Guest guest
As you all know, Abby started walking this week. But, I have a question for those of you whose kids started walking AFTER they were casted... Abby can walk anywhere she wants to - all over the house. BUT, if she tries to bent over to pick up a toy, she loses her balance and falls. She can not master the bending over while walking thing. And once she is down, she can not get back up unless she crawls over to a piece of furniture and pulls herself up. She will crawl to a chair or table and pull herself up and start walking again. Is this because of the weight of the cast? Have any of you experienced this? , mom of Abby (19 months) 48* down to 14* in 2nd cast
Guest guest
She will learn. It's probably a natural instinct to bend over but what she needs to do is bend her knees to squat and pick things up.... I think:) model that and see if it helps ! Guest guest
My so learned to get down on his knees to pick something up then he would scoot to a piece of furniture and pull up. He did this the whole time he was casted once he learned to walk in cast. I would say its pretty normal and just their modified way of adjusting to a new normal. My son is out of cast now but still did that for awhile after it was removed until he figured out he didn't need to any more. They figure out their own way of doing things. mom to Isaiah juliechafin2005 <juliechafin2005@...> wrote: >As you all know, Abby started walking this week. Guest guest
Hey -- Logan did the exact same thing when learningto walk in the cast. THe weight of the cast is the problem. For a little while Logan would crawl to the furnature to get up, but after a few weeks of that, the muscles in his legs like tripled and he was able to get to a standing position from the floor. Its all LEGS though. Usually when kids learn to stand they use their hands and arms as props. Logan found his center of balance quickly. There were tons of falls, but I let him figure it out. When he got frustrated, I laid on the floor beside him so he could copy me getting up.When picking toys off the floor he does the squat manuver. He would just tumble in the beginning on trying to reach things. Now its almost some modified pilates move that I can barely do! lol! But they figure it out. Its amazing. Hang in there! Guest guest
My daughter aubrey started walking in the cast. first she would walk on her knees and then she finally started walking on her feet. She just recently within her last two cast has started bending down to get things and actually laying on the floor and getting herself back up. For a long time if she got on the floor she couldnt get back up unless we helped her up. She goes for cast #6 tomorrow and honestly she is happier in cast than out of cast! Guest guest
That is exactly how it was for Noelle and she was walking before we casted. Initially she couldn't bend to pick something up unless she held onto something else and if she fell, she also had to crawl over to something to get herself up. I think it is the weight and cumbersome of the cast, but she did master both of those skills within weeks. - Noelle's mommy, 4 years oldRochester NYCasted 8 times for 1 1/2 years9 months in braceRegressed and went into cast 9Back in brace at 8 degrees supine, 13 standing! reflux, mild plagiocephaly, mild torticollos, hypotonia, ligament laxity, suspected Ehler's Danlos III From: juliechafin2005 <juliechafin2005@...>Subject: Walking Questioninfantile scoliosis treatment Date: Monday, March 14, 2011, 12:32 PM As you all know, Abby started walking this week.
