Boyfriends son is doing the same, he's A* wanting to go to Guildford Uni, Uni's all have different incentives, Guildford is something like if you get so many A* they put £2000 in your bank, so that's his aim, plus its got great sports facilities and he is an awesome footballer. My girls are both hoping to go to Winchester Uni, to do Events Management, -Lee decided after 2 years of Accountancy that she didn't want to pursue her career in that field, Shannen came home from college yesterday with a distinction in Business management - im such a proud mummy.

15 year old Tom is working so very very hard, he is obsessed with revision, he seems to be coping well (+ girlfriend age 17 years of 11.5 months duration and a recent job) but man is it all stressing me out. I worry about him not really taking a break and then now he's got this maths revision Cd on which is awesome but I find math terms scarey she keeps talking about things to the power of 8, I never did get that, what I got was Ungr................

I'm in two minds about this business of target grades, they say don't stress over it but Tom's is 11 A* + 1 A, he's sure he can get 5 A* 1 B and the rest A's which would be awesome but all this stems from predicted grades - so is it good they set his target high?

Science teacher is really putting pressure on him to resit one of his ISA's because he ONLY got an A, I think that teacher should be spending his time worrying about the kids who are struggling instead of making Tom fret.

Based on CAT scores Tom's year is the brightest they have had in 3 years and will have in next 3 years, I know they want to zap the grammar schools out of the water in results like they used to.

BTW Tom says Revitapops help him concentrate, so do several of his friends

Dear Mandi

Boy I wish I was in your shoes... our school doesn't care about grades at all.. and bright kids end up so understimulated and undermotivated.. that they are bored out of their minds and go off the rails in frustration. My third has a high IQ and hyperflexible hands.. so poor writing.- school entered him at foundation level based on his writing!!!!! rather than what I have now arranged Higher level with additional time to compensate for his writing problems!

My reading of this is that Tom has set himself a goal.. It is a goal which he thinks he can achieve and is less than others believe he can do- Wow he is self motivated

The human brain has the most amazing capacity to absorb information. so if he is relaxed and is " turned on " by spending hours with maths stuff - he is in my world.. and it is a very calm and balanced place- Maths is logical and only black or white.

Does Tom know what he wants to do longer term? If science features in it, then my understanding is that as little as a grade B at GCSE is a predictor of A grades at A level with concerted effort.

Tom seems very level headed- and if he has an A at science already, with effort at this next set of exams he could still get and A*- I guess it is up to him.

At the end of the day, Tom has had a high aspiration school and will get results he can be proud of and you will know that you have given him access to good education that will set him up for life-

I have tearful periods when I look at the poor low aspiration school my kids have been through in Suffolk, knowing that their grades so under reflect their true ability and that it may have a huge anchoring effect on their future career options. It simply is too late to help any of mine succeed at their GCSEs.. and we do not appear to have any excellent upper schools here that are willing to put any effort into helping children achieve their potential.

I would be so grateful if any teacher had encouraged my kids to shine the diamond within them.

Lucky you

Tracey
