Guest guest
Sue They normally ask you to complete the whole thing again. Always worth photocopying what you send in so you can just repeat it. They always put we will look at your whole claim again to put you off claiming they do it with everyone. If you feel you need mobility then go for it and dont be put off. And if you are turned down again and it goes to tribunal then dont be put off either. The paperwork will go to tribunal and even then they will send you more letters to say do you want to go to tribunal we will look at the whole case again. If you feel you need it then go for it Jo > > Hi everyone, > My son was awarded DLA in Sept. of last year but because he wasnt yet 3 he wasnt given the mobility component. Now we want to claim this component we have been sent 3 big forms to fill in (they look like the original DLA form but split into 3 sections).Surely they only need the `help with getting around`section? It feels as if we have only just completed the original form,(which took simply ages) and his situation hasnt altered! Also from what I can understand if we do apply for this component they look at the whole claim again and we might then be awarded less than before! Has anyone else been through this awful process? have they sent me the wrong forms? Cant phone them because they are closed. Please someone tell me I havent got to go through all that again!! Feel as if I have just been sent back to the starting line in an obstacle race. Thanks for any help. Sue >
Guest guest
Hi We went to a CAB and they helped us with filling the form out the first time we claimed motability. He knew all the terms/ phrases that are needed. We had to go through the process again recently (when my son reached 14). We went back to CAB and they said there was an option of having doctor come out and see us instead of spending ages filling out the forms again. We had a doctor visit and he met my son, listened to us and submitted the form in our favour. Guest guest
Hi SueI have just had to go through this process again as well. I sat down with a person that has retired from being an assessor for DLA applications and yes the bad news is that she got me to fill out the forms from scratch and all three of them. She does recommend that people photocopy them for reference and when having to go through this process again. There is always a chance of being awarded less, you can either sit with what you have or try for the addition of mobility. You may be able to get help to fill in the form from charity groups but it will depend on where you live as to what is available. I am in the Richmond borough in London, and they have been hugely helpful if you are close by i can put you in touch with the same person.Good luck.KateOn 27 Feb 2010, at 15:17, swerenowski@... wrote:Hi everyone,My son was awarded DLA in Sept. of last year but because he wasnt yet 3 he wasnt given the mobility component. Guest guest
I think it's difficult to get the mobility component for an under 5. Just my experience and from asking around. We started to receive higher rate mobility when Archie (now 10) was 5 (got it on first application). We get it because he has 'severe mental impairment' (their criteria) and receives higher rate care. He needs someone holding onto him all the time, or to wear a harness when we go out. It's been awarded indefinitely now (last year), although I presume we will have to reapply when he is 16. Guest guest
Hi Sue I feel the same as it seems an awful lot of effort I can spend elsewhere but a friend of mine recently was awarded high rate mobility but only after appeal. Also remember it is long term and open to reassesment the same as the rest of your DLA. Guest guest
If you can, get expert assistance to fill in the forms eg local law centre, disability rights organisation. This will take the strain off you and they are used to answering the questions. We were turned down for mobility at first and appealed. After 2 years they caved in and I got 2 years backdated mobility DLA for Henry plus the difference between the higher and middle rates of care! Guest guest
Hi SueIt is a soul-destroying experience, isn't it. I agree with other posts, probably best to get some expert advice / help in filling out the form.Just to tell you my experience, which I must admit is a bit hazy now as my son Matty is now 10. At age 3 Matty's difficulties were very similar to those of your son, no danger awareness, non-compliance. I suppose some procedures may have changed in the intervening years, but, like you, I applied for DLA before Matty was 3. However, I was advised to apply for mobility at the same time, because even though it would automatically be turned down, the application would remain in the system and I wouldn't have to start from scratch when he turned 3. It seems unbelievably convoluted and illogical, but that's how it worked. I was awarded highest rate for personal care for Matty, but my application for mobility was turned down because he was too young. Just after Matty's 3rd birthday, I contacted the DWP and they sent me 2 forms. I've just checked my files, and I still have copies - they were the DBD420 and DLA434(Child). I only had to enter information regarding the mobility component, not the personal care. The application went through and mobility was awarded. Since then I've never been asked to fill in another form but have continued to receive DLA at the highest rate with mobility.I realise this information might not help you much and it may be out of date now. But it might be worth contacting DWP and asking about those forms? In any case, even if you do have to go through the whole assessment again, I would think it was unlikely that they would award you less - as you say, it's a very short time since the original award was made, and your son's condition hasn't altered. It might be worth posting to ask if anyone has ever experienced that, ie had their original award reduced after applying for mobility. I'm sure they make these systems so complicated to try to put people off, but I wouldn't give up on the mobility component.Joanne A.> Hi everyone,> My son was awarded DLA in Sept. of last year but because he wasnt yet 3 he wasnt given the mobility component. Guest guest
Sue, I had exactly the same experience, I appealed twice for highest rate dla and was finally awarded two months before my son's third birthday...when it came to applying for mobility they made me fill in the whole damn lot again but after speaking to them they assured me that his DLA would not be changed. We were given mobility no problem, I just described his general lack of danger and refusal to walk at times.... has quite bad hypermobility in his hips which does affect his feet and is under Orthopeadics at our local hospital, I think that may well have helped our case - also detailed that we had been given a majors buggy to support outdoor walking, shopping etc... Definitely keep copies of your forms, it really helps and i've been sharing mine with other mum's new to claiming.....It's time consuming and draining but I just have the opinion that i won't let them get away with not supporting /us...after all it's what pays for his biomed!!!!!!!!!!! x > Hi everyone, > My son was awarded DLA in Sept. of last year but because he wasnt yet 3 he wasnt given the mobility component. Guest guest
Hi Sue, We get DLA at the higher rate and mobility. We applied when DD was 4 (she is 10 now). She is severely autistic but we still had to have two tribunals as they said that her night time needs were the same as any other 4 year old - totally had no idea!! I managed to get a great local charity to help and I finally did get mobility. I don't know if you said which level of DLA but I was under the impression that you had to have higher DLa to get mobility. It is worth it and as every one has said before it does help to get someone like Citizens advice bureau to help. best wishes Sue > > > In a message dated 01/03/2010 15:23:47 GMT Standard Time, > swerenowski@... writes: > > I just wonder how many children with autism are actually given the > mobility element?
