ok you are going to hate me.  As a tattooed, formally pierced mama - I have had my tongue, lip and belly button pierced. None are in today.  None have noticeable scars.  None were permanent.   think you should let her do it. The kid has had so much done to her, let her do something she wants to her body for a change.  It isn't permanent, she can take them out - in reality it is no worse than getting your ears done.  I wouldn't pay for it, and if they get infected I would have her sign a contract that she needs to pay for any medical bills from any infection she may get - because they do happen.

In terms of how they are done - they take a pair of sterilized medical tongs and pinch the skin.  Then take a hollow needle and shove it through the skin with no numbing of any kind.  - So yes - it hurts.

As a mom my policy with my boys is no tattoos before 18 because they are permanent.  Piercing are fine if they pay for them.  I don't think something reversible and that they pay for is worth the battle with a teenager.

Sorry! Jenn

Oh i remember when i did this to my mom. I had 23 piercing , seems crazy now. I now only have 7 of them left. My poor mom couldn't really do anything after i was 16 because that's the legal age for piercings in BC. Just always remember they can come out and eventually she won't want it anymore. So happy i did the piercing not tattoos, even though i have two of those too lol. Stay strong mom Good luck Sent from Samsung Mobile

A few years ago, my daughter (now almost 21), had her eyebrow pierced and also

her nose (not the middle, just the nostril where she wore a small stud). She

had also gotten the cartilage of her ear pierced a year or so before that.

She has already decided to remove all earrings, etc. and the holes have closed.

To be honest, my only concern was infection. Other than that, I figured let her

express herself. She's a great, strong young lady who now attends college,

never did drugs or anything like that.

My point is I figured I would pick my battles and since they weren't permanent,

it was a battle I decided not to take on.

My daughter also has two small tattoos. She was 19 when she got the first, 20

when she got the second, so I wouldn't have had much to say anyway. My only

concern in this case was that she realize that they are permanent, which

obviously she does.

- I'm not advising you one way or the other because it's a personal

thing, especially with a child this age. I know that Liv is also a

strong-minded, wonderful young lady. I do like what Jenn said that with all Liv

has gone through, letting her have control over her body in some respect might

be something to think about. Maybe you feel she is too young right now, but

perhaps down the road a bit.

,I had to laugh at this! With a 19 year old (with big holes in his ears and 10 tattoos!!) a 17 year old (who only has her ears pierced), a 15 year old son who thinks all of that is disgusting, and Kylie who is 3 and ne who is 1 who both have their ears pierced. I've had the whole range of interesting conversations and my rule was, if it's visible the answer is NO until you build a decent resume and your skill/experience speaks for itself. I pierced my belly and got a tattoo at age 33. For what, I have NO idea! No regrets, but I wouldn't do it again. Both however are hidden. I will tell you the belly piercing was more uncomfortable for laying during the recovery time but the actual piercing wasn't terrible. There are also plastic tubes that can go in place of the metal bars to keep the hole open in the event of MRI, CT scans or my case pregnancies! I hate the tattoos, and big gauges but in the grand scheme of things, I have an incredible kid with a big heart who does things for those in need so I could care less about the tough exterior on the outside.BeckyOn 2012-03-16, at 1:00 PM, Hyatt wrote:
