Guest guest
- My son Jonas had tethered cord surgery in April 2010 to release his tethered cord and a fatty filum. I am not sure if this is the same thing as sectioning surgery (no one ever used that term). I was worried to death about Jonas having to stay on his back for several days in the hospital, but with lots of new movies he had never seen and creative ways to keep him busy while lying down he did great. He was 19 months at the time of surgery. I did have to straight cath Jonas every 4 hours for 6 weeks after surgery. But his bladder is doing just find now and we are potty training. Please feel free to e-mail me privately if you want to chat! hallmark13@... -Hollie Lee Mama of Jonas 2.5 years old in 6th cast 25.7* down from 73*

Guest guest
My son had a tethered cord that was released a couple of years ago. He did not have a fatty filum though. They released the cord, he had to lay flat for 24 hours, he stayed one night in the hospital and walked out the next day. Does your child have a lot of fatty tissue around the filum? Guest guest
Thanks for the input. My son is 7 years old and the neurosurgeon is suspecting and occult tight filum, which means they can't see it but he has the symptoms. She said there may be some fat no absolutely sure. They told me to expect about 3 days in the hospital. I hope he does as well as your son did and is walking in a day!! Wow!! Did your son have syrinx in his spinal cord...and if yes are they smaller?? Guest guest
Thanks. Was having to cath him because of the tethered cord surgery? I am so glad to hear of kids going through this with no problem. Guest guest
Yes, the surgery affects their ability to empty their bladder properly. But I'm sure this would be much easier to do on a 7 year old!! And he might actually be able to do it himself! Jonas also has a syrinx and a mild Chiari I. Guest guest
Hi , I'm not sure if it's the same as filum sectioning surgery but my daughter Elena had a fatty filum release surgery in Sept 2010 at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. She was about 4 1/2 yearsold at the time. She had to lay flat on her back for 48 hours post surgery. Beyond the surgery I was very worried about the laying flat for 2 days-part but to my surprise - she did great! (I just kept those movies rolling and let her play with my ipod touch which normally she is not allowed to play with!) She was up on her feet playing as usual after the 2 days and her back was a bit swollen for the next few weeks. The neurosurgeon told us the main risk was potential damage to the nerves that control the bowels and bladder. Elena has had no such problems. 6 weeks post surgery, her neurosurgeon gave Elena the " all clear " . We had hoped the release surgery would have improved her scoliosis however it did not seem to have an effect. Now we will just continue to work with the orthopedic surgeon on that. Best of luck to you and your son, Liane > > Has anyone experienced filum sectioning surgery to release a tethered cord? My son will undergo surgery in June and I am so worried about it. Guest guest
Hi, Our son has a fatty filum which was found as an incidental on his MRI for his scoliosis, however we haven't noticed any symptoms from it and we consulted several ped. neurosurgeons about it. Two advised that we have it released now and four said that the research shows that we should wait and watch closely for bowel/bladder, and neuro changes in the feet and toes. So we are going with the 4 doc's who said to wait as well as our own research. We read many studies on this topic and hope that we are doing the right thing. Our son does not have a tethered cord and no symptoms. I am wondering about your kids.....do they have symptoms? If so , what are they? Our son just turned 2 last week. Also in the research that we found it did say that some adults have fatty filum alone without tethered cords and they never had symptoms so we are hoping for the best and I hope that everything goes well for your little ones also. Take care. Guest guest
Hi , Our daughter had the fatty filum without the tethered cord and did not have any symptoms. Like your son, our daughter had an MRI for her scoliosis and they found the fatty filum. We used a similar approach with our decision for her to have surgery in that 4 neurosurgeons discussed her case and all 4 agreed that she should have it done, so we went for it. I have also read however that some people find out incidentally in their adulthood that they have a fatty filum but then never develop symptoms. I'm not sure of the criteria the doctors consider when deciding if a patient is a good candidate for the surgery. Guest guest
, Yes I agree- not enough research has been done.
