Guest guest
Wll, Im ight be in your book sooner than later. Just went to the cardiologist for a ollow up after a few years and again they want to put me on statins. I would say absolutely not, except now it is accompanied by high blood pressure, which to me is definitely something to worry about. My question is can I treat the HBP without treating the high cholesterol? Not happy about the combination at all. Guest guest
Yes you can easily treat the high blood pressure with altace or something like that! DO NOT take the statins! I had high blood pressure years before I had high cholesterol, and have had it under control and in the normal range for years. Guest guest
, I'm being treated for high blood pressure w/a combination of quinapril and alprazalam, which is working quite well. I refuse to take statins, so my doctor prescribed cholestyramine, which works differently than statins. But my stomach couldn't tolerate it. So I'm taking nothing at all for cholesterol. However, I've read that high cholesterol is not a risk factor for females over 70, so I'm totally unconcerned about it. I'm absolutely convinced that statins (and maybe even lowering cholesterol at all, especially at my age) would be worse than doing nothing at all about it. The supposed benefits of lower cholesterol have been greatly exaggerated by the pharmaceutical industry just to sell their products, and there are increasingly a number of experts who consider it a scam. see www.spacedoc.net. Another is www.westonprice.org/moderndiseases/statin.html. I'm convinced the risks far outweigh the very minimal (if any) benefits of those drugs. From: Manzari <dpmanzari@...>Lipitor Sent: Tue, December 7, 2010 3:13:28 PMSubject: Re: statin side effects Wll, Im ight be in your book sooner than later. Guest guest
Thanks , Dr. , I had a calcium score 5 years ago that resulted in a zero score, yeah! Although I know it does not reveal any soft plaque on the test. Also 2 years ago had an echocardiogram that the doc said was good news for a change. However, he insisted I take a minimum of 20 mg of Crestor due to my high cholesterol # of 280 or so. Imagine that? 20, not 5 or 10 to see how I react but 20 mg! My HDLs are 70-80 but they say that would never be high enough to protect me from my high LDL #. That eventually it would get me. Well, I guess eventually something will get all of us. I also had the VAP test which indicated I believe, that I have the "large, bouyant" LDL particles, which is better than the small, dense ones. Fast forward to today. I just went to another cardiologist for an update, who again confirmed my high BP and did what I thought was a comprehensive prelimunary exam. It seems my BP has been creeping up a bit at a time and now it's at 160/80-90. Yipes!! So, I have changed my diet, have lost 3 lbs so far, but I really want to lose 20 lbs. However, when he looked a the echo he said it indicated a possible enlarged aorta! What??!! Why didn't the first cardiologist tell me that 2 years ago!!!!????? The one thing the new doc said was that if the echo wasn't done exactly and the instrument was on an angle, it would make the round diameter of the aorta appear like an oval giving it a larger reading and appearance. So, I'm having blood work done and another echo in six weeks. He also wnats to put me on a generic statin, saying lovastatin or zimfastatin, 20 mg and BP meds. In the mean time I'm walking around not knowing if I really have an enlarged aorta, a little scared to exercise, which is what I probably need, but I'm concerned about the aortic thing. I feel like I'm a ticking time bomb. Are my high cholesterol and high BP independent conditions or related? Thanks. p.s. I also asked the doc what about the many people that can't tolerate statins. Does that mean they're doomed? Well, we have other ways to lower their cholesterol. Sigh. Guest guest
Hi : how old are you, do you have a family history of premature heart disease, what do you weigh, what is your diet like, what are your triglyceride and LDL numbers, and do you smoke? These are some of the answers I need to better answer your questions. In any event, based on your echo you should not be concerned about exercise. Guest guest
Hi- I do some yoga but not the water aerobics. I still work in a restaurant 2 days a week and pretty much do some sporadic high paced walking during the rush hours. I would like to think that is doing a little something. I still probably need to ramp up the exercise a bit and will try to do that. From: Jack <moore3@...>Subject: Re: statin side effectsdpmanzari@...Date: Thursday, December 9, 2010, 6:03 AM -- How about exercise? That’s got to be good for HPB, raising HDL, and general sense of well-being. Water aerobics is a great way to get started, if you aren’t in good shape. Walking works wonders too, though not in the cold north. I had my heart attack while in the middle of exercising. Had no symptoms ahead of time, so I too have some fear about exercise. I try to get an hour a day, in a mix of yoga, swimming and walking. Yoga is absolutely great. I use a “senior pass (!)†instead of doing the hard stuff. There is a big emphasis on controlled breathing, which helps in not overexerting. More on this if you would like. Jack PS: I couldn’t figure out how to hit “Reply All,†so here you go.
