The " statin " referred to is Mevinolin or Lovastatin or Mevacor, a prescription

drug. While red yeast rice is a natural source, it has the same side effect

profile as it's prescription twin. All warnings that apply to Mevacor also

apply to red yeast rice. The only real difference is that it is very easy to

get a non-standardized variant of red yeast rice and get inconsistent results

or no results at all. Red yeast rice contains other things which may or may

not improve the side effect profile. Get blood work before and after

starting any cholesterol lowering regiment, a CMP/CBC/Cholesterol test and

possibly a VAP test as well.

It is ill advised to take grapefruit in any form when taking a statin drug, or

any other drug that uses the P450 system of the liver to break it down and

eliminate it. Grapefruit slows down the liver and cause drug concentrations

to rise in the blood stream. Be careful.

I was refering to taking the grapefruit instead of the statin drug. Red yeast rice does not cause liver damage or muscle damage

Thanks Tony.

I have high cholesterol, but fortunately my doctor understands that it is not how high one's cholesterol is that really matters, but it is the ratio of the HDL and the LDL that is important. [i have the following on a Word document; if anyone would like a copy to give to their health practitioner, email me at surpriseshan2@... ]

Understanding Cholesterol!

Let's clear up the confusion over cholesterol! Cholesterol is so important that it is produced in your body in 2 specific ways. Doctors have determined that having the proper ratio between HDL and LDL is a more important predictor of health than the level of total cholesterol. Now we know that low fat, low cholesterol diets result in lower overall cholesterol but low fat diets also cause the good HDL cholesterol to drop too low, and when HDL is too low the risk of disease increases. There is a significant and growing amount of research that shows that cholesterol does not cause heart disease and the dietary consumption of foods containing cholesterol has only a minor effect in determining total cholesterol levels. When you begin eating in a way that avoids the production of excess insulin and puts glucagon in the metabolic driver's seat, your blood cholesterol level will fall effortlessly and you will realize that in the bigger picture, dietary cholesterol consumption is essentially a non-issue.

http://www.totalhealthdynamics.com/cholesterol.htm

But I have 3 friends whose doctors don't know this nor believe it, and whom have high cholesterol. I will give this info to them. Thanks again.

Have you tried this?

Statins: The truth!

Posted by: "Tony Coranis" garliccure@...   garliccure

Mon Nov 6, 2006 7:16 pm (PST) The statin drugs were developed due to a natural occuring product called red yeast rice (which has no side effects) that inhibits a certain enzyme. The statin drugs:

1) Will lower cholesterol!

A) however, the heart disease rate remains unchanged.

2) Are very expensive

3) Have severe side effects.

If anyone would like to try the following (takes 6 weeks)

Every morning peel a grapefruit (preferably organic) and cut it up into a blender and blend and drink it.

There is a natural fiber in grapefruit that workd much better than the statins.

This sounds like 'a plan' or treatment protocol??? Call you tell

me please why those particular foods? And what if somebody is gluten-

intolerant or celiac? Will another whole grain do or something like

quinoa or amarath?

Do the beans need to be in a soup and if so, what else also

needs to be part of it - or not part of it?

Also do the beans need to be injested only in soup form or

would something like fried or mexican beens or been cassarole be just

as effective?

Hi Tony & Group,

If you can find breads made with sprouted grains or spelt flour, they

are also a good (complex carb) choice.

Red yeast rice CAN and DOES cause liver damage and/or muscle damage.

RYR may be natural but it is still a statin, pure and simple.

As to the medical literature regarding grapefruit, I would recommend you do a

check at PubMed for published medical abstracts at

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=PubMed

Try out a search for the

keywords " grapefruit liver " or " grapefruit liver p450 " .

Or you can try the popular press:

> Red yeast rice does not cause liver damage or muscle damage

I wouldn't want anyone taking this kind of medical advice and ending up with

the same side affects as other statins on this incorrect assertion.

Again, as a reminder of previous information, red yeast rice contains

Lovastatin, a statin known to cause the standard statin side effects.

Personally, I tried red yeast rice under the care of an physician for several

months AND my liver enzynes were higher on it than when I take Pravastatin.

In fact, on the red yeast rice my uric acids lives went way above normal

indicating something nasty was happening from the red yeast rice. Not only

do the medical studies confirm that red yeast rice has the same side effects

as lovastatin since it contains the same IDENTICAL drug, but my personal

blood work adds to the evidence as well. My last blood work on Pravastatin

was completely normal., a better result than red yeast rice.

Below is dangerous advice. As has been noted on this forum before, stopping a

statin cold turkey can result in rebound platelet stickiness which can cause

blood clots leading to heart attacks and/or stroke. Go off and statin drugs

slowly and deal with a compentent physician. Asprin, and fish oil are two

choice that can help manage this problem.

