The cast is so easy in your daily life! Your will learn its not removable like a

brace...easier on you and them. It takes a few days to adjust but I promise it

will become your new normal. *important* Mehta EDF casts work to straighten and

correct the curve and rotation. Brace only helps maintain the current curvature.

Contact a Shriners who practice Mehta casting. My sons spine was saved by it and

he is now cast/brace free! Where are you located???

We are all happy to help. Please ask any questions!

In general short and to the point:

Bracing doesn't work

Casting does

Yes, my baby is six months old, we found his infantile scoliosis at four months. The ortho that we see sent him for MRI and said if it was negative then casting would be the next step. He said we would probably cast for six months then go to brace. But yesterday he said probably one cast if xray showed straight spine at follow up appt, then would take him back to operating room to mold for a brace. So, I am not sure about cast vs brace either. I don't want to stop casting if it is going to get worse in brace but this cast is awful big and bulky.(its waterproof, not sure if that's why) He can't move head good, and he's trying to roll over and can't. He seems swollen and everytime he wakes up he is scared. We are from Alabama and go to local children's hospital.Sent from my Verizon Wireless Phone

I totally agree with everything

wrote! It took my daughter a couple weeks to totally adjust to the

cast. After that, it was a lot more emotionally difficult for me than it

was for her. After a year and six casts, she took two months off and

spent them in a brace which was wonderful since she could go swimming

daily. The tough part was putting that brace back on her every day –

although the “tough” part only lasted for a few minutes as she

protested, and we kinda forced her back into it. She’s back in a

cast now. It took her a few days to readjust to the weight and change in

her center of gravity. I prayed the brace would maintain what we

achieved, but never expected correction. Correction comes when she’s

in cast.

I can’t emphasize this enough: make

sure you are talking to a Mehta-trained doctor!!!! The original ortho we

saw thought he was in “the know” but he was not up-to-date on

treatment developments.

Frances – when was he casted? If in the last day or so, the swelling will

go down (it’s from the IV fluids). He’ll learn to roll over again soon. It’s

a bit of a struggle at first, but he’ll persevere! You can always

request/campaign for additional casting.

A waterproof cast is effective for very small curves only, so its great that the doc suspects he will only need one.  The doc will review thoroughly before taking the step to brace or continue casting.  The picture is of him is just precious.  His swelling should decrease day by day and recovery will should be smooth after that. Thanks for sharing.HRH From: infantile scoliosis treatment [mailto:infantile scoliosis treatment ] On Behalf Of francesgauntt@...Sent: Tuesday, October 11, 2011 6:14 AMinfantile scoliosis treatment Subject: Re: Re: Cast 1 Yes, my baby is six months old, we found his infantile scoliosis at four months. I might do a non waterproof one at that degree.  Our doctor switched us to a brace at under 10 laying down.  If that helps.

Its my understanding that only low curves can benefit from waterproof

casting as the docs can achieve a better mold & better correction with

plaster of paris. There are many factors involved in casting and every

childs spine is so different. Do you know if theres rotation?

Are all casts supposed to have plaster of paris? Grace's only ever had fiberglass. There would be a layer of pading/shirt, then fiberglass, another layer of padding, and yet another layer of fiberglass.

Just curious.

All the docs that ISOP works with apply stockinette, padding if needed,

plaster, and a very thin layer of fiberglass...just to protect the

plaster.

Jane,

We are new to this casting so I don't know very much yet, our son gets his

frist Cast in less then 48 hrs... But one of the reasons we chose to

travel out of state for his cast is that our Dr. in Omaha only used fiber

glass as well. He explained to us that some doctors believe very strongly

in the type of material used & he just simply didn't believe that it

mattered. He opted for a thinner cast Vs. caring about the type of

materials used even though he claimed that he did Mehta casting. In my

infantile scoliosis crash course I found that the doctors doing true EDF

Mehta casts seemed to use plaster as the main material. Now there were

many other factors that led us to travel out of state for his cast the

biggest being that our Omaha Dr. flat out told us that SLC gets better

results & that he just couldn't compare & he had an older model

table...etc. So I really don't know if the materials matter or not, but

this is what we have chosen for our son. If your getting the results you

want for your child with whatever type of cast they are in...I say that's

wonderful! :) Hope this little bit of information helps!

then casting would be the next step. He said we would probably cast for

six months then go to brace. But yesterday he said probably one cast if

xray showed straight spine at follow up appt, then would take him back

to

operating room to mold for a brace. So, I am not sure about cast vs

brace

either. I don't want to stop casting if it is going to get worse in

brace

but this cast is awful big and bulky.(its waterproof, not sure if

that's

why) He can't move head good, and he's trying to roll over and can't.

He

seems swollen and everytime he wakes up he is scared. We are from

Alabama

and go to local children's hospital.
