Guest guest
forgot to mention, Kieran will be travelling with his dad, , and I will stay home with the girls. We take turns. He will probably do a few trips in a row now until our baby is a bit older, and then it will be my turn for a few of our many, many casts that I am looking forward to for our beautiful son. We took photos and I will post some later. He loved going to the pool. Kieran has not had a full bath or swum since he was first cast a year ago. Kieran has had full showers at cast changes and sponge baths/hair washes in the kitchen sink only, and a few times he has soaked his bottom for a few minutes in an inch of water and Epsom salt, below the bottom of his cast while I watched him like a hawk and got on his case if he moved too much. This has kept him more or less clean, but I really wanted him to be able to swim with his sisters and for us to swim as a family as swimming has always had a high importance to us as an activity. > > So Kieran went swimming today in his new drysuit and loved it. I am glad that he is back in the water. Kieran is 2 and a half years old, we have spoken with Kieran's care providers about this before we undertook it and got the go ahead also. The suit performed perfectly and his cast remained completely dry. He starts parent and tot swim lessons on Tuesday and we hope to get into the water several times a week. For my family, which places high value on swimming, this is one of the best things we have done for ourselves since we started casting Kieran, which ranks above and beyond anything else we have ever done for him. Now there is NOTHING Kieran can't do in a cast. He has swum, done gymnastics, dance, skating, played team ball sports (but not t-ball or tennis or anything like that, more like tot soccer), rode on his trike, climbed all over the playground, even places his almost five year old sister won't, does chin ups, tot push ups runs, hikes (he loves hiking and is very good at it), stretches to the sky and downward dog, etc, etc, etc. He is very, very active and nothing seems to stop him, period (just as long as he doesn't ask to play t-ball or tennis.) Continue to look for ways to challenge him and improve his quality of life, and look forward to hopefully getting him so straight that he may grow up to be surgery free -- though, as a disclaimer, this isn't really what is expected. He is at this point quite inflexible, but until he actually has surgery, I continue to hope. > > Also, , if you read this, I will send you photos of Kieran asap, as soon as it is quiet with the three small children quiet and asleep. > > Sorry I don't update more! Guest guest
Hi , Make sure you get doctor approval before trying anything new, including this. We got it as White's Diving, here on Vancouver Island, In Centeral Saanich (; Capital Regional District). We're also recreational divers, so we are familiar with dive equipment and its use, which also weighed into our decision. They ship and you can fax in the measurements. They have made other drysuits for other kids that wear EDF casts around age 2+ and the same drysuits for other medical conditions in toddlers+ (and probably younger) that require keeping dry. They are very good and very helpful. 250 652-8554. Do talk to the doctor before undertaking anything like this, but it works for us and our specific circumstances. It just gets him the pool, it's not for therapeutic reasons. Hope this helps and look forward to hearing how Thad's upcoming appointment goes and what his cast date will be! I'll send you a note later to catch up, we're just sitting down to dinner Shauna Leamy Kelsey, Kieran and 's mom > > > > > > Hello, > > > > > > Kieran will be at the Salt Lake City Shriners April 17-19 for his sixth cast. Guest guest
Thanks Crystal! We've had quite a bit of leakage on the front of Kieran's cast this time around, but nothing that has made it structurally unsound. It is holding, though it did smell for a while. I do duct tape the high abrasion areas and the areas most likely to get wet, though so the cast can breathe. I slept light and listened really hard for Kieran in the night. If a small child wakes at night put them on the potty when they are learning, and I would recommend right up until they are comfortable going on their own to the toilet at night. They are most likely to pee the bed if they wake or if they almost come out of sleep. You don't have to turn on the light in the bathroom or anything to keep from waking them too much. If they wake several times a night, then take them several times a night. When they wake in the morning, very first thing before anything, to start as close to as soon as they wake, before their feet even touch the floor, or before they make it to their door, or your door, or wherever you can catch them put them right on the potty, as fast as you can as most kids sleep and wake dry and actually either wake entirely or almost wake long enough to pee. Toddlers