Guest guest
Breese is almost 11 months old and had her first orthopaedic appointment this afternoon. She has congenital scoliosis with a 30 degree curve. The xrays we have are from about a month ago that the urgent care took and noticed her curve by chance. Dr. Katz told us that she does not want to do anything with her but observe her with xrays every six months. I requested a sooner check so she agreed with four months. She said that Breese has extra bone in her spine that is on one side but not the other and with these xrays she could not tell if there was a disk or not. She also could not tell if there were any problems further down in her spine because the xray was not clear. She also refused to do an MRI with the reasoning that the negative our ways the posative. We August so hopefully they will have more of an interest in finding out where she is now instead of waiting months. Does anyone else have experience with congenetal scoliosis? Guest guest
This is a sneaky underhanded trick I have learned.... Take it or leave it:) In the past when our doc has wanted to wait a certain time period and we felt it was too long, I politely take the apt card but call back in a week or so and tell them I made a scheduling error and need to move the apt up.... 4 or 6 months can be a long time! I feel that docs like to take their time waiting to see what happens- I guess they hope everything will get better but it seems like most of the time the situation progresses. Your baby is at the perfect age to get the ball rolling on MRIs or whatever else is needed to pinpoint the best course of treatment. I hope your august apt goes better. Maybe the doc will be more agressive designing a treatment plan for your tot:) Eventually you will be required to get an MRI and more xrays so you might as well get the ball rolling is my personal opinion. If there is uncertainty w the extra bone and/or clarity of lower back and disk then I would think that needs to be cleared up so you know as a parent what you are dealing with and can help decide what the vest course of treatment is. My son is 4 and is in his 3rd cast. He wore a brace for 2 yrs prior to Mehta. It took us a long time to find an agressive ortho surgeon who supported Mehta and helped us get accepted into a hospital in Dallas. We wasted sooooo much precious time getting him treatment he needed and it was so very very, VERY frustrating! I'm sure you will be happy to compare the august apt to this one. Doctors can be so different it's crazy! Best wishes! Guest guest
I have a good feeling about Dr. . I have heard nothing but great things about him and it sounds like he is more agressive with the treatments which I hope means he will support the need for the testing to be done ASAP. It is frustrating, especially not knowing! I am glad to hear that you pushed for the treatment you wanted for your son. I have heard all great things about the mehta casting and this was the treatment I wanted for my daughter when I thought she had infantile scoliosis. Is your son getting good results even though he didn't get the cast for a while? > > Breese is almost 11 months old and had her first orthopaedic appointment this afternoon. Guest guest
Yes he is:) We get our next cast on August 8th and are hoping for continued improvement. Cast #3 xray showed upper curve 28 lower curve 21. When we started his numbers were in the high 40's. His rib cage is alligning and becoming more symetrical so we are hoping to see a bigger improvement in the upper curve. We will take what we can get.... If we can get his incast numbers below 20 and eventually hold him there outa cast we will have waged a good war:) Hes older so I knew going in he probably won't be cured, but no one knows that for sure and he MIGHT be! Our goal is to manage his curve in the high teens to avoid surgery and right now we are on target w that. As for his first ortho I could still tie him to a tree and leave him there w no food or water for a week. Yah, I hold grudges.... I think if docs aren't willing to get out of old school practices they need to refer you to someone else or retire. As far as I'm concerned everything that came out of his mouth was close to a lie. What if it was his kid? Anyway, best of luck! August is almost here! T Sent from my iPhone On Jul 20, 2011, at 3:53 PM, " cardear4l " <cardear4l@...> wrote: I have a good feeling about Dr. . Guest guest
That is great that he has had improvement. Hopefully there will be more improvement before he is grown and he does not need surgery. I can not imagine having to have surgery on my back, let alone a child. I agree about doctors. So many people now days are just out to make a buck and don't care about the quality of their work. If you are involved with human services especially they need to be 100% involved in the care being provided! I hear you about holding the grudges...it is hard to let some things go and something that is not in the best interest of our children is especially long lasting. > > Breese is almost 11 months old and had her first orthopaedic appointment this afternoon.
