Guest guest
I use tin snips to cut the cast off. I always cut it off first thing in the morning with an empty tummy to give me a little more wiggle room with the snips. I start by taking off all the tape I can where I'm going to cut and once I can get to it, I pull out all the extra " stuffing " with my fingers as I go. I do the bottom of the tummy cut out, then top, then shoulder straps. It works great for us! Good luck! Guest guest
I usually hold Nora's hands and talk her through it while my husband cuts it off. The hardest part is cutting the top part due to it's thickness. My husband said to make sure the tin snips are sharp, he also said to eat your Wheates before you do it as well.lol Let us know how it goes. Guest guest
Wait a minute! Does this mean that some of you cut off your own casts? These are the Mehta plaster/fiberglass casts, right? Do you have to get special permission from the doctor? A special tool to cut it off? I have been so nervous about getting 's casts cut off with the loud/scary saw...not to mention the ONLY doctor in our area willing to cut it off only works twice/week and needs weeks advance notice to schedule the removal. Please let me know! Thanks! mom to , 15 months, 44 degrees, getting first cast on 9/8/
Guest guest
Yes we cut our cast off ourself so she can have a 5 day break to heal any skin issues. We are 7 hours away from the hospital so its not practical to go there just for that and yes, the doc told us to do it this way. Yes this is a Mehta/plaster cast. This is our first cast and this week was our first time and it went very well!! Thanks for the tips everyone by the way!! The hardest part was to get through the duct tape and mole skin. We had it off and had that sweet baby in my arms in about 10 minutes! Oh it feels so good to feel her little body again > > Wait a minute! Does this mean that some of you cut off your own casts? Guest guest
, Yes, I cut my son's cast off at home everytime. He is in his 4th mehta cast right now and we have never had one cut off with a cast saw. When our care coordinator first suggested it as an option because we travel out of state for casting, I thought she was nuts! However, we had a situation with our first cast and it had to come off early....so, I had someone run to the hardware store for me and get some tin snips and I went for it! I'll never go the cast saw route. It's totally doable at home and not at all traumatic. I just use resgular old tin snips from the hardware store...nothing fancy at all. I can't imagine your Dr would have a problem with you doing it yourself, but you could always ask to be sure. The biggest issue to be on the same page with your doc is the time you allow your kiddo to be out of cast each time. That time frame can vary for each individual case. Good luck! Guest guest
My 16 year old daughter helped me with ours. We took turns holding kylie on our lap (laid on her belly) with a movie on for her to watch. One suggestion is to cut through the cotton in your first snip and then the plaster/fiberglass. Also we put our hand inside the cast and had the tin snips follow so the tool was never in contact with her. Hope that helps!BeckyBecky Stuckless, Sign Language InterpreterDoug Reimneitz519.818.3203From: "caren339@..." <caren339@...>Sender: infantile scoliosis treatment Date: Thu, 01 Sep 2011 00:07:00 -0000<infantile scoliosis treatment >Reply infantile scoliosis treatment Subject: Any tips for removing cast?? Guest guest
From Caren " " Oh it feels so good to feel her little body again " " That's exactly how I feel - To give her a hug against her body is so lovely It must feel so nice for them too. Guest guest
Hi , Some docs dont have a problem w/ cast removal at home, and some do so please talk to the treating doc first to avoid any delayed treatment. Just to be on the safe side. How'd lil J's 1st cast go? I hope all is well and that you both have adjusted to cast life! HRH Wait a minute!