and even babies generally do not pee themselves while stone cold asleep. Babies will at least move their head quite a bit indicating that they are actually awake for a few minutes. (I did diaper free for a while with Kieran when he was a baby and used a potty. We had a lot more time then.) If your toddler lies in bed after waking, recognize when they wake and get them out of bed and onto the potty or toilet. What worked best for us, but I have never heard for how many others was to skip the potty altogether and use a toilet seat and stool and wait until they are old enough to touch the stool with their feet and get their knees bent while on the kid sized toilet seat that fits over the regular toilet seat so that their feet can touch the stool. They do not have to be flat footed, but some kids need to touch the stool more so than others. I think many kids could care less if their legs touched the stool or even had a stool, I have met many, but both my potty trained kids needed the stool and I remember needing it myself when a child. I carry around a child sized toilet seat, full sized, plush one, the same one we have in the house except for the car and a collapsible stool I bought for $10 in a diaper bag I have repurposed for this. When Kieran first started potty training in this cast, right after he got it, it touched the kid toilet seat at the back and he couldn't sit right down and he found it tough. As he grew these last few weeks he was able to sit easier and easier. Now he can use the public toilet seats without the kid toilet seat or even a stool. He needed the kid seat out in public with the stool for about a month, but as got further from the 2.5 year age he was big enough to be able to handle sitting on toilet seats easier. He holds the side of the seat when he sits on it in public. I have not yet trained him to pee standing up, but I think most parents of young boys would have by now, and I think he could handle it in the cast no problem. It's just working so well for us that I have not wanted to complicate it at all. My daughter is almost five and does not have scoliosis or any other health issues and potty trained on the same schedule my son in a cast has. We moved when she was almost four and she was put back in toilet training. She started wetting her bed and messing her pants several times a day. It took months for her to be solid again with potty training. It was hard for her as she was used to using the toilet no problem. Our new house is much bigger, as our family had grown considerably since we moved into the place we lived at before with just our daughter and we where soon to have three and she found it tough that there was essentially more than one room and a toilet aside from the bedrooms. It was possible to be out of sight of me for the first time in a home, and I did put up gates to try to reduce this, but it lead to her not feeling comfortable, that and the new environment, going to the bathroom and she lost the habit for several months, though not completely. We had many battles over whether she was going to use the toilet or not. In the end, of course, as most do, she practiced until she was back on track. We've never had a problem with night time poop, and the worst troubles we have had where when he was in a diaper -- with the front and back folded down. We had so many accidents while he wore diapers or pull ups as he was one to go excessively all at once, potty training was a bit of a must. My daughters took things in far politer loads you could say. Kieran, with all the babies and toddlers I have known, was positively legendary both in how much he could pack down (and in a cast no less -- it probably speeds up the digestive system though) and how much he could pack out in a hurry, both number one and two and I have never heard another cast parent remark on this particular habit, so I think Kieran may be a little unique in this. Hope some of this helps, sorry for the novel! Shauna Leamy Kelsey, Kieran, and 's mom. > > > > > > Hello, > > > > > > Kieran will be at the Salt Lake City Shriners April 17-19 for his sixth cast. For my family, which places high value on swimming, this is one of the best things we have done for ourselves since we started casting Kieran, which ranks above and beyond anything else we have ever done for him. Now there is NOTHING Kieran can't do in a cast. Guest guest
Love to hear what you decide! We got Kieran's at White's Diving here in the west coast of Canada. They ship, and I am sure they ship internationally. They make drysuits quite frequently I am told for toddlers and small children with medical reasons to keep dry. I am not the first by far that they have made for an Mehta EDF cast. Good luck! Shauna > > Shauna, > > Thanks so much for sharing this info. Guest guest
yes, very different. It would be an expensive mistake to order a wetsuit instead of a drysuit, as a wetsuit keeps you wet and a drysuit keeps you dry.
