Guest guest
Hi le My daughter Grace was just over 3 when she got her first cast. The cast day itself is stressful, there are links on the website for "what to expect the first day". Honestly, having lived the bracing life, I'm pretty sure you will find that cast life is a breeze! There is no whining when they want you to take it off, or worry about getting it too tight/loose. And it really isn't an issue once you get into the fall/winter/spring to avoid water, etc. Good luck to you! Madison was born with Hip Displaysia and put in the pavlik harness which made the hips normal after about 6-8 months. At 13 months I found a lump on her lower back. Went to the orthopaedic and they did an MRI and saw the early stages of infantile scoliosis. They followed her curves. Back in October she was showing curves around 25-27 degrees (2 curves for her) and in April it jumped to 40 degrees for both. Tried the bracing and have been successful for night wearing. Recently we changed orthopaedics due to various reasons and the doctor at Boston Childrens spoke about casting her as an option. We go August 15 for the first cast and are scared to death about it. Really hoping for some success with the casting. My sister ended up having two back surgeries for scoliosis - she was in eighth grade for the first and a senior in high school for the second but never found hers this early on. There are so many questions and reading the updates on here are so promising and uplifting. It is tough to think what she will go through over the next year or so and hope that my son doesn't have the early signs of scoliosis.le
Guest guest
My daughter, , had just turned 3 when her first cast was applied. She did GREAT with it, and her Cobb angle (main curve, even though she does have a second and third curve as well) was 36 before her first cast. After her 3rd and last cast it was about 10. She has been in a brace for almost 1 year now and it's still holding at about 10. Casting is AWESOME! Even though there are limitations on water and sand (obviously much harder in the summer months), both her and I liked the casts much more than the brace. It's just more uncomfortable and of course there's the issue of off and on.Best of luck! You'll love casting. Oh, and make sure it's a Mehta-style cast!~ : )From: daniellejoy1978 <daniellejoy1978@...>infantile scoliosis treatment Sent: Thu, July 14, 2011 3:04:07 PMSubject: Almost 3 yr old going for first cast Hello. Guest guest
I totally agree with Jane:) If you have braced a cast is pretty much a breeze! My family prefers cast to brace hands down .... Casts can cure, they are more comfy for our son, he complains less, runs more, he's happier AND his back is slowly changing. He's 4. I wish he would have been 3 when we started! You are lucky to have such low numbers on your side (compared to many other children). Good luck!
