Hi there, :-) The description 'furry green hanging mold' sounds very much like what we often call 'ooglies here', which are yeast strands, often dangling from the scoby into the brew, furry, but not fuzzy and not like the mold that grows in round or circular patches. The Kombucha dangly things are definitely not fuzzy, rather furry-slimy and extremely common in brews and completely harmless. In fact, my best tasting brews seem to have a lot of those ooglies. You can see some in my brewing pictures here: http://www.therpc.force9.co.uk/family/scobygrow/Day1.html The Minstrel's Scoby Pages It is important to identify these things correctly, as you don't want to keep throwing away perfectly o.k. brews uglified with those yeasty danglies. Wonder how the story continues. Guest guest
moldy scoby? Anyone know why my scoby would keep molding, 3 ruined batches, like furry green hanging mold? i have not used any metal, and everything involved was steralized. what commonly causes mold?............ ->->->->->-> Further to Margret's answer. It does seem a wee bit odd to get mo(u)ld below and not above. Difficult, if not impossible. The hanging below suggests normal development, BUT GREEN(???) What are you brewing with? Mine are usually brown(ish) or variations on a theme of brown. I've only ever had one attack and there are photos of mould in " 's bits " in the photo section. As to what causes mould, there are spores in the air almost anywhere outside a sterile laboratory. Just leave a bit of cheese or fruit un-noticed and watch for it happen. N. England.
