Studies are biased by: Profit motive. Agendas. Financing. Study objectives. Study construction. Etc. Not all studies are created equal and studies can be constructed to reach desired outcomes and hide undesired outcomes. Even independant studies conducted by educational establishments are skewed by grant sources and future employment opportunities of the researches or past employers, peer pressure to toe the line to the current medical mantras, etc. Fundamentally I find compelling reasons to seek out better constructed studies and weight them more heavily and to take poorly constructed studies or studies with larger potential for bias and to weight them less heavily. While I don't remember phine's message (and you didn't include even a portion of it you were replying to) she is certainly rational to make reasoned judgments about the merits of any study as she so chooses. We both might disagree, but lets us disagree on the merits. Personally, drug company studies ALL come with " strings " attached and one should be careful. As to the merits of lowering cholesterol, that is another big question all by itself. Starting from a total cholesterol of 300 and moving towards lower, all cause mortality increases regardless of what the drug companies have to say about cardiovascular events in particular. As you lower your cholesterol, your chances of dying increases and this mortality profile dramatically increases deaths from all causes as it drops down past 180. One may be marginally less likely to die from a cardiovascular event, but one will be more likely to die from other causes CAUSED by the lowering of cholesterol. As to Zetia, I took it on two separate occasions. It lowered my total cholesterol about 20 points of which 50% was HDL, the " good " cholesterol. The result was that my HDL ratio got worse. -- Steve - dudescholar4@...
