Guest guest
Yes it is only done under anesthesia. There is no way they could reposition the spine in cast with a child kicking and screaming. I know it was hard enough to mold Thaddeus for his brace while he was awakeSent from my iPhoneOn 2011-05-11, at 8:52 AM, L F-N <congenitalkyphosis@...> wrote: Hi everyone!I have a question:Is Mehta casting only done under general anesthesia? Thanks! -Laimi
Guest guest
I know that older kids, can be casted while awake. I know they have at least 1 in Rochester right now. I;m not sure how old they would have to be. Guest guest
ET w/ EDF/Mehta casting is normally done under anesthesia so as not to alarm/traumatize the infant/young child. If the child is older (6-7-8-9) he/she may be able to undergo the EDF casting process w/out anesthesia. Ive seen older kiddos just hop up on the frame while the team explains everything they are doing to the child and why. It all depends on the age/understanding of the child.HRH From: infantile scoliosis treatment [mailto:infantile scoliosis treatment ] On Behalf Of L F-NSent: Wednesday, May 11, 2011 9:53 AMCc: congenitalscoliosissupport ; Infantile_Juvenile_Scoliosis ; infantile scoliosis treatment Subject: Mehta casting Hi everyone!I have a question:Is Mehta casting only done under general anesthesia? Thanks! -Laimi

Guest guest
Our docter here at Portland Shriner's said he always sedates because the body is more relaxed and easier to manipulate. Guest guest
, you just made my day!!! Still I have to check if any of these doctors think the casting will help with his new lumbar dextroscoliosis. This one is a compensatory curve. I guess it should help. He is 6. He has developed several drug allergies in the last 2 years and I am worried, thinking that he is at a higher risk of having an anaphylactic shock at any time. Knowing that older kids may go w/o general gives me hope. Guest guest
I'm new in learning about Mehta casting... very new. However, my son is 7 and we are looking into it. Our doc said he would be put under so that all of the muscles are relaxed and easier to manipulate. I didn't know they could do it with the child awake. From: Hyatt <heather@...>Subject: RE: Mehta castinginfantile scoliosis treatment Date: Thursday, May 12, 2011, 11:51 AM ET w/ EDF/Mehta casting is normally done under anesthesia so as not to alarm/traumatize the infant/young child. Guest guest
They can if the child is older and feels comfortable enough doing so. It really depends on the child & the docs comfort level.HTH’sHRH From: infantile scoliosis treatment [mailto:infantile scoliosis treatment ] On Behalf Of MockSent: Thursday, May 12, 2011 3:19 PMinfantile scoliosis treatment Subject: RE: Mehta casting I'm new in learning about Mehta casting... very new. Guest guest
We are in Madison Wisconsin. My daughter got her first cast last Monday. Where we live there are no Mehta trained orthopedics in our state(as far as I know). Does anyone know anything about some of the orthopedics that do Mehta casting? I need all the info I can get and I need it fast. We are willing to travel wherever we need to for treatment. Thank you!
