Guest guest
Suzy as far as the hip thing goes I'm at a loss, Nora's hips have always been the same but the first cast removal was hell. They used the saw on it and she screamed til she puked. From then on we use tin snips and cut it off ourselves. When we started pulling on it the sound of the plaster breaking and ripping scared her to death and we explained what was going on, she was then under 3. She turns 5 this Thursday and she's gotten used to it coming off now, she only request that someone hold her hand during the process, otherwise we have no issues with removal any more. I'd try what Tame suggested for the dead skin, with the next cast try flossing him with a pair of hose or tights and the skin won't accumulate as bad. The baths may make his skin softer and more prone to breakdown in the next cast. Guest guest
For the dead skin, Aquaphor and Welluda Lotion are what I've always used for my son. You can't just put on a normal amount though, you gotta really load up on it and grease him up good. 4 days should be more than enough time to remove all the skin and redness or chafing and keeping him loaded up with lotion will really help him not feel so itchy. If Shanes hip bones are sticking out to the point that it concerns you, I would call the hospital and talk to someone about it. Is he thin or lost weight in the cast? (my son) his hip bones stick out a little bit, but it's never been as issue. If you think there's a problem though, they might want you to take him to your pediatrician. I take his cast off at home but in the beginning had it taken off at the hospital. It's easier for me to do it and we don't have to travel 6 hours round trip for a 5 minute thing. They aren't hurting him when they take it off, but they have to pull open the cast to get him out. And I know it's really scary, but the more calm you remain, the easier it will be for Shane. If he sees your fear or tears, he will get more shaken up. The noise is what really seems to scare the kids. Headphones, an mp3 player with ear buds are good distractors to drown out the noise. During cast trimming also. I've always just kept my face right next to and never break eye contact and sing silly songs, make up funny stories about that loud crazy "vacuum" those silly nurses are using, and I'll say "now are they hurting you or just bugging you?" I just keep his mind occupied and make him think about the fact that he's not hurt, he just doesn't like what they're doing. ( I always end up with a really sore back and knots in my shoulders from bending all that time! lol. But it's worth it.) Big hugs to you. It's really really hard going through the "firsts" of cast life. But you've made it a long way already and now know what to expect. Best wishes to Shane for much success!!Crystalmom to - 3 1/2, 10th cast- at zero in cast, 20 out of cast, started at almost 60and 8- no health issues From: suzy3333@... <suzy3333@...>Subject: Cast Removal and Questioninfantile scoliosis treatment Date: Tuesday, April 5, 2011, 7:35 AM Hello everyone, Shane had his first cast removal yesterday at Shriners Philadelphia. Guest guest
SUZY, DO THEY USE THE GREY CASTING T-SHIRT UNDER HIS CAST? IT IS REAL STRETCHY AND REALLY HELPS PROTECT SIERRA’S SKIN. IT IS ANTI-MOISTURE & ANTI BACTERIAL. SIERRA IS ON HER 6TH CAST AND WHEN THE CAST TECH. CUTS IT OFF HE JUST ZIPS DOWN THE FRONT ACROSS THE CHEST PART & THEN THE BELOW HER BELLY BUTTON & IT COMES RIGHT OFF. HER SKIN HAS ALWAYS LOOKED GREAT. OF COURSE SHE NEEDS A BATH & SHE HAS A FEW ROUGH PRESSURE POINTS ON HER LEFT SIDE & HIPS BUT BY THE TIME I GIVE HER A BATH HER SKIN LOOKS NORMAL. WE WERE IN THIS PAST CAST FOR 12 WEEKS. SIERRA DOES HATE THAT SAW BUT IT ONLY TAKES A FEW MINUTES. I MAKE SURE IT IS THE SAME TWO CAST GUYS THAT CUT HERS OFF & TRIMS HERS OUT AFTER THE CASTING. WE BRING IN AN OLD ONE THAT WAS SO AWESOME SO THEY CAN USE AS A SAMPLE. SIERRA IS SHORT WASTED SO IT HAS TO BE JUST RIGHT. HER HIPS DID HAVE ROUGHER PLACES THIS LAST TIME BUT I SHOWED IT TO DR. K BEFORE HE CASTED HER & HE SAID HE WOULD ADD MORE PADDING ON HIPS. THEY CUT SIERRA’S OFF ONE DAY & WE HAVE THE NEXT CAST PUT ON THE NEXT MORNING AT 6:00 A.M. SHE HAS NEVER COMPLAINED ABOUT ANYTHING HURTING! I BATHE HER IN THAT AVEENO BATH SOAK..IT IS IN A POWDER FORM, WASH HER WITH AVEENO SOOTHING RELIEF CREAMY WASH, USE THE AVEENO LOTION & THE AQUAPHOR HEALING OINTMENT. I USUALLY GIVE HER 2-3 BATHS MAINLY TO PLAY. BY THE NEXT MORNING U CAN NOT EVEN TELL SHE HAD A CAST ON. DR. K COMPLAINS THAT I GREASE HER DOWN, BUT HE UNDERSTANDS & THEY JUST PUT THE CASTING T-SHIRT ON BEFORE CASTING. I BELIEVE THAT T-SHIRT MAKES A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE. OH, IS YOUR SON’S CAST OVER THE SHOULDER? SIERRA’S IS NOT! LET ME KNOW IF I CAN HELP U IN ANY WAY. WE HAVE BEEN CASTING SINCE APRIL 2010. THANKS! Guest guest
