Guest guest
Wouldn’t the money be better spent helping the victims? De We need a Katrina Commission. Tell the media. The federal response to Hurricane Katrina is a national scandal that requires an independent investigation like the 9/11 Commission, but Republican leaders are trying to set up an investigation they control. Make sure the media hears the public outcry for an independent investigation by writing a letter to the editor calling for a Katrina Commission modeled after the 9/11 Commission. Dear MoveOn member, Ten days after Hurricane Katrina, the city of New Orleans is still mostly underwater and hundreds of thousands of people are homeless, yet NBC Nightly News reported last night that FEMA's portable housing remains hundreds of miles away unused. It is now obvious that the federal response to Hurricane Katrina is a national scandal that requires a proper investigation. But Republicans in Congress have proposed an investigation that would be run by them. Democrats are insisting on an independent commission with its own independent investigators and subpoena authority—modeled after the 9/11 Commission. So far the media isn't exposing that the Republican leadership is trying to cover over the Bush administration's failure to keep us safe. We need to make sure the media get on the case. One easy way to do that is on the Letters to the Editor page of newspapers. We've set up an online tool that makes submitting a letter easy. The Letters to the Editor page is often the most-read page in a newspaper. Your letter will be very timely. New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton is introducing legislation that would establish the independent Katrina Commission. According to Sen. Clinton's website: " The Katrina Commission would be charged with providing a comprehensive and unbiased evaluation of what could and should have been done to avoid the extraordinary damage, the loss of life, the evacuation problems and the inadequate relief efforts that have exacerbated the dislocation and suffering of thousands of Americans affected by Hurricane Katrina. Guest guest
Pat’s right, Danny, you did good. Didn’t’ mean to sound any different. Big kisses to you, buddy! De Re: Fwd: We need a Katrina Commission. Tell the media./Deb You did good Danny! RE: Fwd: We need a Katrina Commission. Tell the media./Deb Damn all I did was forward Debs' post and let others know where to do the same. I wasn't trying to start a witch hunt, that's going to happen anyway. I'm leaving my politics out of this, just looking at it as we're all one human family and I think Debs' voice should be heard. danny
Guest guest
What De said - the people sick & dying need the money more - did you see that on tv about the nursing home where more than 30 people DIED cause no one evacuated them! People in wheelchairs or walkers who couldn't swim drowned in their rooms. There were over sixty patients in the place that no one thought to evacuate - I hope their next of kin sues the responsible governments butts off! There are probably hundreds of similar stories, this one got publicity cause of the age & physical condition of the victims. SuZie. Guest guest
Hey SuZie... I think that is the one that was reported here too. The same article said that two police officers had shot themselves in the head. One of them had his mom in a nursing home... they said she called him every day asking if someone was coming to get them, he told her yes soon... She drowned. That hit me hard. Guest guest
I found it unbeleiveable that the staff would abandon them.I would have looked for help and evacuation if I had been a staff member. The phones were all knocked out so someone would have to litterally go for help. Guest guest
, Hey there Gal!! I just had to say that I couldn't agree with you more. I am able to watch quite a bit of tv, as you know I am taking care of Mom. And even though I turn on the television with intentions of watching some sort of movie, I always end up on CNN or CSNBC - and end up in tears and praying profusely. However - I feel that we as a Country don't seem to have our priorities straight. I went on to a web sight last night - Katrina.com, and there was several people from Spain that were putting Our Country down for getting so worked up about Katrina - when there are so many other 3rd world countries that have so much fammin and how 30,000 children die a day. They were all saying how rich of a country we are and that instead of bombing iraq - we should be helping other Countries.... ect.. ect... I couldn't continue to read without saying something. And I guess my whole point is that we are all so busy pointing the blame - all that energy and time, could be spent helping those in need. We are not only fighting with other Countries - now were fighting in our own. I have to wonder how many of us really believe in God and Jesus, the bible? How many people realize that all of these natural disasters were perdicted, even fighting amongst each other. Our first priority should be to help one another in need - there is no color! And I guess I will stop there before I say too much.... I pray for God to bless and be with us all... and especially all of those in need... Love, hugs, and prayers....
