Hi ,

I just read this post and it got my attention. I believe we met once in SLC, but it was several years ago. Will you please help me with some questions?

As you probably already know started at 15 months and 60 degrees and was treated in SLC just like Noah. In October 2009 she was down to 10 degrees and taken out of her brace altogether. One year later in August 2010 she was down to 7 degrees after not having the brace for a year. Now, here we are in August 2011 and her curve looks like it is making a comeback. We are waiting to hear from Dr. D with her results.

Will you please let me know why Noah was kept in brace after acheiving numbers below 10 degrees? Also, you mention that he has a daytime and nighttime brace? What is the difference? only had one brace at a time, so I am curious about this as well. It is so wonderful to hear that Noah is doing so well. turns 6 in October, and Noah is 6. How does he handle wearing the brace and how many hours a day does he wear it?

Thank you so much,

Hi ,

We live in NW MT and started treatment at the Spokane Hospital in March 2006. We chose to transfer to SLC later that year as the Spokane did not do Mehta casting. We have had AMAZING results with EDF casting in SLC, and I would recommend anyone to go. Our little guy started casting at 80 degrees at 14 months old, and after a series of 9 cast and currently in our 6,7,8 (I don't remember) brace we are down to 2 degrees in the daytime brace and perfectly straight in the nighttime brace.

It is my understanding that Dr. C in Spokane has been given the opportunity to be trained for EDF casting and hasn't ever done it. From what we've heard he just doesn't have the time. I think it's great that you have an appt next week there, and I'm sure they'll request an MRI, if you haven't have one, to rule out any other issues. We have been so blessed with the SLC hospital and Dr. D there is Incredible!!! In my opinion, it should be something you concider for treatment, as he and (totally ) are the ones that have pushed for this treatment in the US.

I would love to help further, if I can just let me know :)

Best of luck to you and your sweet boy.

Hi All,My name is Torrieri and my son iel was just diagnosed with scoliosis, 40 degrees at 5 months old. We live in Spokane, WA and have an appointment with the Shriner's hospital here in Spokane on 07 Sep 2011. My husband and I have been doing as much research as possible and have decided we'd like to do the Mehta casting ASAP. Does anyone else in the group live in the Inland Northwest? When we asked the Shriner's here what type of casting they do, the woman we talked to on the phone only mentioned Risser casting and assured us it must be the same as Mehta casting just a different name for it. Does anyone else around here offer Mehta casting? It seems every orthopedic in Spokane either doesn't do spines or doesn't do kids. Anyone who does works out of Shriner's. We're thinking of donating the equipment and helping them get training if the Shriner's hospital will accept it if needs be. Has anyone ever tried that

before? My husband and I are still in college so traveling frequently to SLC, Chicago or Erie, PA for cast changing would be quite challenging and this just seemed easier if it's possible. Also, we're trying to gather as much primary source material about Mehta casting as possible (primary sources being peer-reviewed published articles and textbook data). So far we have "Growth as a corrective force in the early treatment of progressive infantile scoliosis" by Dr. Min Mehta, "Conservative treatment for idiopathic scoliosis" by Dr. Dickson and data from "The Growing Spine: Management of Spinal Disorders in Young Children". Does anyone have more primary source data they could share with me? Many sites ask for payment to even view the articles and I'm not sure if they'd offer new insight.Any help with these questions would be very greatly appreciated.Thank you,

Torrieri
