a,

I know I already wrote to you on FB but thought I'd check in with you

again. They can trim it or flare it out on the bottom around the tail

bone. That being said I felt very much the same way that first night.

Levi didn't want to get up or move. He just laid next to me and watched

cartoons at the hotel. I thought for sure the next day they would trim

the cast but they told me it was perfect....to give him time. Honestly it

was just that first night/next morning that were that bad. I thought he

can't sit, roll over, get up, pick things up off the floor/play on the

floor....how are we going to do this? That didn't last but 3 days. By

two weeks he could do all but get up from a laying down position & by

three weeks it was full on back to " normal " . Don't get me wrong there are

little things that are hard now....like watching him struggle in the ball

pit at a birthday party or that he can't go to the bottom floor of the

children's museum because of the water tables...but nothing like that

first night. Remember he has to " relearn " how to do things again using

his leg muscles instead of the lower back. Try to hang in & remember that

even if things aren't perfect right now its better then the alternatives.

Hugs,

Amber

mommy to Levi

ps. use the moleskin " petals " to cover any of the rough areas esp by the

face. Levi now uses his cast to " scratch " his chin & the back of his

head...he's a funny kid.

Hi a,I'm on facebook as well (Becky Stuckless) and I've put up albums of Kylie's 1st, 2nd and 4th cast. I was just looking at the pictures from her first cast (last May) which was VERY hard the first almost 24 hours. I was overwhelmed at how big the cast looked on that first day but the pictures of day 2, the neck doesn't seem as high etc, I'm not sure if it's just the fact that she was up and moving as opposed to just lying or how much swelling there might have been (it didn't look like she was swollen the first day, but I did notice that she looked more "comfortable" on day 2.I think for them, it is very overwhelming to wake up with this big thing on (Kylie was 21.5 lbs before the first cast and woke up over 26 lbs, so that thing was HEAVY!). I couldn't believe how different she was when she woke up the next morning (we slept in hospital that first night). It took her another day or two to really figure out how to get around in the cast, but she figured out strategies (mind you she was 26 months old for her first cast) so she was an expert at getting around before the cast. I will also tell you that cast #2 was COMPLETELY different for us. She was up and walking with an hour of being in recovery and ready to go home within about 2 hours. (What a RELIEF!)My only suggestion is to cuddle him as much as you can, just letting him be reassured, and hopefully he will feel up to drinking/eating which will help with the recovery. We have only had to trim cast #1. (at the thighs because it was definitely just a bit low). Casts 2 - 4 we have just walked out of the hospital with no adjustments.BeckyOn 2012-01-13, at 5:36 PM, a wrote:

What are the " moleskin petals " ? Are we talking about just regular moleskin that

you get at the drug store and just wrapping it over the edge of the cast? We

get our first casting experience next Fri it looks like, and looking to make

sure we make things as comfortable for Brayden as possible.

We are on Facebook if anyone wants to connect with us there... Curt Dennis

Thanks!

Hi a,My son Jaylin turns 5 in February and he had his 1st cast dec. 23,2011 and I agree, it is so hard for everyone when they wake up from the casting. Jaylin just laid there in the bed with a scared look and couldn't move and all swollen from everything he just went through, the hardest thing for us was not to cry in front of him. We was up a lot that night and he was still laying around for most of the next day. We had to help him potty and we got a hold of Riley hospital and they told us after a few days to come up so they could look at him, they ended up trimmed the cast and jaylin could pee by himself again. We will have to take him again because he still can't wipe himself yet, his preschool teachers are helping him so jaylin can stay in school. Everything will get much better,It just takes time. It almost felt like we had a new born again :) probably about the first 3 days was the worst. Live, laugh, and loveJoyOn Jan 13, 2012, at 6:25 PM, Doug & Becky Reimneitz <dougandbecky@...> wrote:

