Guest guest
My baby is six weeks old and I have noticed for a while now that she always appears curved the same way all the time. I think it's just getting more noticeable because she's getting bigger. Her left middle section protrudes and her head tilts to her right. I've googled infantile scoliosis and the symptoms seem to be what I'm seeing in my daughter. The pediatrician is going to look at her at her two month appointment. Thinking about her having this problem is worrying me a lot. Did anyone notice their baby having the symptoms before two months? Does anyone here have experience with scoliosis that actually self-corrected? I have not been able to find any experiences about self resolving cases other than most self resolve. Guest guest
I noticed something with my daughter at 7 weeks. Her tummy seemed to bulge out to one side. I have gotten 2 diagnoses - 1 progressive and 1 positional. I wish I knew who to believe. You are doing the right thing by researching. I would try to figure out in your area who specializes in infantile scoliosis and go see that person after your pediatrician checks her out.Sent from my iPadOn May 16, 2011, at 7:07 PM, "Beer4Clare" <shaunabingham@...> wrote: My baby is six weeks old and I have noticed for a while now that she always appears curved the same way all the time. Guest guest
We could tell on my son at around 3 weeks old. BUT none of us knew what it was. We just knew something was weird about his ribs and the way he seemed to curl up. He also had torticollis, but again we did not know it at the time.. His was indeed Progressive Idiopathic Infantile Scoliosis. And a geneticist felt it was from positioning in utero. Guest guest
My son had tortocollis early.... You would think the doc wouldve checked for scoliosis. I think you can roll a towel and place it by her head reinforcing the other direction. I did that .... PT said it was okay. My do. Guest guest
Sorry I wasn't done. Anyway.... I really think you should follow up on it. There is so much I wished I would have done when my baby was that little...... I k ow for a fact my son was trapped under a rib (head) which most likely caused the tortocollis. He was treated at about 6 months. He had a sacral dimple, low tone, and a large head and no one seemed to think to check for scoliosis:( please do not be alarmed just use caution....My so. Could have been treated MUCH earlier, and I regret that he wasn't. Your child could be completely healthy and I sincerely hope this is the case, but don't take the chance. Best wishes;) Tame Sent from my iPhone On May 16, 2011, at 7:07 PM, " Beer4Clare " <shaunabingham@...> wrote: My baby is six weeks old and I have noticed for a while now that she always appears curved the same way all the time. Guest guest
We started to notice 's scoliosis right away, at about two weeks. We noticed that when we laid him on his back his stomach would bulge a little more on his one side. That being said we didn't act on our suspicions until he was about 4 months. You can always take her to your doctor and see what they say. It might be torticollis, I am sure that is spelled wrong. My nephew had this and they found it pretty early and he just had to have physical therapy. Guest guest
Did torticollis cause a bulge also? I notice the bulge more than anything else. Also, when she is on her tummy, she tends to get wrinkles on one side of her back and not so much on the other side. This is just very frustrating to know if she has scoliosis, I will most likely get the waiting game from the doctor and not knowing what is to come is the worst. Since she was born, she is my life. I can't stand for something to be " wrong " with her. On Tue, May 17, 2011 at 4:45 AM, Leeper <bethanney05@...> wrote:  We started to notice 's scoliosis right away, at about two weeks. Guest guest
Do you have a copy of the films? If not, see if you can get them. Of course, as I refer to them as "films", you can tell I'm old school ... From back in the day when x-rays literally were films and it was like pulling teeth to get a hospital to release them to you! Now so much is save in digital form it should be relatively easy to at least get a printout of the x-ray to look at. Whenever my daughter has had chest x-rays (and she has had several) the curve has always been visible as well. Certainly if it is congenital scoli the curve would possible be present in that x-ray on the first day. My pregnancies were high risk and I had what seems like a zillion (at least 2 a week) of the high resolution sonos. My OB went back and looked through all of those to see if there was a curve present but there wasn't ... and there were definitely some great views of the spine. Who knows what "position" played in possibly hindering detection of an early curve in that case. Good luck! It could be really good information to see those pictures for comparison purposes if nothing else. You might be able to actually get a doctor to NOT wait and see if you can show with new x-rays that there has already been progression. Guest guest
If her head tilts to one side and she seems unable to easily turn her head to the other side she might very well have torticollis. Torticollis is often associated with infantile scoliosis, but having one does not necessarily mean that you have the other. My son had pretty bad torticollis. If your daughter has torticollis you will want to get her started with physical therapy soon (they will teach you some neck stretching exercises to do with her). My son had infantile scoliosis as well and his rib cage did protrude on one side. It's good that you are getting this looked into right away. Hopefully, it will not end up being scoliosis, but if it is, it is great that you are getting her checked out early. Guest guest
I noticed it early...maybe around 3 or 4 months.  Her head tilt was an issue early on as well.  No one would really listen until the head tilt got worse instead of better with therapy, ect.  They didn't actually diagnose her until after she was a year old.  I agree with getting it checked out and making sure with an orthopedic doctor. I think it's just getting more noticeable because she's getting bigger. Her left middle section protrudes and her head tilts to her right. I've googled infantile scoliosis and the symptoms seem to be what I'm seeing in my daughter. The pediatrician is going to look at her at her two month appointment. Thinking about her having this problem is worrying me a lot.Did anyone notice their baby having the symptoms before two months? Does anyone here have experience with scoliosis that actually self-corrected? I have not been able to find any experiences about self resolving cases other than most self resolve. -- Leah Jeffries
Guest guest
Hi, I rarely see self resolving cases, but they are out there. Ive seen littles that looked like they would never resolve, and they did. Its really unbelievable to see. Please read " Growth as corrective force in the early treatment of progressive infantile scoliosis, by Mehta and view A New Directio DVD, when you get a chance. These 2 items will help you to better understand the Early Treatment w/ EDF/Mehta casting treatment modality. Good indicators of scoli are uneven shoulders & pelvis, developing rib hump, flank creases in the back on the concavity side, and in many cases torticollis & sometimes plagiocephaly. A great way to help decifer if this is a self resolving or progressive case is to have the ped. ortho measure your babes RVAD. This measuring technique will help determine if its a progressive case, or ot. If the RVAD is above 20, then it may be progressive. If below, then it could be self resolving. There is an article on the RVAD in the files section of cast. Welcome to CAST and keep the questions coming! Sincerely, HRH > My baby is six weeks old and I have noticed for a while now that she > always appears curved the same way all the time. Guest guest
I think thats why we rarely see self resolving cases. Once their babes are straight there is no need to be here. Lucky little babes!
