I was just wondering if anyone out there has had success or any luck getting a 3

year old child casted? My little boy just turned 3 although he is the size of a

2 year old. We are hoping that he will still be eligible for casting.

There are centers who will cast kids ages 3+ with a proper Mehta Stlye EDF cast,

often just referred to as a " Risser " cast, although you have to check on what is

meant by a Risser cast because Risser cast is what generally all scoliosis casts

are called, not just the ones that are specially applied for the greatest

correction and to avoid deformation (such as ribs flaring out - a proper Mehta

style EDF cast has flaps on the front around the floating ribs to gently keep

them from flaring outwards while in the cast.

Some centers will generally only cast ages 4+, which is something I ran into!!!

I think the reason you will find so much mention of the younger kids being cast

is because it is ideal to cast before the scoliosis progresses very much, and if

the scoliosis shows up before age three, then casting then is good, as so many

specialists have wanted to wait until older etc.

Casting a child older than three is no problem, and we actually find it easier,

even if the results are not as dramatic as in the first two or so years. I

actually hope to cast my son during adolescence, and I know all you need to do

is find the doctor who knows what he is doing so far as casting a certain age

group goes and the rest falls into place.

My son for example, still has severe scoliosis (as in well over 40 degrees, plus

other deviations like rotation etc) but I am very hopeful that his years over

the age of 3 in cast will produce very worth while results. And I compare it to

other options -- for us it is the option that gives the best results and is the

least invasive.

We've had nothing but great results, and so many others from many other centers

have too, older children included!

Good luck and welcome to the group!

There are several of us.... The comments from Shauna are on target. My son

wasn't casted until 4 and his curve has been reduced abot 50%. We are currently

in cast #5 and have minimal issues with the casting process. Is Dylan in a brace

now? My family MUCH prefers cast over brace.

Dylan currently has a 59 degree curve and we have been waiting for 3 1/2 weeks

for a modified Kalibus brace. I talked to them again today and it's still not

ready. Tune Dr. here in Little Rock wants to put in a Schila Rod and said he

doesn't believe in bracing and doesn't think it works. We currently have an

application in to Shriners in Greenville. So, I am hoping that the Dr there will

feel casting is a good option for Dylan. He is so small, only 24 lbs. He is like

the size of a 2 year old and I would like to exhaust all options before surgery

is done. Thank you all for replying to me, my husband is currently deployed and

it is so nice to have someone to talk with about this.

Thank you so much for responding to me. I was scared they might not because of

his age and is curve being a 59.

Most will agree bracing doesn't work... You are lucky if it holds a curve at

all, though may slow progression. Mehta can cure or at least reverse the

curvature to a point. Since eachchild is different who knows what can happen w

Mehta. Look into it. Try it if at all possible. I will never regret casting at 4

but will always regret not pushing harder at 2 just bc I had a doc that was an

ass and told me casting wasn't a viable option.

He has an s curve and prior to casting he was high 40's (nearly 50) he's now mid

20's. We didn't get an xray last cast so not sure of correction but he grew

about 2 inches so it had to get better.

– My daughter was almost 2 ½ yrs

when she received her first EDF/Mehta cast at 49 degrees.  She will be 4 in

January, and is in cast #7.  It is working for her – she is down to the mid-20’s

out of cast, and less than 20 in cast.  I’m really hoping for more

correction this time since I think she’s having/had a growth spurt this

last month or so.  I actually think things are easier now that she’s

bigger.  She’s almost completely potty trained, and since her arms &

legs are longer in relation to the size of the cast, she can physically do more

now than she could a year ago.  She doesn’t fuss or complain about the

cast at all.  She’s not happy about it either, but it’s not an

issue.

There is someone else in the group looking

into or who had their older child casted – I’m thinking 5 or

older.  But I can’t remember who.

, was just a week past her 3rd birthday when she got her first cast back in January.  sounds similar - even now, as we approach her 4th birthday, she's still very tiny and petite.  My buddy at work has a boy that's just shy of two, and he already weights more than Addie does.

Sounds like he hasn't hit a major growth spurt yet, so hang in there.Father to , almost 4, in first brace

Hello-

My son who is 7 was casted for the first time in October. His curve was about 35 degrees. He is 17 degrees in cast. Although I am not expecting to reach a 0, I am very hopeful for the correction that we can get.

Absolutely. Ive seen children with 85 degree curves at age 3 get serial, edf casted and experienced GREAT results. Took a bit longer, but was very well worth it.
