Can infants with scoliosis get worse during their adolescent grow spurt?

Hi All,

Another thing that's been bugging us with our talk with Dr. T is he seemed to

purposefully misunderstand us when we were trying to ask him if infants with

scoliosis can have progression of their curve when they hit their adolescent

growth spurt. He kept trying to say there were no studies on it as of yet. Do

any of you know if it's a valid concern? Because to us it only seemed to make

sense that the curve could progress during another time of growth. We're

concerned because our doctor doesn't want to do anything with iel even if

his curve gets a little worse in infancy as long as it remains below 50 degrees.

We're apprehensive because if his curve gets a little worse now and a little

worse later he could end up needing surgery when we feel if we cast if his spine

progresses while he's an infant we could avoid the situation all together. The

doc kept talking about him leading a " normal life " . That's our goal too, but I

think our opinion of how to get there is different than the doctors and it's

very annoying.

Thanks,

, mother of iel 5 months, 29 degrees.

Hi Cheistina,I agree with you and your husband about doing something now instead of waiting. My daughter was around 32 degrees when she was first casted at 9 1/2 months. She's now 3 years 3 months old and her back is as straight as can be. She's treatment free and has been for a year and a half. I think casting at the earliest age possible is key to treating and correcting the spine the most effectively. When they are that young they dont realize whats going on and adapt quickly. How long have you been waiting and watching? Maybe he just wants to see if his spine will progress or correct on his own. I'd want to cast tho. As for his spine curving again when he is older, I think everyone is different. I dont think casting has been around long enough yet for kids to have grown to their teen years. My daughters dr thinks she'll be fine but he'll still watch her until she's done with puberty. Hope this helps you out some. Feel free to ask more questions. - mother to 3 yrs 3 mths old - 2 casts, 1 brace - currently cured and treatment free for a yr and a half.Sent from my iPhoneOn Sep 10, 2011, at 2:41 AM, "torrieric" <torrieric@...> wrote:

Scoliosis can progress at every growth stage. We need to watch our kiddos

closely even if they are treated early & properly w/ edf casting.
