I posted this in with another discussion but it isn't getting much attention so I thought I'd repost it as it's own topic just in case others might have input who weren't interested in the first discussion. Donna did give me a great response though and I'm copying and pasting it in the bottom of this. Anyway, I've been poking around the web reading about this a bit. I found this website that I found helpful...

http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/wiggy1.htm (It even has a sample workout AND worksheets you can print off.)

Here's my question though: My main goals for strength training are: (1) improving functionality in my daily life (cleaning the house, playing with the kids, etc.), so that I don't tire quickly and can get things done quickly and efficiently when necessary; (2) building lean muscle to help boost my metabolism which will help me continue maintaining my weight, especially as I get older and; (3) pure vanity. I wan to look toned but not bulky.

So, what kind of workouts are best for my goals or perhaps what ratio of different kinds of workouts would be best and if you can recommend videos, instructors, sets of videos or anything else helpful to address these needs I'd appreciate it!

Thanks!

Here's what Donna said:

Hi ,

My totally uneducated opinion is that more endurance-based workouts will best meet your goals - I think the FIRM workouts you are doing fit the bill nicely - also some of the Cathe's were you do more reps with a moderate weight. I particularly like the FIRM b/c they are often "functional" in that many times you'll be working two body parts (compound moves) at the same time.

Just my two cents!Donna