Hey a! Just read your post! Sierra was 12 mo. on her 1st cast! Sierra has a short torso! The cast was way too long and was diging into her thighs, way too high under her arm pits and under her chin and we also had a bad pressure point digging into her stomach on one side! We were scared to death to and did not know what to do! The cast can be TRIMMED without affecting the integrity of the cast and what the Dr. is trying to do with the manipulation of your Son’s spine. We are on cast #9 and pretty much been through it all! The cast Tech.’s are very important. I know all of their names and always talk to them and bring in a prev. cast for them to go by before the next cast is applied. We DO NOT leave the Hospital until I am comfortable with all aspects of the cast. We live on the Gulf Coast of Alabama and travel up to Birmingham Alabama..about 4 1/2 hrs. to see Dr. K at Children’s Hospital (which is great) that we do not have to travel far! Dr. K was trained by Dr. Mehta..he is originally from Philadelphia. Anyway, No one down in this area has even heard of Infantile Scoliosis or Mehta casting so they will NOT trim or do anything with Sierra’s cast. My Husband can flare it out on the stomach area if it is putting to much pressure! Only Dr. K and his staff know how to trim properly! We do have the grey torso shirt under the cast and have never had any skin issues! They wrap her cast in a peach color water proof tape..and I always check for ruff edges....they send a roll home with us also! We do not use mole skin...we use Duct Tape all around the bottom edges to protect against accidents! We also tape around the area under her chin for food spills. I always keep a shirt on Sierra and sometime a plastic bib if it is something messy she is eating. Sierra does so well....she will be up running around by the afternoon after the cast is applied. We use the Pampers Cruisers thin max..they slide easier under the cast...we have used Velcro strips also to hold her pants up..but now the cast Tech.’s do a bell shape for us so Sierra has kinda some hips to hold them up! My husband with Dr. K’s permission cuts Sierra’s cast off the day before we go up and have next cast applied...stay away from that saw...he just cuts her cast off with tin snips in about 2 min. Your Son will get used to cast life and so will you...it is doable and worth every min. of it. The cast can be trimmed....We have to live with our cast at 3 mo. at a time! Hope this helps....If you want to contact me my cell is 251-228-0431 and I am on FB...Kristi Strickland ...Hang in there. Sierra does everything that her 4 year old Sister Summer does. She takes dance also!

Kristi Mommy to Sierra 34 degrees. 9th cast down to 9 degrees OUT of cast and –6 degrees IN cast. May go to 10th cast in March 2012 or Brace...depending on #’s!

a,

The first cast is the hardest. It will get better very soon. Your son will

adjust quickly. I know the cast seems to fit low and rise up high. I was so

concerned the first time, I took our sons to our local Ortho Dr. for a 2nd

opinion, but it was normal. Put his toys on a table to play or sometimes a bean

bag chair can help with sitting. They do adjust faster than the parents, just

give a few more days. You are giving your child an amazing gift. EDF Casting

cured my child and he now has no memory of any casts or bracing, just a straight

back:)

HI a

Although our son was casted at 23months old ( almost two months ago at Phili with Dr. C) Ihave a bit of hopefully helpful advice for you ( and others) both from a parent and Occupatioal Therapy professional backround- We used a husband cushion ( the kind people use to sit up in bed- a back and armrest attached) and lean it against the wall. Since it is soft, it has give and the child will be semi-upright which is good for eating ( a bit modified on the floor) and hopefully a bit more comfortable with the cast issue. With that, my creative husband, took a plastic storage container and cut out a U shape ( to make a "desk") so you can put toys, etc on it. We did a container before anything too permanent which was good because our son has been up and about and improving each day- We wish the same fore you!!!

We took pictures and wanted to post anyway for the group but I am happy to send to you ....

Thank you Kristi for taking the time to write me:) The first couple days really

do suck! It's sad but it was kind of a releif to come back to work today. He is

doing better but still can't sit and play or bend down to pick up things.

Thankfully we are only a hour or so from the hospital so we are going Friday

morning to get it " trimmed " . I couldn't be more happy. I just wish they would

have told me that we could have gotten this done before we left to come home. I

might just take you up on your offer and give you a call. Its nice to hear that

there really is light after this LONG tunnel. I will try the duct tape too

sounds like a good idea. They put the moleskin directly on his skin and it

looks like its starting to break out. Thanks agian for taking the time to write

me. a

Joy, Being 5 I am sure it was a lot harder. My little one can't talk yet so he

really is not sure what it going on. Sounds like Jaylin is getting used to

things and I hope he continues to do so. We are going to go this Friday and get

it trimmed which is such a releif for me. Thank you for your response.

I so really hope that a little bit more can come off. I tell you, as soon as jaylin gets his cast set enough for him to do what he needs to do, I am taking his picture and measure the cast so the next one that is put on, I can just hand them the measurement and say do it like this :)This casting can drive a person crazy!!!!The things we do for our babies :):):) ok so he is 5, not so much a baby anymore!Live, laugh, and loveJoyOn Jan 17, 2012, at 2:29 PM, "a" <minbrock13@...> wrote:

Joy, Being 5 I am sure it was a lot harder. My little one can't talk yet so he really is not sure what it going on. Sounds like Jaylin is getting used to things and I hope he continues to do so. We are going to go this Friday and get it trimmed which is such a releif for me. Thank you for your response.
