoneOn Feb 21, 2012, at 7:31 PM, Shana <shaynab97@...> wrote:

hi there! my daughter will be 5 the end of March and we've been casting since

3.5. She's a sensitive girl so I think has a harder time with it then most, and

is looking foward to a brace break, but we will be casting at least on and off

for years to come. It's been holding her curve really well. Too soon to tell if

we've achieved any permanant correction, I do know there's been improvement in

rotation and her lower curve though. We knew it was going to be a long-term

process when we started and I think to go the distance we have decided to brace

in the summer, cast in the winter...slow and steady wins the race!

For us, it beats out surgery any day, when my daughter's much older she might

decide otherwise but till then we are happy with casting.

We first took our son to Boys Town, and we were referred to the Nebraska Spine

Center. I am grateful to our doctor there that he was not eager to jump and do

surgery, but I wish that he would have known other options. I am going to have

Shriners send his records to Nebraska just in hopes that the doctor there will

look into this other option!! I wish we would have gone through Childrens.

Another of my sons had his tonsils and adnoids out at Childrens and we

absolutely loved it. We were only in Nebraska for dental school, so we are now

back in Salt Lake, but I am hoping to keep in contact with his doctors there so

that they can either learn this casting method, or let other parents know of

this option before it's too late!

I am glad to hear that they are making progress with your daughter!! That's

great! I am optimistic with my son because they told me the same things about

his back being very flexible. His doctor at Shriners told him that he was going

to get a Ninja Turtle shell, so he is thrilled. He has been very very adaptable

to different things he has had in the past, so I am hopeful that this will go

smoothly. Thanks for letting me know that your daughters cast is working. One

of my biggest fears is that he is too old and that we waited too long.

Ami,

Thanks for your reply. Aidan's doctors didn't really say how long of a process

they expect it to be, but I am telling myself to be prepared for years, just

because his curve is starting at 90 with major rotation. His doctors at

Shriners told him that he was getting a Ninja Turtle shell, so for right now he

is excited. I am hoping for good things, so some relief for him. Because his

curve is so severe he is exhausted a lot of the time from trying to do everyday

tasks, so I am hoping this will help. I am nervous, but looking forward to some

results and very very hopeful that this will at least delay surgery!! Like you

said, anything beats surgery, at least until he is older!!

I'm very surprised that they didn't send you to children's. Dr. H there

does do casting but he doesn't have the latest table & only uses fiber

glass not pop. That is why we travel to SLC for treatment instead of

children's. You will love them at SLC my son responds so well to the doc &

pa it is such a relief. Your son is now in the most capable hands in my

opinion. Best of luck! It is fantastic that you send the information

back....if they ever do get interested ISOP puts on training.

My daughter Liv (Olivia) had curves at 100 by age 2 and is alive today due the care (repeated casts & halo) she received in SLC. Aidan couldn’t be in better hands. Good luck on March 23rd. That’s fabulous!  I agree 100% about our kiddos being so resilient and taking their cues from us.  Im glad they will continue to cast her and that she is experiencing such good results..Not only physically, but emotionally as well.  Great post.HRH From: infantile scoliosis treatment [mailto:infantile scoliosis treatment ] On Behalf Of ShanaSent: Tuesday, February 21, 2012 6:31 PMinfantile scoliosis treatment Subject: Re: New here.....anyone have an older child going through casting? Absolutely. I think an important thing to focus on now is correcting what you can with EDF/Mehta casting and also buying valuable growth time for his thorax prior to any surgery…It will be a long road, but worth every minute of it.Just my 2 cents.HRH From: infantile scoliosis treatment [mailto:infantile scoliosis treatment ] On Behalf Of stenj82Sent: Wednesday, February 22, 2012 8:46 AMinfantile scoliosis treatment Subject: Re: New here.....anyone have an older child going through casting? I just want to second what others are saying about SLC: It IS the best! We will be down there again just a few days before you guys. They really take care of you. Honestly, if it wasn't so stressful agonizing over our daughter's health, it would almost be like a vacation. ☺ So sorry you have to go through this ordeal, but I'm so glad you are finally getting good care! Don't give up hope!

Casting definitely beats any alternative. Children really are resilient. You can be creative in finding the best approach for your child.

Hello-Just wanted to give you a few words of encouragement as you begin your a casting journey. My son was casted last October for the first time. He was 7 and turned 8 in November. He was 35 degrees and the doc got him to a 17 in cast. His pediatrician found his at his pre-kindergarten checkup. He has done better emotionally than I could of EVER expected. I hope physically too!! We actually go in for a checkup tomorrow. He has been in the same cast since October and will be up for a new cast in the next month or so. The first week or two is tough. Soon he will learn how to move so that he can do everything that he wants to do. does everything he did before- minus swimming and long baths!! He rides

bikes, jumps and flips on furniture, and drives a go kart. Your son will do great!!! Feel free to message me anytime!! Hi,Welcome!!!I'm Joy ( Jaylins mom) jaylin just turned 5 this February :) Aiden will do great, it did take jaylin a couple of days to be able to move around and figure out how to pick things off the floor. But as the days went by he started to do most things like before. Of course he couldn't do his swimming or baths, but he understands it's for the best. Now what I ran into with Jaylins cast is with it being under his arms he can not wipe himself :( jaylin got his first cast this past dec 23,2011 and we've had to talk to his preschool teachers to make sure they could help him in the restrooms, we was very lucky that they said not a problem. At his age the policy is hands off and only direct them in the right direction but not touching. But after all that, jaylin was embarrass for his teachers to help him and I found out he would hold it unroll I showed up for him :( not good! So! I did a little research and guess what I found :) its a tool to help himself to wipe his bottom :) its called "bottom buddy" I'm not kidding either :) he has been learning how to use it and he's getting better every time :) its been so hard to go through this with him because you work so hard to potty train your child then all of sudden, he can't do it anymore. Now he can :):):)I just wanted to let you and anyone know this just incase this happens to you. Before casting 34, after casting 13!! We are to go back march 27!Good luck and keep asking questions, this website has been my blessing. Thank you everyone, and thank you heather we love you!!!Live, laugh, and loveJoyOn Feb 22, 2012, at 5:26 PM, Mock <rjnmock@...> wrote:

Soon he will learn how to move so that he can do everything that he wants to do. does everything he did before- minus swimming and long baths!! He rides

bikes, jumps and flips on furniture, and drives a go kart. Your son will do great!!! Feel free to message me anytime!! We are new to this board. Our son Aidan is 6.5 years old. He was diagnosed with scoliosis when he was only 2.5, but for the last 4 years we have been told by numerous doctors to "watch it and wait", and then we were told that we were just going to try and put off surgery as long as possible because there were no other options. His curve has progressively gotten worse. It is currently at 90 degrees with a lot of rotation (although I'm not sure the numbers). We recently moved from Omaha to Utah and we were referred to Shriners in Salt Lake. Aidan was set to get his first cast February 15th, but was sick so he is now set to get his cast March 23rd. We are nervous, but excited at the prospect of avoiding surgery, at least for a while. I was wondering if anyone has an older child that has done the casts. His doctors at Shriners are very optimistic for him because he is still very very flexible. We are really hoping this will work for

him!!!
