Blood Donation Question

I have a question, maybe some of the nurses on this site can help

me...My family and I want to start donating blood regularly. I

understand I need to make arrangements to donate Plasma. Is that

what I want to donate for IVIG production or do I donate whole blood

for IVIG. I may be able to donate both, but I believe the IVIG

comes from plasma. I am not sure if that is a separate donation, or

do they separate it from a whole blood donation???

I recently had a new friend ask me, " OH, I guess you must donate

blood regularly due to your sons condition and treatment needed. I

felt pretty awful saying, no - actually I don't. So now I'm going

to...

Thanks!

don't worry about feeling guilty. Actually plasma is the source of IVIG and

from what I've been told donating whole blood actually produces very little

IgG. So the plasma centers are the ones that provide much of the product

needed to produce the different brands. To me though considering how many

of these patients have to have surgery and how sometimes you need blood

given during surgery it can't hurt to encourage people to donate blood.

It's just better touted as needed for their " disease " than for their

" treatment " .

Hi Kim,

I saw your post on blood donations. What you need to do is find out if there is

a apheresis center near you, they are the centers that take out the plasma

versus whole blood. With plasma donation you can donate several times a week ( I

believe) instead of once in 3 months. It takes longer to donate than a regular

donation, but they only take the plasma. I am in the process of writing a letter

about , an update really, since her new diagnosis, and asking friends

and family to think about donating either way, whole blood or plasma. It can

only help if they can do it, I feel one person can make a difference, it is a

start anyway. We are in the process of finding an apheresis center here, upstate

NY to start donating as well. I hope is healthy now. Don't worry about not

donating yourself, we Mom's have so much to do and on our minds trying to keep

our kids healthy and happy, we don't always have time for anything else. We just

do the best we can.

Take care.

,

Thanks for the info. I will be calling the local red cross Monday to see what

is available in my area. I do believe one person can make a difference and I

hope to rally some of my friends and family to do the same. It is very easy to

put things off because we are so busy...but when I stop and think how important

IVIG is to these kids, (life or death to many of them) it's worth the effort to

keep our kids and others healthy!

Hope your daughter is doing well and thanks again.
