Honestly, I went into a brace fitting with Grace once when she was 18 months and she was upset and crying. The older she got, the better she did. I would just keep reminding her that there are no "owies". The techs are very careful and gentle. The main issue we had was the cutting it back off. The mold was usually thin enough that they just used blunt scissor things to cut it off and not a cast saw.

Bribery also works wonders. Good luck!

Hello,

My daughter Joy is about to get a new brace. She is 3 years old. The one she has now was fitted for her while she was asleep at her last casting. I am told we will just go in and they will wrap her in some kind of "cast" like material and then use that as a mold. However, she will be awake for this. I know it can't be painful but I am wondering if this will be at all traumatic for her. She has already had 9 procedures/surgeries and is a little leery of things as you can imagine. Any advice or has anyone gone through this with making a new brace? Thanks!

We've done our last few fittings without an anaesthetic.

I took some pictures of the process in our last visit and have posted them on my

blog if you want to see them.

Hope this helps. She is very good at staying still, and although it isn't

necessarily a pleasant process, it is over quickly, and she is back to her happy

self within minutes :)

And yes, bribery helps :)

We did this with our son about 6 months ago.  He is very anxious about the doctors so I was terrified. Let me tell you it was a breese! We took a video so others know what to expect. Check it out!  Have her watch too, so she sees it is simple.  We brought an ipad for him to watch a cartoon on but it was so quick there was really no need.

thank you all so much!!! this is so helpful.  i even let joy look at the pictures and she seemed like that would all be fine. :)  she is not one to like to lay on anything like that so that may be our biggest obstacle but we will pray all goes well.  thanks again.

Leah – I think my 3yr old daughter

was sedated (not anesthetized like for casting) but I just don’t remember

exactly. What I can definitely tell you is the brace they made from the

form did not fit her! I have no idea if this is a norm. She was

pretty upset getting fitted with the first brace after they made it b/c it was

too stinking tight. She picked out a different pattern, and they measured

her for a slightly larger brace. 2-3 days later it was ready, and she was

fine with it then.

Good luck,

Sherry

Glad to report that all went very smoothly today and very quickly!!!  First the greatest thing was (for Joy at least) is that she did the whole procedure standing up.  They had her put on 2 undershirt type things and stand with her arms straight up in the air.  They then wrapped the wet fiberglass/cast-like material around her.  She had to stand there while it dried but it probably took less than 5 minutes.  The orthotics dr. pressed in on her torso at certain points while it dried but that was no big deal for her.  I am so glad that for her it wasn't any big deal.  We go back in a few weeks to get the brace and have it adjusted.  Thanks again!