When I said Whole wheat, I mean whole grains also. As for the beans, YES, they can be refried or in a casserole etc. The fiber in grapefruit can also be bought in a product called ProFibe (my father uses it and it workd great). They say to work up to 3 scoops a day, however, my father takes one scoop a day with great results (you have to start at 1/2 scoop and work up, it gives you the runs). Also, another way is to buy some apples (ORGANIC) and either eat 2-3 a day (with the peel) or in a blender. The apple peel is loaded with pectin also.Shan <surpriseshan2@...> wrote: Tony This sounds like 'a plan' or treatment protocol??? Call you tell me please why those particular foods? Thanks Tony for clarifying that for me.

Since the apples are organic, am I correct in assuming that all

the food should be organic???

Why is the pectin important? Is it pectin that is important of

those particular foods, apples and grapefruits?

You seem to be advocating a high fiber diet here; or is my

perception incorrect? Is that the why of the whole grains?

Why does the ProFibe give people the runs?

Yes; I ask a lot of questions. That is how I learn.

Stopping Statins May Cause Rebound That Triples Risk Of Death

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2002/03/020306074451.htm

Or click here for a google search for keywords " stopping statin heart attack

platelet " :

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en & sa=X & oi=spell & resnum=0 & ct=result & cd=1 & q=stopp\

ing+statin+heart+attack+platelet & spell=1

The evidence supports what I said before. In any case Tony, my few comments

on these few issues is not personal. I merely wish to make sure people are

informed of the KNOWN consequences of some of the recommendations. The

argument " As for getting off statins cold turkey, many people have done it "

is illogical and applies to 100s and 1000s of similar statements such as " as

for refusing to look both ways before crossing the street, many people have

done it " . While the statement may be true, it is nevertheless true that

crossing the street without looking kills some people and stopping statins

cold turkey is not a positive experience for some people. On the other hand,

the people who DO die don't leave testimonials about how stopping statins

cold turkey was the best thing they ever did.

In any case, statins are significant drugs and one should use wisdom in using

them and/or getting off of them as part of the process of improving nutrition

and health. Even natural alternatives can be quite powerful, merely lacking

patent protection doesn't make something safe and effective for whatever ails

you.

I personally use a combination of alternatives (not limited to " natural " ) and

prescription medication to manage cholesterol and other health issues. If

the day comes when I can eliminate the prescription completely, I'll take

that step wisely, but until then, I do what is effective and most importantly

what is in my own best interest. One of my reasons for electing alternative

solutions where ever possible is I don't have to depend on a doctor somewhere

to agree with me, but can take my course of action as I see fit. With drugs

available internationally without a prescriptions, sometimes I elect those

choices.

Cheers.

You should try and eat as much organic as possible. Pectin is in the apple peels and in the grapefruit. High soluble fiber (pectins, fiber in beans) combines with bile acids in the gut, preventing their absorption which helps the liver produce cholesterol. High insoluble fiber in the diet helps prevent glucose spikes. As for pro fibe giving the runs, your body has to adjust to theincresed fiber.Shan <surpriseshan2@...> wrote: Thanks Tony for clarifying that for me. Of course steve makes some good points. I am not denying that. However, be very careful with statins. If you are on them, you should get off of them. Ask your Dr. for a lower dose and wean yourself off them if quitting cold turkey scares you. Some things to consider: Statins have a high incidence of side effects. My uncle was on 80 mg Lipitor a day (highest dose) and after a year, his leg muscles started wasting away. He was switched to crestor (which is also bad). I have an aunt who takes 5mg a day of lipitor (10mg tablet split in half) and gets great results. Why a 16 fold difference between these 2 people, I do not know. My issues with statins is that they are pushed by the drug companies, are expensive, have serious side effects and od not lower the heart disease rate. If you want to stay on them, take some Coenzyme

Q10.

One study, published in the August 2003 American Journal of Cardiology found that lowering bad cholesterol with statin drugs may not reduce the rate at which plaque builds up in the arteries surrounding the heart. This finding flies in the face of the widespread belief that lowering LDL cholesterol levels is the best way to reduce arterial plaque. In the study, participants taking varying doses of a statin did generally lower their cholesterol. However, all the groups had an average increase in arterial plaque of 9.2 percent. Another study published in the December 2002 Journal of the American Medical Association looked at the effect of statin drugs versus usual care

(improving diet, exercise, etc.). While the statin group did lower their bad cholesterol levels significantly more than the usual care group, both groups had the SAME rates of death and heart disease. In light of these reports, and the known dangers of statin drugs, you would expect some major news in the area of statins, but the studies received hardly any mainstream media coverage. As with many health care issues, you’ll have to sort out the truth for yourself.

Everyone is raving about the all-new beta.

Thanks for explaing all that Tony.

Actually, given that you all were harmed by chemicals; I was most

or less assuming that you all ate organic if you could possibly

afford it. I am also assuming that you all want to get better, and it

seems rather illogical to hope to do that while you are consuming

more chemicals.
