Guest guest
Magdaline, There is definitely a learning curve that takes time for kids to adjust to their first cast. Observe the most comfortable position for her to sit in, and encourage that. My daughter had to recline more in the car. She could not sit on the floor anymore. She would sit on the toddler chairs and play at the table, stand at the table, or kneel on the floor and play on her bed. It took her a good three weeks to adjust to walking up steps, picking stuff off the floor, and yes, picking herself up after falling. It’s a year later, and she’s 3.5yrs old and in a brace now. She is still trying to learn the best ways to dress herself and put her shoes on when wearing her brace. She’s also working on pulling herself into the car and climbing in and out of her carseat. She does struggle a bit with these tasks, much more than a child who can bend at the waist. Nia Elisse will adjust with time. Hang in there!! Sherry Just got back from our 1st casting Hi all, I am the mother of 11 month old Nia Elisse, we just got back from her first casting at the Texas ish Rite in Dallas. I am happy about the results so far just looking at her X-rays in her new cast, the only problem is, my baby is very very active, and since her cast yesterday, she is not even able to sit, stand, or do anything except for lay down, so she's been crying Non-stop, and is very miserable. I took her on a car ride just now to see if she would stop crying :-( Has anyone else had the problem i'm having to where your child can no longer sit up? Will this last? Nia is only 11 months old, but she sat fine, and got up on chair, and other items to stand. I'm still wondering if I did the right thing by casting her. Guest guest
Hi,My daughter Avery was casted at 16 months and had just learned to walk. She couldn't do anything at first either. She could walk slightly, but fell quickly. It took about 2-3 weeks before she had figured out new ways to do everything. Just recently at the end of cast #2 she has learned to sit on the floor on her butt, but she doesn't play that way. She learned to kneel and play. She also does the "W" sit and out physical therapist okay'd this while in her cast.Give it a couple of weeks and she should have figured a lot out. The first day was the worst, but it gets a little better every day.RandiMom to Avery and 22 months. Avery 9 degrees in 3rd cast, was 39 degrees before casting. Guest guest
Hi Magdaline, I'm so glad that the casting went well and that everything looks good. The beginning is very tough.... The first few days were very similar with Noelle and then she took off! Give it some more time.... Remember that the cast does weigh a couple of pounds and it is solid, top-heavy weight. An extra couple of pounds on an adult may not feel like much of a difference, but it is a HUGE difference to children who don't weigh that much at all.... Like adding on an extra 10% or more to their body weight. I think you will find in the upcoming days that she will begin to adjust more and more. In the meantime, I'm hoping that you can prop her up a bit with pillows or a beanbag chair so that she can see her toys and her cartoons a bit better. Call me if you need to.... I'm always here! Guest guest
You soooo did the right thing. If the problems persist just take her back to be looked at. Are you giving her tylenol? We go to ish rlRite also. We travel 8 hrs and the first cast our son had to ride back home laying on my lap half the way And that was 1 1/2 days AFTER the procedure. His 4th cast he was up and running/jumping 2 hrs after we left the hospital and we left the next morning w him in his car seat.
