Guest guest
Dear Mandi You have done well.. some parents are only able to lay a hand on their child for a few seconds at a time initially... and then as their body realises the goodness in the TST parents can work longer and longer... even these few seconds at a time will begin to make a difference. The reason I am in favour of the parents doing TST on themselves is that I found I became less anxious and less stressed.. Tatijana picks up on my stress as efficiently as a barometer.. and this impacts on her.. so by being in a more relaxed state, and getting better sleep as a result, I found Tatijana was more in tune to get the most from the TST. It can take several weeks for the child to willingly accept TST.. One little ASD kid I know ran off every time his Mum tried to massage him... and he never stood still he constantly ran around.. when he went back for his second visit, he actually sat quietly on the carpet playing with his toys whilst his Mum learned the new massage sequences.. He was a different little boy... TST helped he get proper sleep so he was not hyper tired... resulting in hyper activity. The soft handtowels give a gentler pressure to a wider area, so this may be less noticeable to Sam.. It will work out fine.. even if initially Sam needs you to do it Sam's way. Guest guest
I promise you that the first month of getting Joe to accept the exercises was terrible. I was lucky if I managed five minutes in total per day. I started by just aiming for 1 minute of each exercise. I kept telling him that mummy was doing this to make him better and gradually he accepted that this was now part of the routine. Five months down the line he will still only accept 3 minutes. I worked out that I could get 12 compressions done in that time and he likes to count them. The minute we reach 12 my hand gets knocked away. The routine now is that he comes into my bed in the morning for "cuddles" and I have one arm round him and one arm doing TST. I aim to get four lots of 3 minutes done then. I then try to get another two 3 minute sessions done in between teeth cleaning (him) and hair drying (me). The other two 3 minute sessions only happen if he's feeling really cooperative, but if I don't manage the whole thing one day I just make sure I start with the ones I missed the next day. He will not tolerate the flannels. We are still seeing results. School tell me that he is less prone to outbursts, that they can now negotiate with him when he's starting to get uptight. I've noticed that his language is improving. He has lots of learned phrases and uses them appropriately, but is now able to turn them round so that he's using "I" and "me" instead of "you". I do the exercises on me in between doing them on him, also in the morning, but usually keep one to do at bedtime because it does help me go to sleep. Nic From: Mum231ASD@... Guest guest
HI Nic LOvely to hear your joy too with TST. I think you have shown beautifully how each Mum is in tune with their child and KNOWs how to work with them to achieve these gains. We had to do shorter periods initially as they were making big changes very quickly and Tatijana needed to adjust a little more slowly.. and within two weeks she was tolerating the full five minutes.. as that is what she wanted to do... Like you I have really benefitted with far better sleep since doing TST on myself. Guest guest
Hi Mandi Thank god it is not just me either, I am with you ..... trying to get my hand on charlie during the day is a no go zone and at night he turns away. I will take light from what the others and aim to slowly build up! I think anytime we get to sit or lay down .... I need immediate rest so have also found that it is one cycle on me if i am lucky and I am asleep! Massive congrats on the DP win, you have to love the good days when everything seems to be going your way! I believe i am having my DP doubled next month due to having another baby, wished they had helped earlier and i may not be this ill pre baby! Love to know any ideas on DP or DLA as they seem to be an ongoing battle.KateOn 16 Mar 2010, at 13:55, Mum231ASD@... wrote:Been back from East Grinstead for a week tomorrow and only JUST managed 4 mins of the exercises. Guest guest
Good luck Mandi, I'm sure that you will get there in the end. I'm sure that I pressed too hard to start with for a while and it didn't seem to be a problem. Hopefully, he will start to tolerate it better soon. I agree that doing the exercises on yourself really do help you as a person to feel better as well. x > > > In a message dated 16/03/2010 16:48:59 GMT Standard Time, > michelle0471@... writes: > > Just thinking, would the ABA approach work, give them a reward for > co-operating? Guest guest
Hi Mandi I remember the osteo saying that sometimes ASD kids are more irritated by gentle pressure than firmer pressure.. he says it is a bit like being tickled... the light pressure is more ticklish than harder pressure. It is interesting that Sam wants harder pressure, I recall you saying he was pressing on her hand.. and I wonder if initially he needs this whilst his sensory system adjusts to the new therapy... Using slightly greaterpressure than you learned at Advance will make some difference.. and then perhaps this could become a lighter and lighter touch as Sam calibrates the massage? Three compressions is good.. it is two more than one!.. so 200% improvement there already this week! I still want to close my eyes while I'm doing it, so tryin to practise on me with eyes open Also, I said lets get flannels and he went and laid on the bed, only let me do one that time. Guest guest
Hi Mandi, Haven't been on the c'puter since our return from Advance and just saw this. I'd agree that it somehow sounds so easy when you hear from everyone else.... but we struggled a lot at the beginning of TST! I really did not think we would ever get through the first 3 months .... but we did. Norman found it very hard tolerating the excercises and exactly like Sam he would constantly be flicking my hand away or swiping the flannels from under my hand (I really never expected this of him, especially the sneaky way and the speed at which he did this). He'd also purposely lay his elbow on top of my hand (whilst doing the excercises) but I think this was to intentionally stop me from doing the compressions. Now (after 3rd visit) - He still does all this now but a whole lot less ..... His much more tolerant of the compressions and is more patient but he is very quick to turn over the minute he hears the timer go off as he seems to have made the connection that he has a five minute break! We still struggle with the back excercises here, as he cannot tolerate laying on his belly for any reasonable length of time, so these hardly ever get done, but have learnt from not to stress over it. We have made it this far and have seen some small improvements (still waiting for better sleep though!). You will get there - try not to stress. emily > > Been back from East Grinstead for a week tomorrow and only JUST managed 4 > mins of the exercises. > > Tried asleep 30mins, 45 mins, 2 hours, 4 hours, when he is sleepy, when > he's awake.................what he does is put his hand on top of mine and > press HARD.