Hi Suzy, Im not sure about cast removal. It may have been the horrific noise of the ocillating cast saw. Liv was also horrified by this saw when she was 3. May be you could have the doc show him that the saw isnt the kind that would cut him. Have the doc explain to Shane that the saw just vibrates fast and even put your finger on it, so he can see that it will not cause him harm. Other parents have had great success in calming their kiddos during cast removal w/ portable DVD players/and/ or music in an Ipod. In regards to the skin, the pioneer recommends Calendula cream. Its a natural cream made from marigolds and it really worked well for Liv ad many others during cast off time. Test a small patch of skin prior to covering his entire back w/ it just to be sure there is no allergic reaction....It costs around $4 or $5 and can be found at most health food stores. Do you think his lil hip bones look more pronounced in front? Please take pics of his hips. This will give you a baseline of what they look like now and if there is a change post next cast. Hope this helps a bit. Sorry, he was traumatized by that darn saw!!! I hate the saw too! HRH > Hello everyone, > > Shane had his first cast removal yesterday at Shriners Philadelphia. Guest guest
We had the same problem w/ dead skin and saw trauma for a while. We decided to take Jonas' cast off at home this time to avoid a copay and the saw. It worked very well!! No crying and only took about 15 minutes tops! We just used tin snips from the hardware store. There is a video on here of another family doing it. I believe I just searched " Cast off " in the messages. Hollie mama of Jonas in 6th cast 25.7 degrees down from 73. Guest guest
Suzy, The person who cuts off Audrey's cast goes straight down the back with the " saw " and then pulls the cast off the arms. Audrey does freak out but it's over so fast. We always give her a few aveeno baths for the dead skin and itching and then use a lot of lotion/aquaphor. I would not exfoliate anything as the skin is so raw when the cast comes off. Just continue gently washing. mom to Audrey 5th cast. Guest guest
Suzy, We've tried to have them cut the cast off various ways, but no success to ever do it without a complete freak out and melt-down from Grace. Although, I know the second they turn the saw off, she stops and acts as if nothing ever happend. And get this...when we left the procedure room this last time, she was only in a pull-up, she looked up at me, with tear stained face and said "Momma, that wasn't so bad!" But she behaved the worst she ever has, lol. So I try to keep in mind that she comes out the other side unscathed Jane From: audreymdawson <audreymdawson@...>infantile scoliosis treatment Sent: Wed, April 6, 2011 12:09:13 PMSubject: Re: Cast Removal and Question Suzy, The person who cuts off Audrey's cast goes straight down the back with the "saw" and then pulls the cast off the arms. Guest guest
Jane, Grace's response reminds me of my This last time we went in, before things even started, looked at me and said "I'm a big girl now, Mommy. Guest guest
Prior to Grace's casting dates, we do the countdown. It seems to help her deal better with the day. When I talk to her about it, she'll go through a routine of things she remembers about the day (she motions about most of it, as she doesn't know what certain things are called). Like she'll point to her hand and said "I have this?" meaning the IV, then she'll make a buzzing sound and run her finger down her cast indicating the removal of her old cast. She'll also point to her nose indicating the oxygen, which I am not sure how she remembers that as she always has it off by the time she wakes up. But it seems to be her way of coping by assuring herself of what is going to happen. Guest guest
Suzy, I have video's of both at home cast removal and 'flossing'. These are both choices we made as a family in conjunction with Makenna's doctors. The at home removal became a celebrated ritual in our house, a memory both Makenna and her sister will hold fondly I'm sure. Makenna loved the flossing and I think it contributed significantly on keeping her skin 'exfoliated'. I do know some kids don't care for the flossing and some casts aren't made to be flossed - so check with your doctor about padding, etc. I can only say that these options worked for us. If you would like video links, feel free to email me privately. Amy > > Hello everyone, > > Shane had his first cast removal yesterday at Shriners Philadelphia. Guest guest
Removing the t-shirt once a week and washing it is a lifesaver for us. There is really no dead skin at all that way- do you have the under cast t-shirt? There is a video on YouTube of how to do it and I can email you instructions. Or flossing would probably have a similar effect, but my guess is you may have to do it more often. Hope this helps.
