Kylie is getting her second cast tomorrow but first one with the shirt. We had to pay out of pocket for the shirt ($85.00) and I'm just wondering if this is in the same price range others have had to pay?BeckyBecky Stuckless, Sign Language InterpreterDoug Reimneitz519.818.3203From: "Shauna" <scolimail@...>Sender: infantile scoliosis treatment Date: Wed, 31 Aug 2011 02:19:38 -0000<infantile scoliosis treatment >Reply infantile scoliosis treatment Subject: undershirt under cast Hi,We take Kieran to SLC and change his undershirt.I'm looking for words of wisdom when I put his undershirt back on tomorrow, or even leave it off for the next two months. Hey Shauna I hope that you were able to get it back on. There have been a few times where it was difficult to get 's shirt back on too. Try moving him around in different positions. also if they are sweaty at all that makes a huge difference. I think you would be okay to leave it off till morning or when he is not so full, but I don't think it is a good thing to leave it off till you go back. By the way when do you go back? Hi,

We take Kieran to SLC and change his undershirt.

I'm looking for words of wisdom when I put his undershirt back on tomorrow, or even leave it off for the next two months. I took it off tonight and can't get the clean one back on.

He's been complaining the last few days to get it changed but i've been busy in the AM. So my just turned 3 yr old Kieran talked me into changing it this evening. It was so very tight to get off!! But he insisted and wanted to be flossed with panty hose. So we did all that.

Then it was almost impossible to get most of the way back on. He cried painfully when it went over his hump, and he never fusses about it. I had to wait until I had soothed him before continuing it seemed so bad. I was worried we hurt him. And it easily slid over the hump!! Then I got it all the way on except in the back where it got stuck, and I tried and tried, but was unwilling to try any harder as he was crying from pain and it was still stuck. He was clearly suffering so much, and it never bothers him when we change it in the morning like we usually do -- as he is smaller then before he fills up on food and drink.

I can't believe I let him persuade me to change it at this hour but he seemed so confident and insistent!

Shauna,

That is why we stopped taking off the undershirts. Every cast is different, and

we found Audrey's got too tight to risk...

our undershirt is paid for by his hospital. But I have heard they are around

$85. I have been wanting to see what a pair of tight fitting undershirts might

go for of high quality material for the odd day under cast. They are easy

enough to come by for adults, the ones I am thinking of, but I have never seen

them in super small three year old size. I am very busy though, so have not as

of yet looked. I was going to start with Mountain Equipment Co-op, which may be

a chain local to the western part of the country I live in for all I know! But

I thought I would start there anyways :)

hi Beth,

yes, the shirt went back on no problem this morning! Night and day from trying

to get it on last night. He seemed no worse for the wear. He begs to be

flossed with pantyhose beneath his cast, so he was able to have that done both

last night and this morning.

I have found it very, very tight to get the undershirt back on before --

especially when he was younger, it seems to get easier as he gets older and

bigger. I imagine a lot of people would find this to be true of their

experience had they tried to change the undershirt of a kid a little older than

a year and a half, and then the same kid at three.

I did not even realize that he was so full!! I had thought that he had eaten

lightly and was changing it before he filled up completely. I have changed his

shirt when he has been stuffed and this was the most stuffed ever -- I guess I

did not notice how much he had clearly put into his little because his waistline

was not going to allow anything back on -- he bulged everywhere last night and

no where this morning -- he was SKINNY!! this morning. Wow, they can use those

calories at night.

We are back on Monday, Oct 17. I am taking Kieran this time and probably will

take him from hereon instead of switching with because the lack of

consistency in who is talking to the doctors I think is starting to cause

confusion about where we are and what plan we want to keep, because we are

always two visits behind by taking turns!

When are you back?

I so totally agree! I am always terrified of removing the shirt and shocked

that Kieran likes to get it changed so much. I honestly think he would want it

changed every day if I would only do it. I am such a sucker for my son.

One of fears was realized last night when it would not go on. My worse fear is

that he will get skin damage. His skin seems tougher as he gets older and so

far so good with this cast. He has had a chronic sore for two years now that

moves around his rib hump, as they change the area of pressure off of the sore

each cast change and that heals and he gets new one right beside it, always with

a bit of skin breakage. But it has never been quite bad enough to not cast and

it has never been infected, or septic, or deeper than a few layers of skin, plus

maybe some kind of odd bruise like marks. I am sure many parents have seen such

marks.

Getting older does seem to make casting easier for us, even if the correction

has stopped for us and he has had some regression. Kind of bitter sweet in a

way, that his body is stronger for the casting, but that the casting just isn't

giving dramatic results.

It's all good now though. The shirt went on with out remark this morning. Like

nothing had happened. I suspect other than getting stinky, I probably could

have left it off for a few days. Not willing to try though! As I have no idea.

Just glad it went back on.

Sorry for the long note. Guess it's been on my mind :)

flossing is where you take a clean pair of pantyhose or like material and feed

it though a part of the cast and gently rub it across the skin to remove debris,

relieve skin discomfort, and dead skin etc. It's done very gently.

Sorry , I know I was worried, but didn't mean to worry anyone else! I

figured I was just putting too much importance on the undershirt and hoping to

learn that was so. And yes, thankfully, the next morning I learned that it was

in fact a non-issue. Can't beat experience!

Hope you had a great summer!

I just paid $30 per shirt through our brace shop. The shirts are knit-rite short

sleeve shirts ~ exact same ones used at Chicago Shriner's under the casts.

Hey ,

Our first cast was similar to yours, the shirt was built into it. All of our SLC

casts have had the shirt seperate from the cast and able to be taken off. I

really like having it removable more. I change 's once a week or so. It

helps with hygeine and also helps sluff off dead skin, ect. You can always get

to the tummy if you just need to kiss it! ;)
